Playing the anti-hero
safenoe19 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Benedict Arnold is the anti-hero of the American Revolution and in Everyone Can't Be George Washington, Peter finds it irksome that he has to play a reviled villain. But if Everyone Can't Be George Washington was made say in the early 2000s, Peter would have embraced playing Benedict Arnold as the anti-hero that audiences would have a guilty pleasure being drawn to, along the lines of Walter White, Tony Soprano, Don Draper, Saul Goodman, Dexter, Vic Mackey at al. Really, the audience would have adored Peter's performance as out most famous anti-hero, and George Washington would have been an adorable footnote for good people.

BEEN THERE AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER!

Sam Locke wrote this funny episode, who was connected to so many classic sitcoms, such as MCHALES NAVY and ALL IN THE FAMILY. The list goes on.

He also probably wrote from experience as all of us kids of the 70s got caught up into something like Peter got himself into. Pete auditions for a historical class play, hoping to play the heroic George Washington --but instead gets the role of Benedict Arnold??? A fate worse than death!

It's just a role, right? If you remember anything about heroes and villains as a kid, nobody wants to star as a villain. He also becomes the school outcast. Worse. How many of us feared that absolutely terrible role in a school play?

Pete tries to escape this mess, and in some clever ways, but you know he's doomed!

Look for comedy veteran Sara Seegar as Peter's drama teacher, fondly remembered as the second Mrs. Wilson opposite Gale Gordon on DENNIS THE MENACE. She also had many funny parts on BEWITCHED.

I agree with the last reviewer, the climactic death scene is hilarious, especially if you majored in acting where about anything could go wrong.

By the way, check out Jan's cool plaid pants. So 70s.

Another classic episode. SEASON 4 EPISODE 12 Paramount/ABC dvd box set.

Peter tries out for the part of George Washington in the school play but is cast as Benedict Arnold instead.

A funny Peter episode, some good laughs in this one. After getting the role of Benedict Arnold, Peter's friends tease him and call him traitor. He tries a few ways of getting out of it but nothing works. A subplot has Jan doing the sets and special effects for the play, with help from Mike. Peter gets a funny death scene in the play.
