Pulling the emergency stop cord on a train doesn't set the brakes, but merely alerts the engine crew to the fact that someone wants the train to stop. Additionally, if the freight train was "only 100 yards in front of the passenger train when the stop was pulled- there would be no time at all to stop from speed.
