Will Tara divulge Steed's location?
Tweekums20 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
After an attempt is made on the life of Miranda Loxton, the key witness in the trial of members of Murder International, Steed is given the job of protecting her. He takes her to a childhood home that nobody else he knows has been to. Shortly afterwards Tara is captured by a pair of thugs who are part of Murder International; she is drugged but overhears them talking about a booby-trap at Steed's house that will kill Mother. She manages to escape and finds herself at Steed's house; as she enters a bomb explodes. When she wakes up she is surrounded by medical and military personal who sedate her and take her to hospital. Once there she is told that her legs have been broken and Mother has been killed; she is also told that Steed and Miranda are in grave danger unless she can work out where they are hiding. Gradually she remembers details of a house Steed had told her about… unfortunately the people looking after her aren't what they seem. Steed meanwhile is passing the time playing strategy games with Miranda; something that she is surprisingly good at.

This is a rather fun episode as it is so different. For most of the time Steed and Tara are separated and much of what we see isn't what it seems. Of course most people will have guessed that something isn't right about what is happening to Tara as soon as she is told that she is seriously injured and Mother is dead… that doesn't matter though as it means that there is concern for both Tara and later Steed when she divulges enough information to find him. These tense scenes are nicely balanced by the entertaining scenes between Patrick Macnee and Angela Douglas as Steed and Miranda; the latter also had a fun introduction as she was returning from a fancy dress party, dressed as a clown, when the attempt was made on her life. Overall a solid episode which is less surreal than most.

Waiting for the penny to drop, a good episode.
Sleepin_Dragon16 September 2022
Steed is tasked with looking after Miranda Loxton, who's a key witness in a murder trial, but who's life is under constant threat. Tara is questioned by The Military, who try to learn Steed's secret location.

It's a good watch, a good solid episode, I don't think a case could be made that this is a unique or particularly distinctive episode, it isn't, some of the devices used here have been used before, but on its own merits, it's a good episode.

It plays out as a straight up thriller, so don't expect crazy tie shops or wild perfumers, it is of course beautifully made and produced.

Steed's angle is amusing enough, Macnee and Angela Douglas shared some really nice scenes, she managed to make Miranda a really sweet, but interesting character. Best known for the Carry on films it's perhaps fair to say, Douglas does a fine job, packed with energy.

I personally thought The Tara angle was more interesting, I think it's fair to say you quickly know the score, not enough was done to make things feel real, but it was nicely done, and the realisation was perhaps the best scene of the episode.

7/10.

Requiem for Mother
kevinolzak16 May 2011
"Requiem" starts out well, but bogs down quickly as the script tips its hand far too soon. Steed spends the entire episode on special assignment, guarding the key witness (Angela Douglas, "Dance with Death") in a case against Murder International, while Tara tries to warn Mother of a bomb threat at Steed's apartment. Too late to prevent the fatal explosion, she winds up in a hospital bed being interrogated by Major Firth (John Cairney), who needs to locate Steed because he too is carrying a bomb with him. John Paul, soon to star in DOOMWATCH, plays the doctor, with Kathja Wyeth, of Hammer's "Twins of Evil" (1971), as the nurse. Also featuring Harvey Ashby ("The Decapod" and "Death at Bargain Prices") and John Baker ("You Have Just Been Murdered"), at least this episode is a huge improvement over "Homicide and Old Lace."

Warning: Spoilers
Another reviewer has said that the villains do not actually recreate Steed's flat, just the remnants after an explosion has occurred. I have watched the episode again, and when Tara arrives at the fake flat it is intact. Then it goes up like Zabriskie Point. So it was not destroyed until after Tara arrived. ShadeGrenade's point was that the villains knew what the flat looked like, and there was no way they believably could have done this. Never mind. It is still a fun episode.

Requiem

Steed is assigned to protect a witness of a killing until she gives evidence at the trial. He takes her to his childhood haunt, saying no one, except two people, know where they are. Mother is one of them, but apparently he is dead and the second person who knows is Tara King, who unfortunately gets injured in an explosion meant for Steed and ends up in a sinister hospital where she is pumped for information about Miranda's hideaway. Charming Angela Douglas and John Cairney, famous for getting crushed by Talos in Jason and the Argonauts, co-stars in laidback yet suspenseful entry. Nice twist at the end.

To Kill A Clown

Warning: Spoilers
Miranda Loxton ( Angela Douglas ) is due to give evidence in court that will put away members of the crime syndicate Murder International. Naturally, the heads of said syndicate want her dead. Steed is entrusted with the job of guarding her. He takes her to a deserted house along the Thames, where he used to play as a boy. His old toys are still there.

Tara is captured by two thugs, among them the grotesque looking 'Murray' ( Denis Shaw ). She escapes, but not before being drugged. In a semi-delirious haze, she goes to Steed's flat to warn Mother. A bomb goes off, seemingly killing the wheelchair-bound intelligence boss, and injuring her.

She wakes up in a private hospital, where Major Furth ( John Cairney ) pumps her for information. Steed is unknowingly carrying a bomb on his person, and unless he is found soon he will die...

This Brian Clemens script started life as 'A Slight Case Of Reincarnation', the opening instalment of Season 2 of 'Adam Adamant Lives!'. He later reworked it a third time for the I.T.C. action series 'The Protectors' which starred Robert Vaughn and the late Nyree Dawn-Porter. 'Thinkback' also had villains seeking information by means of a scam involving a fake hospital. 'Requiem' is better than 'Thinkback', but there are unanswered questions such as how Miranda came to possess such important knowledge, and how Murder International were able to replicate Steed's flat.

Angela Douglas was married to the actor Kenneth More and appeared in three of the best 'Carry Ons' - 'Up The Khyber', 'Follow That Camel' and 'Cowboy'. She manages to look sexy even while dressed as a clown ( she had been returning from a fancy dress party when the first murder attempt took place ). John Paul, cast as 'Dr.Wells', was a year away from his role as 'Dr.Quist' in the gripping B.B.C. sci-fi drama series 'Doomwatch'. Denis Shaw worked with Don Chaffey on two episodes of 'The Prisoner' - 'Arrival' and 'Checkmate' in which he played the Village shopkeeper.

Some nice scenes involving Steed and Miranda. Surprisingly little action here, it is left to Rhonda ( Rhonda Parker ) to save the day at the end!

Interesting Episode
mcelhaney17 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A very good, serviceable episode typical of the Tara King era. Patrick Macnee is in particular good form while entertaining his guest at his old house while Tara is led through an extravagant plot in order to reveal the location of Steed and the guest he is protecting.

While some may question how the "bad guys" could so accurately recreate Steed's flat, it must be noted that what they recreate is really the remnants of his flat. However, if there is a major flaw with this episode, it is the lack of a "diabolical mastermind" as the baddies are just basically part of a larger organization.

The best scene happens late in the episode where Rhonda, Mother's silent helpmate, gets to show a glimpse of her abilities beyond answering the phone, pouring drinks and pushing Mother around in a wheelchair. Taking out 3 bad guys in roughly 3 seconds in an almost applause-worthy scene. It does make one wonder if The Avengers had been renewed for another seasons what they might have done with her. But I guess we'll never know.

Yes MISSION IMPOSSIBLE or the movie 36 HOURS by Georges Seaton, because of the fake hospital trick to push someone to talk, reveal some information. Good episode.
