When Provenza and Taylor are arguing in the hall by Ballistics about whose slug gets analyzed first, an uncredited Phillip P. Keene can be seen lurking in the background, hand on his hip to reveal a badge on his belt. He's seen in the background again later, but has no lines. Among the changes between this pilot and the regular series is that he would be added to the cast and play Buzz Watson.
Parker Center, where Brenda's Priority Murder Squad is based, is the Parker Center former real-life headquarters for the Los Angeles Police Department, located on Los Angeles Street. Originally called the Police Administration Building, it was renamed for former Chief of Police William H. Parker, who died of a heart attack while still in office in 1966. Completed in 1955, the building is considered outdated for a major urban police force, and construction recently began on a newer, more modern facility.
The Parker Center was demolished in 2019.

At her first crime scene Brenda looks at the victim and says, "It looks like love." She repeats the line in the final episode in a far less grisly context. Another bookend moment is when this episode, as well as the last, ends with with Brenda enjoying a Ding-Dong.
Though entirely convincing in her portrayal of Brenda Leigh Johnson, Kyra Sedgwick does not have a southern accent in real life. In fact, she spends most of her time in New York, with her husband, actor Kevin Bacon, and their two children.
The first airing of the pilot was commercial-free.
