Revealing mistakes
A person who has been bed-ridden for six months would have atrophied muscles, and would require physical therapy to walk again. Yet, Reuben gets up and walks around like it's only been a few days.
It would have been impossible for Ocean's crew to have installed an underground drill in plain view, let alone take it out and install a new one to replace the broken one, without the notice of the Las Vegas City Council, the department of public works, a permit to operate the drills, in addition to massive media attention, and also impossible to accomplish in the two days as shown.
There is no guardrail in the first shot of the heliport with Rusty. However, in the next shot a guardrail has been added.
When Yen is betting on the roulette wheel and the camera shows the wheel spinning while the ball is waiting to drop, it shows a ball already stopped on the wheel.
In Bank's office, where Rusty is claiming to be a seismologist warning Bank of potential seismic activity, Bank's glasses appear and disappear between shots of his face and over his right shoulder.
When Rusty and Danny leave the storeroom after the call, Rusty keeps his mobile phone in the right hand while pushing the trolley out of the room.
On the corridor the phone is gone from his right hand. If he wanted to put away his phone, he would have naturally done it before moving out.
When Yen places a bet on the roulette wheel, he covers numbers 11,12 and 13, to fit in with the previous statement that the 'fixed' ball could be assumed to land on one of three numbers. 11,12 and 13 do not appear consecutively on a roulette wheel. If you wanted to cover a bet on '12', for example, you'd need to place chips on 12, 8 and 29 on an American table.
The tunnel boring machines used to make the Chunnel were huge and took months to assemble. There is no way that one could be transported on the back of a single tractor trailer and put into service in a matter of hours or even days. In fact, there were 11 Tunnel Boring Machines in total. Some of the machines were dismantled and removed. Some were driven steeply downwards and buried clear of the tunnel.
The design of the Bank Hotel is physically impossible. The hotel's three towers each have a twisted, arced shape. No portion of the highest level of each tower is directly above any portion of the ground level of that tower. This would make vertical elevators, like the ones Yen is shown navigating between, completely impossible.
The Bell 430 helicopter used for the theft of the diamonds could not have lifted the diamond vault. The Bell 430 has a maximum lift capacity of around 4,000 pounds, in the movie they stated that the floor thickness was 12 inches of reinforced concrete. The display vault looked to have a diameter of 12 feet, give or take a foot, reinforced concrete being 150 lb per cubic foot makes the bottom slab itself 5,652 pounds, well over the lifting capabilities of the Bell 430. Not to mention the vault casing, which was 2 inch thick concussion proof glass and the additional 12 foot diameter upper deck.
When the guys are arguing with Saul (Carl Reiner) about the difference between a "soft opening" and a "grand opening", he counters "When they opened the Flamingo, one day it was closed and the next day it was open. I know. I was there." In reality, The Flamingo Hotel and Casino built by gangster Bugsy Siegel opened over the Christmas holiday of 1946 in spite of the fact that it was incomplete. Because of the myriad of problems the casino had, Bugsy was forced to shut the casino back down for a few weeks to finish the incomplete portions of the property and fix the other problems. The casino then reopened for good in March of 1947. So, in essence, the Flamingo DID have a "soft opening" and a "grand opening". (Bugsy Siegel was ultimately murdered by his mob partners in July of 1947 for his mishandling of the casino and his alleged embezzlement of funds.)
Livingston getting busted by the "FBI" was not planned by the crew; Livingston specifically requests this be kept secret from the rest of the crew. When he is arrested and Willy Bank decides to test his fingerprints for known associates, the crew is surprised and Basher is forced to impersonate an stuntman to distract Bank. If the bust was planned, the crew should have planned for Bank to test the fingerprints (or they should have used gloves when handling the equipment). Livingston had secretly enlisted the help of Roman Nagel (Eddie Izzard) and Agent Caldwell (Bob Einstein).
When Livingston is giving Rusty the slot machine sequence for the jackpot win, the crew thinks he's in the back of a car handcuffed. Which is why they needed the cartwheel to hack Bank's computer and why Livingston didn't do the hack. But he's right back on the ear piece to give Rusty the sequence. Actually, it is Eugene who rigged the slot machine and gives Rusty the sequence.
At the dice factory revolt in Mexico, Turk Malloy throws a Molotov cocktail over the fence, yet, as the scene pans around, there is already a van fully engulfed in flames and there is no sign of the broken bottle. However, it's possible that the van was already on fire before Turk threw the bottle, and that he either missed his target or the bottle hit off-screen. Or the Molotov cocktail hit the van.
Yen refers to bowling with the 'owner of Samsung' as his connection to being able to obtain the cell phone that Willy Bank covets. Samsung is a huge publicly traded company and does not have an owner, but he could very well have meant the CEO. Or it could have been a simple mistake on his part. However, they clearly do not shy away from lying to Willy and his team as long as it gets them closer to their goal.
When Rusty is trying to convince Bank to make an evacuation plan, Rusty's noticeable tattoo on his left arm is missing. However, considering that disguise is one among many of the crew's tactics, theatrical makeup can be easily applied to conceal tattoos (especially since Rusty was in disguise as a seismologist already in that scene).
As Turk presses the top button to start the boring machine, there is a small metal plate slid through the slot on the bottom button. This is designed to keep the machine from accidentally starting on its own. As long as that metal plate is in place, the machine cannot start.
When the explosion goes off to loosen the cage with the diamonds to be lifted by the helicopter, that helicopter is flying close to the top of the roof when the smoke comes out, but the smoke is not affected in any way, instead of being blown away by the fan effect of the helicopter's rotor. Obviously we are seeing a helicopter model without rotors.
A person who has been bed-ridden for six months would have atrophied muscles, and would require physical therapy to walk again. Yet, Reuben gets up and walks around like it's only been a few days.
In the scene where Terry Benedict is checking himself out in front of a mirror, Danny Ocean stands behind him and asks, "You ready?" Benedict looks into the mirror, and just before he answers, "I was born ready," he fleetingly makes eye contact with the camera.
The aerial shot of Las Vegas out of Danny Ocean's aircraft
shows a square window frame. However, he and Rusty boarded a Gulfstream Jet, which has round windows.
By 2006, slot machines - especially those at McCarran Airport - had gone coinless, accepting only paper money and dispensing barcoded vouchers that can either be inserted into another machine or redeemed for cash, thereby rendering the Susan B. Anthony con moot.
Although William Bank (Al Pacino) mentions that he has a Casino Hotel in Singapore called 'The Sapphire', in 2007 there were no legal casinos in Singapore, much less an award-winning Casino Hotel.
During the scene where Danny and Rusty are speaking with Roman in his kitchen, the camera, which is filming from outside the window, zooms in and can be seen in the window's reflection.
In one part of the movie, from the air, it shows that The Bank Hotel and Casino is on the west side of Las Vegas Blvd and just south of the Excalibur Hotel. In another part, out front of The Bank after the "earthquake", it show The Bank right across the street from the Bellagio Hotel which would make it north of The Excalibur and on the east side of Las Vegas Blvd.
When the team is trying to figure out how to finance the second drill, they act as if they have no options except to go to their nemesis Terry Benedict. They never even consider their rich associate Denny Shields or the 18 other "whales" (wealthy gamblers) he and Danny are shown to have influence over during the movie.
When Virgil is altering the photos of the crew he did not need to. He could have just switched them with completely different photos to save time.
Abigail Sponder refers to the trilby hat worn by Saul (as the Five Diamond reviewer) as a "Doctor Dolittle hat". However, Doctor Dolittle (played by Rex Harrison) mostly wears a top hat. Professor Higgins, also played by Harrison, in My Fair Lady (1964) is the one who wears a trilby hat. My Fair Lady also contains a character with the surname Dolittle, which is likely what caused the confusion.
When Virgil Malloy says in Spanish "Peligroso es mi nombre medio" ("dangerous is my middle name") the translation from English makes no sense in Spanish. The correct translation should be "Peligroso es mi segundo nombre" for the phrase to have an actual meaning for hispanophones.
Willy Bank threatens Basher Tarr (acting as Fender Roads) that he can pick up the phone and have Shaun White and Travis Pastrana doing heel clickers and lazy boys (both are tricks done on a motorbike or dirt bike) off the back of the building. Tarr then refers to them as "long hairs riding rice rockets." While Travis Pastrana is a well known competitive motor sports athlete, Shaun White is a snowboarder and skateboarder and has never been known as a motor sports or biking competitor.
When watching the fireworks, Reuben is smoking a cigar and talking to Danny. Basher joins them and It might sound like he says "Elliott" with his cockney accent but he clearly says "There he is." Then Reuben gives him a cigar.
