Counterfeiter Walt Hathaway was probably based on Edward Mueller. Mr. Mueller printed and passed one dollar bills on Manhattan's West Side for eleven years. When apprehended in 1948, 73 year old Mueller explained he printed money as he needed it to supplement his income.
