Funny and cleverly done!
brightonxxx20 March 2010
I was quite sceptical before I watched this movie, but, I have to say, it exceeded my expectations! It is certainly funny and cleverly done!

It is a Canadian - Bollywood movie about Kavita, who is a mild-mannered, bespectacled nerd who works in a video store in Toronto. She loves Bollywood movies and she idolises Kohinoor, a Bollywood superstar. Kavita, 25, would love to go to drama school, but her mother prefers that she enter into marriage with a suitable suitor. "He has a job and a Honda Accord," Mama points out, but Kavita doesn't want to let go of her dreams.

The story is fast pacing and certainly provide you a good entertainment. Highly recommend it!

Better than expected

Silly, campy and generally crazy, Bolly Double is definitely an enjoyable movie. I noticed on IMDb that this film was originally titled Lookalike -- and I kind of wish they had kept it that way. I usually try to avoid watching any movie with the word "bolly", but in this case I am glad my girlfriend made me watch the film.

There were a few (very short) song and dance numbers that integrated well into the plot, but in general the film was more like an old Hollywood screwball comedy.

You don't need to have any prior knowledge of Hindi cinema to get the movies point. Underneath the over the top comedy and dance numbers, the film is a really a satire on the clichés of formula films -- which could apply equally as much to Hollywood movies since the 80s as it does to contemporary Bollywood.

I for one was surprised to find out that this films budget was as low as it was. There were car chases, fight sequences, songs and dances etc. First time writer/director Arun Bharali did a good job of making the most of the resources available and delivering a feel good entertaining film that provided two hours of engaging escapist fun. He also displays his skills of writing dialog that is funny, without being over-the-top. My favorite line has to be "He has a job and a Honda Accord."

The oft repeated message in the movie that it's "never too late", contributes to the general sense of feel-good sweetness, and although the movie's nothing to write home about from a technical point of view, you can tell its heart's in the right place, and good intentions do count for something after all. I'd recommend this movie to all of my friends or anyone who wants a good laugh.

Love it!
This film is campy and hilarious, just as I like them. For a low budget film, they did an amazing job capturing the decadence and vibrancy of the genre, but without taking themselves too seriously. The film is genuine and honest, and a ton of fun. And who doesn't love a Cinderella story? Very self-aware, you can tell the entire cast had as good a time making it as I did watching it. If you are looking for a film for crazy special effects, shocking twists and an all-star cast, go elsewhere. But if you are looking for an enjoyable viewing experience, you have come to the right place! I would definitely watch it again and recommend it to my friends.

(and the leading lady is absolutely gorgeous, in both roles.)

Fun Fabulous Film
Varushka3 March 2009
This film rocked. I watched it the other day and I was pleasantly surprised by how charming, sincere and sweet this film was. The beautiful actresses, Sitara Hewitt and Koel Purie did a really good job in this film with their comic performances and the first time director Arun Bharali did a good job making this movie entertaining with its funny dialogues and characters. It was a comical interpretation of Bollywood Movies with some really great scenes. I am looking forward to seeing more of Arun Bharali's movies in the future. I have very rarely been entertained by movies in the past, but Bolly Doubles along with American Pie, There is Something About Mary, Zoolander and Borat are movies which have left me feeling really good, and given me lots of laughter. After watching Bolly Doubles I am very much interested in watching more Bollywood movies and am eagerly waiting for Arun Bharali's next movie!

One of the funniest movies ever!
Xarian20 August 2008
A charming, humorous movie, with a lot of colorful memorable characters and funny dialogues and quite a few hilarious scenes. An uplifting light hearted comedy which will guaranteed bring a smile on your face and transport you to a world of laughter. This movie is a fantastic fusion of Hollywood and Bollywood. A spicy mix of drama, thrills, romance, and comedy all in one entertaining movie. If you are looking for a good laugh and an introduction to what a Bollywood movie is all about, Bolly Double is the movie which is perfect for you. I hope there will be a sequel to this movie as I would love to see it. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of this movie, and it left us wanting more. Definitely one of the most funniest movies in my DVD library.

Campy Film
mbrand1997112 January 2013
I was working as a film extra doing it which I played a policeman just writing a report on the brawl and it was quite good being almost close to the action. It was the best film I got involved and yes it was low budget but it was still fun. That was seven years ago and I hadn't seen the film yet. Hopefully I get a chance to see it one day. This was in 2005 when it was made and it was a day & night session and the best part of it was the police station scene where you can see everything happening on camera. This was super cool and perhaps the only time I'll ever get to witness it. It's been seven years and I hadn't yet seen the picture but I hope if everyone is reading this I like a copy of it.

Charming film by Arun Bhirali
matthew-872839 February 2024
This is a charming and highly entertaining directorial debut, shot on an incredibly low budget by a great team, directed by the brilliant Arun (Petrichor) Bhirali. Arun Bhirali was a superb musician (violinist and pianist) and composer, who studied composition with Brian Ferneyhough in California before deciding to change career path. Because of his immense creativity and drive, he managed to forge a burgeoning career as a talented and imaginative film-maker but tragically he fell prey to depression and alcoholism and died in 2017. Arun's is a tragic tale of how wonderfully gifted creative people can become overwhelmed by the pressures and challenges of life. There ought be more discussion about these issues within the film industry/
