This marks the debut of deputy Warren Ferguson played by Jack Burns. Sadly his character only lasted 11 shows as filling the role of Andy's deputy, originally played by Don Knotts as Barney Fife, was no easy task. Audiences never warmed to his character and Andy never had another full time deputy for the rest of the series. The role of comic foil to Andy then switched over to Goober, Howard, and Floyd, which between them provided more than enough situations to last the rest of the show.

    Warren.

There's something about Mayberry that seems to attract fascistic deputies. Maybe the writers thought it was funny to up the ante and create a character who was even more gungho and ridge and humorless than Barney Fife. They created Warren and cast the annoying Jack Burns to play him. It's hard to believe that he was once teamed up with George Carlin as a comedy duo. This is another "angry Andy" episode and it seems like the writers had no idea what direction they wanted to take the series. Watching Warren get bent out of shape over a bingo game is probably the most annoying scene and he deputizes Goober to arrest the women in charge. Thankfully his stay in Mayberry was brief.
