THE BROTHERS BRANNAGAN – The Damaged Dolls - 1960
This series, which ran during 1960 to 1961, stars Stephen Dunne and Mark Roberts as a pair of brothers who are private investigators. The two are based in Phoenix, Arizona. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes. This is episode 12 in the series.
Stephen Dunne and Mark Roberts are involved in two separate cases. Roberts is off for a week as a body guard on a yacht. Dunne is hired by pretty Joan Evans. Evans is a showgirl in a Vegas nightclub casino. Her friend and fellow showgirl, knockout Pamela Duncan is being blackmailed. Someone sent her a small doll with a cut cheek. Pay 5 grand or this is what will happen to you.
Dunne goes undercover and gets himself hired at the club as a fall guy for the club comedian, Jackie Coogan. Things take a downright nasty turn, when Miss Duncan shows up with her face slashed. She is also dead as the proverbial doornail. In the mix as possible suspects, are casino boss, Joseph Ruskin, Coogan and club go-fer, Jon Shepodd.
Now both Evans and Jon Shepodd get packages with broken dolls and demands for cash. Dunne goes through everyone's background for possible clues. Shepodd is an ex-con, Ruskin is a swine and Coogan is in hawk up to his eyeballs with gambling debts.
Dunne soon eliminates, Shepodd and casino boss Ruskin as suspects, which leaves Coogan as the most likely culprit. Dunne sets up a sting with Ruskin's cooperation. He waits for Coogan to make his nightly trip to the tables. Then Dunne and Evans join him. Ruskin works the old underhand deal and Evans is soon up 17 large. She then quits and heads for her room with the cash.
Needless to say Coogan is indeed the villain of the piece. He comes a calling for the cash Evans won. Dunne of course has other plans and the two exchange fists and a few gunshots before the bounder, Coogan is put down. Coogan was so desperate to pay off his debts that he had resorted to murder and blackmail.
This one is the weakest of the series episodes that I've seen so far. Jackie Coogan, some will recall as, "Uncle Fester," in the 1964 to 1966 comedy series, THE ADDAMS FAMILY.
