3D: A Brief History (2004)

The "brief" in the title is certainly right as this thing runs a short 7-minutes but it gives one a pretty good idea of why Alfred Hitchcock shot DIAL M FOR MURDER in 3D. Robert Osborne starts off talking about how Hollywood was losing viewers to television so they had to come up with new things that they could only get at the movies. Joe Alves (JAWS 3) talks about what a director needs to do in order to get the images to appear if they're coming from the screen and director Peter Bogdanovich talks about the effect these movies had on people. At just 7-minutes there's certainly nothing ground-breaking here and there's no question that most will find this useless. With that said, I think the featurette does a good job at explaining the 3D craze of the 1950s and it's also honest to talk about its short-comings including the annoying glasses which would give anyone a headache. Bogdanovich talks about seeing the film in 3D a couple times and says it was a remarkable experience.
