The final performance of Kay Medford
kevinolzak28 June 2014
"Dietrich's Arrest" concludes with Harris having to book Dietrich on charges of 'unlawful assembly' and 'failure to disburse,' at the anti-nuclear rally he attended to peacefully protest. In opposition is nuclear engineer Nelson Haskell (Allan Miller, second of four), carrying a container of atomic water that he insists is harmless, staunchly defending his profession by passionately and effectively refuting Dietrich's one sided, left wing propaganda about the dangers of nuclear power, rather than its long term benefits, a rational (and certainly rare) discussion from both sides. Both Inspector Luger from downtown and Lt. Ben Scanlon from Internal Affairs (George Murdock, eighth of twelve) show up to put in their two cents worth on Dietrich's arrest, with Luger unintentionally referring to Scanlon as 'Scallion!' Barney's application for a $9000 loan to purchase his apartment is accepted...by the Bank of Korea! And in an ironic bit of casting, veteran actress Kay Medford made her third and last appearance on the show as overnight cleaning lady Lila Wakeman (her third different character), the final performance of her lengthy career, preceding her untimely death one month following this episode's Mar 6 broadcast. Her unsurprising but delightful response to Wojo after everyone else goes home after a long day at the office: "we'll talk!"
