Almost flawless
paquitap3 April 2022
This is easily one of the strongest episodes of the entire series. There might be some logic flaws in a couple of scenes but the overall story, directing and acting are all top notch.

Prue's Dead
simplyy_charmedd18 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this episode a lot of times because I didn't get how Prue died. This is what happened. Prue, Piper, and Phoebe try and save their innocent,A Doctor, because Shax wants to kill him. Phoebe goes upstairs to look in The Book Of Shadows while Prue and Piper are protecting their innocent. Shax appears while Phoebe is still upstairs, so Shax throw an energy ball at the doctor but Prue pushes him out of the way and Prue get hit in the chest with it and smashes against the wall, same with Piper. So Phoebe comes downstairs and says the spell, since it was only Phoebe who said it and not the power of three Shax only got wounded. Phoebes calls Leo to heal Piper and Prue. So Leo heals them. Phoebe went into the Underworld to find Cole, meanwhile Prue and Piper are looking for Shax in the streets. Piper and Prue see Shax and Piper uses her Power to Blow up Shax, meanwhile a New reporter got it all on tape. So its all over the new about the three powerful Halliwell sisters, meanwhile Phoebe doesn't know anything because she is still in the Underworld. There's Repoters and people all over the Halliwell house. Then a maniac comes in the house and says "Can I be Part Of Your Coven?" and Prue says "No this is our house get out of here!" and Prue uses her powers to throw her out. As the maniac come out of the house crying saying "There Mean Witches". The maniac gets so mad that she shoots Piper right through the stomach. Prue get in her car and trays to go to the hospital but people won't let her through ,so Prue uses her powers to move people out of the way, making people wanna kill her more. They got to the hospital but Piper didn't make it. Meanwhile Phoebe is in the Underworld.Phoebe finds out that they have been exposed, so Phoebe asks Cole to ask the source if he can reverse time. The Source says he will only reverse time if Phoebe promises to stay here in The Underworld, so Cole told Phoebe what the source told him. Phoebe says "What would Make him think i would make a deal like that?" and then Cole says, "So you can save one of your sisters lives." Leo goes to the hospital to find out the Piper really is dead so he tells Phoebe that its true. Then Phoebe agrees to stay only if Cole will go back to warn Piper and Prue about the exposer and death of Piper. Back at the hospital SWAT is about the shoot Prue, but the second before they do time is rewound back when they were at the manor with the doctor but this time Phoebe wasn't there to call Leo to heal Prue and Piper, so the doctor get throw in the wall too. The doctor died and so did Prue. But this is what I didn't get, if Piper was throw against the wall too how come only Prue died? Why did they not show Leo come and heal Piper and Leo trying to heal Prue? If you know the answer please e-mail me at angelpuss924@yahoo.com PS. I miss Prue but I like Paige too and i'm glad the show continued

Trusting on Cole Again
claudio_carvalho28 April 2007
Prue and Piper bring Dr. Griffiths to their home to save him from the Sauce's assassin Shax. While Phoebe looks in the Book of Shadow how to vanquish the demon, Prue and Piper fight and chase Shax on the streets to destroy him. However, they are filmed and exposed live in the television news as witches. They become national sensation with a crowd in front of their house. Phoebe trusts on Cole and goes to the underworld with Leo to ask him to summon Tempus and revert time while a fanatic woman shots Piper, who dies. The source proposes Phoebe to stay with him and in return he would save her sister. Phoebe accepts the deal, and the time is reverted to the moment Shax is attacking Prue, Piper and Dr. Griffits.

"All Hell Breaks Loose" is a good but incoherent episode. With Piper dead and The Power of Three destroyed, why should The Source revert time to save her? But this dramatic show is certainly one of the best of the Third Season and let the viewers anxiously waiting for the next episode. My vote is nine.

One Of The Bests.
SeeJay_8827 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is the episode that ended the charmed one's destiny. With the flick of a demon's wrist, the charmed ones were no more. "All Hell Breaks Loose" finishes off the third season and the first set of sisters. Prue, Piper + Phoebe save the life of a prominent doctor who was to be assassinated by the source's hit-man, Shax. With only hurting Shax, Piper + Prue rush to an alley beside the manor, where they defeat Shax for the time being. Unbeknownst to them, they do so on live national news. With Phoebe in the underworld trying to reconnect her love with Cole, Piper + Prue are left to deal with the exposure themselves. With reporters surrounding the manor and everyone wanting a piece of the witches, Prue + Piper are confused as what to do, sending Leo to the underworld to return Phoebe. After vanquishing Shax, again on national television, the girls head home. Ambushed by a crazed fan, Prue sends her flying out the manor and seething down the driveway, claiming they're "mean witches". Searching for a cure for the exposure, the girls head into the living room discussing they're possible future. Prue feeling the situation more than Piper, worries about the safety of their lives. Piper, suddenly is shot through the window by the rejected fan, screaming "The Wicked Witch Is Dead". Prue helping a struggling Piper to her car, uses her powers on the flocks of reporters and supporters in a fit of raged desperation to clear the way to get to the hospital. When there, Piper's lungs fail and she dies in Prue's arms gasping "I Love You". SWAT men swarm outside ready to take the presumed threat Prue in to custody. Cole seeks the source's help, who tells him, he will reverse time, only if Phoebe will cross over to the dark side. Phoebe refuses, but is swayed when met news of Piper's death. Her only request is that she is to be able to warn her sisters about the attack. The source agrees and time is rewound, second before Prue is assassinated. Back to the morning of the first attack. Piper and Prue search for Phoebe. But before they know it, Shax appears to kill Dr. Griffiths. Pushing him out of the, Prue takes an energy ball in the chest and is thrown through the parlor wall along with Piper. Dr. Griffiths is killed and Shax blows out the doors and the glass breaks. The screen fades to black as we are left to wonder about the future of Prue, Piper + Phoebe Halliwell.

Despite some logical issues, this is such a strong episode wonderfully directed by Shannon. Hope she's still proud of it cause a lot still holds up.

Bye Prue Hello Sob!
d_man00618 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This episode of Charmed changed everything! The show is about to end it's third season, and all hell IS breaking loose in this episode. The Charmed ones bring an Innocent named Dr. Griffiths to the manor the protect him from Shax, The Sources assassin. When Shax attacks, he blasts in as a tornado and then corporealizes into his demon skin. He blasts Prue threw a wall which totally knocks her out and practically kills her. Then blasts Piper threw what is left of the wall. Phoebe comes from the attic and says the vanquishing spell before Shax came kill the doctor. But being the Power of One, it just wounds him.Leo comes to heal the other sisters and Prue wants to find Shax and destroy him for real. Phoebe, meanwhile is in the Underworld trying to find Cole. When Prue and Piper go out into the street to find the demon, the demon finds them. After their battle, the witches realize that a camera caught everything! When they get back to Manor trying to battle the media and after they vanquished Shax, a a witch gone kookoo shoots Piper. Prue uses her telekinesis to move people out of the way so she can get to the hospital. But they get their to late and Piper dies. And just when Prue is about to get shot, time is rewound to where they bring Dr. Griffiths to the Manor. Shax blows in and blasts Prue and Piper. But Phoebe is still in the Underworld so Shax kills the doctor and blasts out of the Manor. When Leo finally comes, he can't heal Prue. Prue is dead and so is the Power of Three. For Now. Personally. this episode was sad. Prue was the strongset of all of them. I would love to have her power of telekinesis. i really don't think Phoebe should of went to the Underworld because if she didn't, Shax wouldn't have killed Prue. But Paige brings The Power of Three together again and I'm happy with the show's progress

OK LETS GET SOME THINGS STRAIGHT
brandonnels24 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So.. to clear some more things up that some people are missing. In Rose McGowens book Brave she explains a little bit on what the writers of Charmed had in mind for her entrance in the then up coming season 4. Rose was supposed to bring in a new audience to the show to boost the ratings. The show wasn't even supposed to last another season after season 4 because the rates were so low. But with the new audience and with a new sister that Rose brought to life, it brought enough rating to last them another 4 seasons. Now with the ending of Season 3, the rating we're so low that they had no idea if they were going to get picked up for another season. So the writiers had to create an episode that yes, ends on a cliff hanger, and has some kind of closure (and when I say "closure" I use that term loosely). Ending the show with the cliff hanger of, Is Prue and Piper going to make it? what's going to happen to Phoebe? It had an ending in itself so that if the show didn't get picked up for another season it would have a ending that gave the audience closure of "well... they probably all died." So there's that explanation. Now with the ending of the whole series. The writer and producers reached out to Shannon to come back for the series finale but she refused because she didn't like how they were going to bring Prue back in and it wasn't "original".. you can find this clip on YouTube when Shannon is asked if they tried to include her in the show after she was killed off. So that explains why they didn't show her face or anything in the finale. BUT they did mention her in the finale when Prue was able to help the 3 sister by Astro projecting them in the Magic School. So yes she was mentioned in the finale and even through out the last 4 season.

Warning: Spoilers
Am I the only one who felt like this was overkill? I like the episode, but it's too much.

How the hell did that woman walk thru a crowd, with police, carrying a rifle, climb up on the van and stand there long enough to take aim and no one saw it?

All hell breaks loose part II response plus plot hole Warning: Spoilers
For those that somehow believe that there was a part two that aired only once have terrible memories. Think about it...people that are looking for clips can't find that episode because it doesn't exist. While on that night May 17, 2001 Charmed was on for two hours but the first hour contained a repeat then the season 3 finale. There's no special tape or scene rights withheld by Shannen Doherty. I do want to point out one other thing...in the beginning of this episode the girls walk in with the doctor because of Phoebe's premonition, I don't think anyone caught this but if they reversed time without Phoebe; Prue, Piper nor the doctor would have would have been in the place like the opening scene, so the producers should have filmed a different scene to do a cliffhanger. After watching this series a million times I just noticed.

The End of the Original Charmed Ones
tonishamcphee25 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
So we've all seen this episode and know that it ends with the death of Prue because we have also seen the following episode which is Season 4, Episode 1. In my opinion this episode was written so that which ever actress got the ax, it could be fully explained in the Season 4 opener. Personally I think they picked the wrong one. If it's true that TPTB had to choose because neither actress wanted to work together anymore, then the choice was obvious because Shannen and Holly carried the final episode of Season 3 and did so brilliantly. Granted I liked Alyssa as the spoiled wayward baby sister but she wasn't enough to keep me watching. I probably would have stopped watching after the third episode of the first season. What gets me most though is that the moment Pheobe found out that her sisters were in trouble she didn't drop what she was doing and run back to their side. Instead she stays with Cole, which makes no sense~(hell it just didn't make sense that she would leave her sisters period, in the middle of a battle to protect an innocent). Silly little girl chasing a man around hell literally and in the meanwhile you're sisters are in dire peril? Lost all respect for Pheobe, especially when you watch the season again and see that one, the relationship between Cole and Pheobe was boring and two, their relationship was boring mostly because they didn't have any chemistry. In season 3, episode 14, was the first time I saw Cole have chemistry and it was with Prue when he had her up against the wall when they arrived in the ghost town, and not let me force my tongue down your throat Pheobe. Pheobe forced that relationship, it was never going to end well and it cost her sister her life and for what? A man she wasn't going to end up with anyway? Just Sad and Selfish! They traded Prue for Paige and Paige is as fascinating as watching paint dry. Could she be anymore boring? And it certainly didn't help that from Season 4 until it's end that it was no longer "Charmed" but instead "The Pheobe Show." I stayed because I fell in love with Piper, and the coupling of Piper & Leo, because they had chemistry. All in all, the shows ends here for me. The rest of the seasons are me fast forwarding through "The Pheobe Show" so I can see what's going on with Piper. However, in reality, I hope bridges were mended because the chemistry of the original "Charmed Ones" was undeniable and I don't think that it was all just acting. I think they had a good relationship until life got in the way, but then again, isn't that always just the case?

The Hospital l Scene
laura_self19 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
right the hospital scene with Holly and Shannon was done brilliantly it starts off with Piper On A gurney looking very badly injured, the docs race her into a resuscitation room & they move her from the gurney onto a bed and Prue Holds Her Hand from that point on it is obvious that Piper is having a lot of trouble breathing and her lungs are failing, as she turns to beg of Prue to not leave her side she gaps "don't go i love you and then her pulse drops and she goes into cardiac arrest & the monitor shows a clear flat line & the nurses go into full out trauma mode & bring in a defibrillator Prue Steps back from the bed in horror as the doctors desperately try to shock her dying sisters heart but there is no response and she is tragically pronounced dead well great scene well done girls

What so many of you missed..
Jhawker91131 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
So many of your reviews ask how did Phoebe get out of the underworld at the end of the show. At the beginning of season 4 when Phoebe is asking Cole to come to the funeral he says " I shouldn't the Source has every bounty hunter out looking for me since I saved you". That's not word for word since I am not watching the DVD right now but its close. I don't know exactly when the decision on accepting Shannen's request for "Me or Alyssa have to go". Since Alyssa's popularity was higher then Shannoe's at the time, and since Shannen had caused a similar stunt on an earlier series, it was an easy choice to let Shannon go. I am guessing the last episode was in the CAN (filming completed) before the ultimatum. So they had to make a quick change to the ending without having Shannon to make any changes. That's why the ending is so disjointed in my opinion. I am guessing they cut and pasted parts of the original final to make it workable, but not the best.As the show ends we can only guess who lives or dies. If Shannen ,Holly or Alyssa die or get saved. That's a lot of if's for a final. It's sad Shannen left the show but ego's are hard to deal with in celebrities. Shannen backed herself into a corner thinking they would let Alyssa go and she lost. Sad because it was a great cast.

This Episode Has Unanswered Questions
starfire0927 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Why oh why did this episode end the way it did? Not only was it confusing in the way Pru dies, with unanswered questions but even more so was the fact that Phoebe shows up in the episode following with NO EXPLANATION! I mean she made a deal to stay in the underworld so how come she was released? Also the source ordered one of his minion's to kill the witch, so why didn't that happen?

This was very confusing and upsetting because otherwise this would have been a great last episode for Season 3. I am really wondering now due to the other comments I read if there was a missing episode because I really don't understand why there are gaps in the story here and there...

All Hell Break's Loose
spinningwheels31 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
There is a simple answer for the 'mystery' of Prue's death. The Source sent demons to delay Cole and Leo. Since Prue's injury was a massive head injury, any delay was going to be terminal. Whereas Piper's injuries were abdominal and therefore had a bit more time. When Leo healed them the first time he said it was 'very close' (and that was with Phoebe there to call him quickly). Any delay was going to cause Prue to die. A long delay would have seen Piper dead as well. And there you have it, the simple answer to the demise of the oldest Halliwell sister. My only issue is the changing of the Dad. I love James Read as Victor. And every time I see the first introduction of Victor, the only episode with the Tony Denison,I keep thinking he is a demon from the get-go...I guess because I love James Read's Victor so much.

One Of The Most Shocking Episodes EVER!
nickgp35 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This was it! i would have never expected the ending if i didn't already know the behind the scenes stuff.

The one thing that i hated was that why was Shannon kicked off and not Alyssa. i hate her i would rather her character die that Shannon's. what was funny is that in the scene where piper is dieing on the hospital bed and Prue was crying by her side i started crying too lol. at the time that this aired i was about 10yo and my favorite character was Piper from the beginning so i was saying to myself if she dies then i will not see the show anymore! lol

then the whole go back in time thing was a shocker and really good. i also blame Pheobe for Prue's death because instead of being with her sisters she had to be a slutty bi*** and be with her good for nothing demon boyfriend.

but i think this episode will be now and forever one of my favorites and a CHRMED classic.

FOREVER CHARMED! Blessed Be!

is not incoherent
maplaver18 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
this episode is not incoherent like another person said. the source agreed to help because he was not going to keep his word, if you pay attention... he says after she (phoebe) agrees to stay down there in hell, "GET RID OF HER AND BALTHAZOR SO I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THEM IN THE FUTURE"... and also, he didn't let COLE WARN THE SISTERS LIKE PHOEBE ASKED IN EXCHANGE OF ACCEPTING THE DEAL, that's why PRUE DIED, because she got hit harder than PIPER and on the head, and there was no PHOEBE to call for LEO this time, and in the past LEO SAID THAT SHE ALMOST GOT HERSELF KILLED. pay more attention next time! and there is not a "TO BE CONTINUED..." after this episode. it is the ending of season 3, and on season 4 they can't show anything from PRUE because she owns the rights of it "PRUE", so the producers would have to pay her for whatever they show. this is the last episode she is in!

Being 56, I saw part 2 when it aired live on tv only once and that was it.
patriciamassiwer26 April 2024
Part 2 of All Hell Breaks Loose is absolutely real. I saw it live when it originally aired. You will not find part 2 in any dvd or vhs or whatever, because it was never released for these formats due to the conflicts and legal parameters. It only aired live, on tv, once and that was it. Fans just created fake part 2's online to try and recreate the actual episode for comfort.

It's too bad that the rights to part 2 were not released because when I watched it live, it was intense, emotional and well done. It is not unusual to not have a real recording of part 2 because it wasn't totally common to do this. We just watched tv live and that was that and plus we didn't have dvr, on demand, nor streaming. I was 33 back then (2001) and even though one could technically record tv shows onto a vhs tape, I wouldn't say it was common. Anyways, I don't care if some people believe that part 2 doesn't exist because I know it actually does because I saw it live that one time it aired and I know others who have as well. That's the truth. Period. When something is true, it just stands. It's like saying you don't believe in the sun or the moon. It doesn't matter if you don't believe in the sun or moon, the fact is, it's true that they do exist no matter what some people may think.

Anyhow, it's really not that important in the grand scheme of things. I just figured I would write this because I actually saw it myself. I'm glad I have it in my memory banks. Maybe someday, the people holding this part 2 back from the public, will release it so everyone else can enjoy it as well.

The best but worst episode ever.
supercute052 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Piper, Prue and Phoebe bring Dr. Griffiths to the Manor in order to try and save him from The Source's personal assassin, Shax. Whilst Phoebe looks in the Book of Shadows for a spell to vanquish Shax, Prue and Piper are attacked by Shax and chase him into the street. Unbeknownst to Prue and Piper, they were filmed by a news reporter and her cameraman using their powers and broadcasted live on national television. With Phoebe in the Underworld, Prue, Piper, and Leo must find a way to reverse the damage done. Leo goes down to Phoebe, and tells her that the Charmed Ones have been exposed as witches. On the surface, Piper is shot by a manic witch-wannabe, and Prue has to take her to the hospital. The problem here is that the crowds are blocking the driveway. So Prue has to use her magic on the crowd, and they go to the hospital. Piper is pronounced dead, and a SWAT team moves in. Leo learns of Piper's death, and goes down to tell Phoebe. Cole is asked to ask The Source to reset time, and The Source agrees; only if Phoebe turns to the dark side. Phoebe agrees, but the deal will shatter them. Up on the surface, Prue and Piper are battling Shax. Prue shouts out for Phoebe, who unbeknownst to them is in the Underworld. Shax throws Piper and Prue through a wall, and Dr. Griffiths out of a window. Prue is not pronounced dead until the Season 4 Premiere episode, "Charmed Again, Part One".

"All Hell Breaks Loose" is a gripping episode, and it made me sit on the edge of my seat. Sad that Prue's dead, but happy that there will be five more seasons of Charmed. My vote; 10 out of 10. EXCELLENT

all hell breaks lose: mystery of prue's death solved by me
kydeja15 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
i'm not going to ramble on about it but i'm just going to make it brief. basically for those who don't know how prue actually died........... the first time round the demonic assassin comes hit piper and prue with an energy ball they fly through the wall blood everywhere. phoebe the third sister comes down the stairs, says the spell which send him away but not vanquished.(NEEDS THE POWER OF THREE)leo comes heals them both and so on. they get exposed along the line and the only way the can be saved is for a demon named tempus to turn back time. the only way he can do that is is phoebe stays in the underworld. she agrees, tempus turns back time. it now around 7:00 in the morning again. demon comes strucks piper and prue with energy ball. they fly through wall again. but this time phoebe isn't there to say the spell to fend demon off. demon kills doctor. doctor flies through window. he is dead. demon goes in a whirl wing type thing and glass on the doors shatter which is a great effect bye the way and there is and airy sound. thats where it ends. NOW.......... what the whole world doesn't know if they didn't pay attention to the next episode. although what i'm about to say wasn't shown its what happens trust me................ because this time there was no phoebe to call for leo this time he arrives later. piper survives because her injuries wern't as fatal as prue's and leo heals her first before prue so by that time prue is already dead. there mystery solved. ps calling for prue with a spell should have worked!!! and she should have made a surprise appearance in the last ever episode.OK i did ramble on

To Maplaver re your review
mtanyasmail1 May 2016
OK so my rating is on the actual show. And I know I am like 10 years late but I still love it and watch the reruns and own the entire series on DVD. What bugged me was the review/comment by the person named maplaver that was titled "is not incoherent" or something to that effect. Obviously you didn't do ANY research before commenting. Your "explanation" is completely wrong. As stated before by a few people, there was a second part but it was pulled after the departure that was less than friendly by Shannen D. Since we have heard about her being quite difficult to deal with this does not surprise me. I am however VERY disappointed that with all Aaron Spellings money he couldn't have found a way around it contractually to allow the second episode to be included. It is one of the most IMPORTANT episodes of the whole series! For such a long time I would be watching and when they would go from Season 3 last episode to Season 4 first one I'd be scratching my head! It's ridiculous. We are left to just surmise what happened. It did take me a long time to warm up to Paige as the new third sister but eventually I did. I also liked every made for TV movie I have seen Shannen in and it seems such a shame that a talented actress such as herself could be so unprofessional and ruin so many aspects of her career. Anyway, maybe one day somehow those of us who did not get to see part 2 of that episode will get to see it. One can only hope. :)

Warning: Spoilers
i think this episode was brilliant but what i don't understand is the ending.. i have seen on a TV episode that there is a part two or something like that because Leo goes back to save them but Prue is already dead and then the episode ends. im just very confused, if you could help me id be so thankful. i hate it when i don't understand the endings of programs. am i thinking of another episode, because i am certain i have seen Leo come back and pronounce that Prue is dead. also i have the box set and on the charmed again it says it has a part to but i don't see it anywhere. im not sure if the producers put it on the DVDs or not but im pretty disappointed if it was removed or something along those lines.

Charmed: All Hell Breaks Losse
vladarbd22 July 2009
Y am from Serbia, so sorry for my English! There was a second part of "All Hell Breaks Loose"!

In this episode, Source destroyed Phoebe, Shax killed Piper, and Prue... Well, Source took her soul, and burned her alive in agony!

Cole attackes Tempus (because Phoebe died), and he reset time. They killed Shax, but Dr. Griffit die. Now, they come down in Hell, and stood in front the Source. Thats a final battle.

But I must tell something: Does anyone know about Prue felt cold always before Shax attackes? Thats Cole warn (remember when Phoebe ask him to warn them?). But in the first, air part, at the beginning, Prue felt cold, isn't? So that means that Phoebe ask Cole before, so that isn't the first time at all.

That all explained in the 2nd part!

Thats why in original episode at the end writtes: TO BE CONTINUED...

Shannen Doherty got fired from the show in between seasons so they had to move ahead in season 4 without showing the conclusion to the events in the season 3 finale. I can't say it was never filmed but I can with some definitiveness that it never aired, no one has it on VHS, no one ever saw it.

It is fascinating though, that so many people seem to believe that they saw "part 2" of "All Hell Breaks Loose" back in the day when it aired. This is some kind of Mandela effect created by YouTube videos posted by fans and people's imaginations combining with the rationale that there has to be a more dramatic and coherent way to kill off a show's main character. If it existed, it would be on the internet. For sure. Or as a bonus on DVD.

The good news is you didn't miss out on something others saw and you have to miss. The bad news is there is nothing to find no matter how hard you look. The uninteresting truth is that we were all cheated, having to lose such an important TV character in such an unsatisfying and incoherent way.
