Too Close for Comfort
pensman29 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Lt. Masters is getting a medal and it is to be presented by President Grant himself. Grant is on an inspection tour of the South West. Unfortunately, there is an assassin trying to shoot the President. His first attempt was to take place at a switch station, but Rinty jumped him. Somehow The Man escapes. The switchman only remembers the man had a scar on his face. At Mesa Grande, Masters reunites with Lt. Sharp who is now on undercover detail to guard the President. We met Lt. Sharp in an earlier episode where we learned he was in Army Intelligence.

Suddenly, then there is an explosion at the bank in Mesa Grande. Nothing was taken, and we learn it was meant as a diversion to allow the assassin to get close to the President. But the train was late so the attempt on the President's life failed for the second time.

At the presentation of the medal, Rusty gets a chance to meet the President; but The Man who wants to kill the President is in the audience and Rinty growls but is ignored. The Man isn't upset the first two attempts failed but his aides Colby and Moon are getting nervous. Rusty gets an extended visit with the President, and O'Hara kids Rusty about it. Rusty tells O'Hara he believes Rinty did see The Man in the crowd, but O'Hara scoffs at the idea; Rusty decides he and Rinty will find The Man. O'Hara has second thoughts and decides he should tell Masters and Sharp. They immediately tell O'Hara to alert the men and look for Rusty and Rinty.

The Man tells Moon and Colby his new plan. They are to be on horseback, and as the President is moving down the street to the train in his carriage, they are to fire a shot and take off. In the confusion, The Man will be in the second story of a building and will have a clear shot. The Man sees Rusty and yells out the window that he is hurt to lure Rusty to his room and keep him out of the way. Grant is in his carriage on his way to the train. Rin Tin Tin catches Rusty's scent and follows it to the stairs to the room. Seeing a rifle sticking out of the window, Rinty leaps in through the window and attacks The Man. The rifle goes off alerting Masters and Sharp who capture The Man.

Rusty gets personal thanks from the President. And although Rinty deserves a medal, he can't get one. We just can't allow the country to know the President is in danger.

As I watched this episode, I had a sort of sinking feeling. What if Lee Harvey Oswald saw this episode? Is it possible? We will never know, but there were some coincidences to get one thinking.

N.B. The assassin is never given a name. He is always referred to as The Man.
