- Crooner, who's finally cracked the big screen, is suspected of rubbing out scandal sheet publisher Ransome, for threatening to expose the singer's rap sheet. Bailey & Spencer's new gumshoe Rex Randolph sets out to nab the killer, to prove the golden throat's innocence. High on Rex's checklist of suspects is comic Chick Little, who may be another of Ransome's blackmail pigeons.—David Stevens
- Mike Ransome is the publisher of a scandal sheet called The Hollywood Scene, he who and the paper which seem to operate on blackmail, he threatening to publish salacious material - which the blackmailees know he truly does have as being legitimate information - unless there is some form of payback. While many performers in Hollywood and along the Strip have a mutual dislike with Ransome, the strongest negative feelings seem to exist with Barry James, a singer who has long performed the club scene including at Dino's but has just received a big break in being noticed by a studio executive who signed him to a contract to appear in movies. Rex gets caught between Ransome and Barry, the latter who he considers a friend. Ransome is found shot in his Laurel Canyon home, he, on his proverbial deathbed, pointing the finger at Barry as the shooter. Rex tries to prove that Barry is innocent of Ransome's murder. In going about this case, Rex has to discover what information Ransome had on a number of other people who would have had motive. In the process, Rex will find that others just want him to leave the matter alone regardless of if Barry did or not kill him in order to keep all that salacious information buried with Ransome.—Huggo
