Broken circle. Very appropriate. Things come full circle but doesn't fix up everything, hence Broken Circle. Nice. This is the first 10 I've given to a DZ episode since beginning my reviews in Season 3, so nice is expected.
We start off with new intro music. I hate it, lol. But I'm not a fan of new anything, anyway. I don't think I was a fan of the first tune they used also but it grew on me to the point where I got excited waiting to hear it and I would even hum it in my car! So, this one might grow on me, too, and upon reading the review before mine, it probably will.
I was going to give this episode an 8 or 9. But the fact that there was actual closure of so many different elements propped it to a 10. You'd think after all these shows, TDZ would stop surprising me, but I actually didn't think they would be able to have that one thing in them, to actually wrap something up for once! But they did. This should have been the season finale, it had the feel of it and the wrapping up of it. And to think that it was supposed to be the finale makes me wonder why they didn't decide to use it as that, because me and many close ones who I have shared this awesome show with were getting a bit irked, wondering when this show would get somewhere. But timing aside, I enjoyed every second of this. Every major issue of this show was mentioned, every storyline continued, and continued well.
And they put it all together with other elements that make up a great show, as well: There was the car chase (taxi cab scene), the authority figure (Walt)wrestling with the higher power authority figure (FBI), the authority figure acting reckless (Walt punching Sonny), and some strong religious scenes. And when they started throwing the words "There's still time" around (If you watch closely present Johnny says it to Walt once and future Johnny says it to present Johnny) then I know we're back in business. Hearing that was like seeing a familiar member of my DZ family! It's the DZ trademark line that the writers like to use. It's like Quantum Leap's "Oh boy," but used more subtly. Awesome awesome awesome.
Speaking of Quantum, as if the two shows aren't being compared enough, I think this episode is the first time that Johnny, in his vision, went "through" something he was viewing when he was seeing Rebecca. A bit too much like what Al used to do. I'd rather him illogically dodge the stuff like he's been doing until now.
One more thing I liked was when future Johnny walked up to present Johnny's car and present J looked up at him like "Is there a problem officer?" Great facial expression.
One thing I wasn't so fond of was how Rebecca and everyone else got over the fact that Johnny just, oopsiedaisy, got Rachel's killer wrong. He was so sure of himself when he thought it was Greg, so much so that Rebecca was going to kill him. Pretty big blunder to just let go by. Very cool to see that Greg isn't 100% evil. Antagonists are always better when they have some good to them and many things in this episode made Greg that much more human.
All in all a great episode to start season 4 with. I would have rather it ended season 3 but at least the episode happened. And, hey, I'm not in any rush. There's still time...
