Horatio and the team, reunited, encounter the Mala Noche gang while investigating a shooting that killed an officer and the rape of a maid.

An inmate arrives to pay respect to his mother at her funeral. As he approaches the casket, he is gunned down, along with his police escort and the other guests, by a man who has been hiding in the coffin. The case becomes more complicated when the gunman later broke into a house and brutally raped the house keeper before stealing one of the cars. Back at the lab, the members are introduced to the newly assigned Natalia Boa Vista who will work on unresolved cases.—Ploy P.

Inmate Aberto Fuentes got permission to attend his mother's funeral, but after he asks his handcuffs loosened and knocks a guard down, both die as the entire escort is shot at with an automatic gun by a bandanna-wearer hidden in the casket. It seems the shooting must be internal to Fuentes's gang, the Nicaraguan civil war-sprouted Mala Noche, which avoids drugs but neither other crimes nor extreme risks. Later Dale Livingston hides with his wife and offspring in a safe room in his luxury villa, while their maid Celia is raped by a Mala Noche before he steals a car; Celia tells Horatio the father to be is her employer. Meanwhile the team welcomes Natalia Boa Vista, who got federal grants for a major make-over of the lab.
