They Must Have Run Out Of Lions
Paul Bertho, having no lions to hand, is a street vendor, selling umbrellas. He is making a sales to a gentleman, demonstrating how easily they open. When they refuse to close, however, the customer walks away. Gavroche will not be deterred from making the sale!
It's either that or dealing with lions, I suppose. Berthos made at least five short comedies in 1912 involving lions, and it looks like he and director Romeo Bosetti had decided to give that particular genre of short comedy a rest. Instead, we get a special-effects comedy with quite a decent capper gag.
It's not a particularly sophisticated comedy for 1913. By this point, Mack Sennett's Keystone farces were penetrating the European market. Still, the Europeans continued to produce slapstick shorts far more violent than the Americans for several years.
