Helo discovers the truth
Tweekums16 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This episode opened on the newly repaired Cloud Nine, a luxury ship with a large dome which mimics outdoor life, so the people can walk through perfectly manicured gardens under a beautiful blue sky even though they are in deep space. Here the newly elected government will convene for the first time with one person representing each of the original colonies; there are a couple of surprises the Sagittarians have elected the former terrorist Tom Zarek and Caprica has elected Dr. Baltar, the latter was a surprise even to him as he didn't know that he'd been nominated! As soon as the first meeting starts Zarek demands a vote to select a vice president. He is quickly nominated and President Roslin persuades one of her advises, Wallace Gray, to stand against him. When Apollo and Starbuck get involved in a bar fight with one of Zarek's supporters Starbuck notices that an apparent bystander has a gun hidden in a case that opened when he dropped it. Once captured this man refuses to confirm that he is working for Zarek but it is assumed that he was planning to assassinate the president once Zarek was elected vice president. Unfortunately he is murdered before he can be forced to admit this. Fearing that the president's life will be in constant danger if Zarek is her deputy Roslin is forced to change her choice for vice president, persuading Gray to stand down in favour of Baltar who preformed particularly well on television, even with a more popular candidate the vote is very close but ultimately Baltar gets the job. Back on Caprica Helo and Sharon reach Delphi. By now Helo has come to the conclusion that there are Cylons that look human but he doesn't suspect that Sharon is one until he sees another that looks just like her!

Even though it was a comparatively minor part of the story I found the events on Caprica more interesting that those on the fleet, understandable Helo is shocked to learn that Sharon is a Cylon; it will be interesting to see what happens between the two of them now, she clearly cares about him even though he should be her enemy. The political activities on the fleet weren't that interesting; it doesn't seem that likely that a civilisation whose population had been reduced to that of a medium sized town would continue to have a political system that it had as a huge civilisation. Some humour was to be found there at least; I was amused when the president interrupted Baltar in the toilet to ask him to run for vice president... and only after she leaves do we learn that he was 'entertaining' a female reporter in one of the cubicles before the interruption. As usual James Callis was entertaining as Baltar and Mary McDonnell put in a good performance as the president; her character has changed from when she first got the job, then she was unsure of herself now she has become an arch manipulator, ditching one candidate as soon as she finds somebody more likely to win. It was also good to see Richard Hatch back as Tom Zarek; I can't make up my mind whether he is just another self-serving politician or if he genuinely wants to improve life for the people of the fleet.

Battlestar Galactica - Colonial Day
Scarecrow-882 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So Gaius Baltar ends up banging a "reporter" who is wearing no panties and goes out of her way to let him know she's interested as the two wind up in a restroom stall, elected Roslin's Vice President, stirring up popularity with "constituents" and the public despite "reformed prisoner/terrorist" Zarek gaining momentum, and is "given permission" from the Six in his mind to have sex with any woman he so chooses (...as long as he remembers she has his heart, and can rip it from his chest!). Oh, and he even gets to dance with an elegant Starbuck, "cleaning herself up good" to prove Apollo a point. "Colonial Day" is more or less a politically charged episode, obviously pulling from what existed at that time in 2004/2005, revealing that Roslin was dead-set on stopping Zarek from securing the power he so desires, that of being her Vice President. Even Apollo, who considered Zarek a charismatic figure gaining traction with the poor and less-statured, forewarns Roslin that when able her life would be in danger if he were to receive the Vice President position he's after. On a restored Colonial ship that mimics a sunny, green Caprica City park, folks representing each ship in the fleet, and a mouthpiece that speaks for them, Roslin chairs a political function allowing all dignitaries the opportunity to voice concerns and be aware of the ongoing crises (their possible solutions) and developments all involved could (or would) be affected by. An assassin gets past security carrying a case with a pistol, but during a fight between Apollo and a Zarek supporter (with Starbuck, still dealing with her bum leg, while trying to use her cane as a protective and defensive weapon), he is discovered, later found dead in an interrogation room, perhaps himself executed in order to maintain the secret of who orchestrated his mission. Starbuck and Apollo are called upon to be the security on the ship, not getting information from their prisoner/assassin in order to determine who sent him and why. Zarek is assumed to be the assassin's benefactor but he tells Roslin he was not responsible for his being on the ship or assassination. Roslin's eyeing Baltar as her Vice President, "relieving" a colleague (and loyal friend who later comments on his surprise that she has become another cutthroat politician) of the duty when threat of Zarek being elected become too great a risk, thrusts the brilliant scientist into the limelight and gives him quite a forum to voice his opinion, gaining prestige and budding fame....Six reminds him that she's still around even as it is clear the attention engrosses him. Adama eventually attending a gala and dancing with a startled Roslin caps off quite an interesting episode, with Helo on Caprica realizing Sharon is a cylon much to his dismay!

Ellen once again reveals motivations for her husband, Tigh, who would prefer to be anywhere else, and clearly flirts with Zarek (who seems just as interested in her). Ellen doesn't do anything subtle!

Colonial Day
Prismark1025 February 2021
Zarek (Richard Hatch) returns and he notes that President Roslin has a weakness. There is no Vice President.

Zarek proposes that a VP role is created and he wants to run for that post.

Roslin realises that if Zarek becomes VP, he might then try to arrange her assassination. After all he is next in line.

There is a lot of political chicanery from both Zarek and Roslin. As a convicted terrorist, Zarek is a divisive character.

Roslin is not above any dirty tricks neither and spots that Gaius is charismatic and should run for office.

I can see why Richard Hatch was tempted to appear in the rebooted BSG. The producers certainly gave him a layered character. One who could easily be charming yet lethally cunning and duplicitous.

In Caprica, Helo makes an important discovery as well regarding the Cylon clones and who they resemble.

That too is a welcome development regarding Helo's story.

Democracy in the Eyes of the Unbearable President Roslin
claudio_carvalho14 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The twelve representatives of the survivors of their colonies gather in the luxury liner Cloud 9 for a meeting to discuss political issues. Sagittarion selects Tom Zerek to represent their interests and the former terrorist raises the need of a Vice-President in case Roslin has any problem. His proposal is accepted and he becomes the only candidate. President Roslin gives her best effort trying to find an opponent and promising that Tom Zarek would never be her Vice-President. Meanwhile the abusive Captain Apollo, who is in charge of security with Starbuck, turns off the speech of Zarek, creating confusion with his followers, and accidentally they find a man with a weapon. In occupied Caprica, Helo discovers the truth about the evolution of the Cylons to the human form.

The discovery of Helo in the end of this episode saves this show. The rest is the Machiavellian fight for power of the despicable President Roslin, using the force and all the political dirty tricks against the coherent speech of Tom Zarek. I am not sure whether I will watch the Second Season of "Battlestar Galactica" since I hate this unbearable and arrogant character, who seems to be the owner of the truth, reflecting the behavior of many politicians. My vote is five.
