Nifty horror comedy short

Three young friends on spring break in Northern Canada charter a boat to a remote island where folks can hunt zombies for sport. However, what initially starts out as a fun real-life video game eventually turns into a harrowing ordeal for our trio when things become too grim and hairy for them to handle. Writer/director William Whirity relates the enjoyable premise at a brisk pace, presents a vivid depiction of the spooky fog-shrouded woodland setting, milks plenty of tension and eerie gloom-doom atmosphere from the premise, and delivers a handy helping of graphic gore. Moreover, this honey deserves extra points for its wickedly amusing sense of pitch-black gallows humor, a few nice touches of bleak irony, and the uncompromising surprise bummer ending. Mark Theriault, Mike Mulcrone, and Josh Alletto all do solid and engaging work in the lead roles. Mark Borchardt of "American Movie" fame has a neat bit as a drunk in a bar. Bill Palmer's sharp cinematography gives the picture a cool bleached-out look and makes inspired use of fades, dissolves, and superimpositions. The shivery piano-driven score by the Brian Caunter Orchestra does the jumpy ooga-booga trick. Well worth a watch.
