Jim Carrey's career has taken some interesting turns over the years. After becoming a box-office juggernaut in the mid-1990s with the blazing blockbuster streak of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Mask," "Dumb and Dumber," "Batman Forever," and "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," he found the ditch with the commercial and critical wipeout of Ben Stiller's darkly comedic curveball "The Cable Guy." The thoughtful actor reestablished his commercial connection with mainstream moviegoers the following year with "Liar Liar," then took another risk with Peter Weir's "The Truman Show." The result was one of the best films of 1998, one that received a curious smattering of Oscar nominations for Weir (Director), Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), and Original Screenplay (Andrew Niccol). I am of that age that still thinks the 80s was 30 years ago and that the 90s just happened. Strange as that logic is, there’s nothing like movie anniversaries to pull me back into reality. Last episode we looked at In the Mouth of Madness and its impact now going strong 30 years later. That flick though, like most of John Carpenter’s catalogue, was something that was already out when I started my movie journey. I had already seen it on VHS and on TV from time to time which puts it in another category altogether. Move ahead just 5 short years to 1999, one of the greatest years in cinema history, and we start getting that 25 years of existence that puts that nice existential crisis right into my gut. Today we are going to look at one of those movies that probably isn’t considered a traditional horror movie but is absolutely horrific in nature.

Oscar winner Troy Kotsur is set to appear in Season 12 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” at HBO in a guest starring role, Variety has learned exclusively.
According to an individual with knowledge of the series, Kotsur will appear as himself in one episode as a member of Larry David’s golf club.
Kotsur is best known for his role in the film “Coda,” in which he played Frank Rossi. Kotsur won the Academy Award for best supporting actor his work in the film, with “Coda” also winning the awards for best picture and best adapted screenplay. Kotsur’s other recent credits include appearing as a Tusken Raider in “The Mandalorian” while also helping to create the Tuskens’ sign language used in fellow “Star Wars” series “The Book of Boba Fett.” He has also appeared in shows like “Criminal Minds” and “Scrubs” as well as films like “The Number 23.”

Disney+ is developing a series based on the football team from the California School for the Deaf Riverside (Csdr) with Troy Kotsur attached to play the team’s coach, Variety has learned.
ABC Signature has partnered with Csdr, their football program, and the the California Department of Education to develop the untitled series for Disney+. The show will tell the true story of the Csdr Cubs’ 2021 football season, when the team went undefeated and got all the way to the California State Championship.
The series will portray the students, teachers, and their families. The writing and production team, both in front of and behind the cameras, will include artists from the Deaf community.
Ron Shelton is attached to write and direct the pilot as well as executive produce, with Ben Shelton also set to write and executive produce. Kotsur will executive produce in addition to starring. Kevin Falls will serve as showrunner and executive producer.

Like most people these days, the rising London rapper Central Cee is having trouble keeping track of time. His debut mixtape, Wild West, dropped just over a year ago, but the 23-year-old Mc says he feels like he’s been living the life of an internationally known artist for much longer. “It’s like I’m lost in time,” he explains over Zoom. “I wrote something on Insta, I thought something was two years ago. It’s been a while since we last had a Paranormal Activity released to help usher in the Halloween season (six years to be exact), but William Eubanks’ Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin officially arrives on Paramount Plus this weekend, and the script from Christopher Landon does an admirable job of finding new narrative terrain to traverse for this latest entry in the series that genuinely made me excited as a long-time Paranormal Activity fan. Next of Kin doesn’t necessarily follow the tried and true formula that established Paranormal Activity as this huge moment in modern pop culture, but I think breaking out of that mold here is what helps make this latest Pa film stand out a bit, as this new direction breathes some much needed new life into the franchise as a whole, and makes me eager for another film in the future if Next of Kin does well enough.

Well, that was a punch to the gut!
I knew that both Kat and Deputy Chief Garland were slated to leave, but it still hurt.
Law & Order: Svu Season 23 Episode 2 was making a point about the difficulty of standing up to the ultra-powerful. But was the sacrifice of both these characters worth it?
I was never Kat's biggest fan. She could be impulsive and had a tendency to get carried away by passion and accuse more veteran members of Svu of not caring enough when a case slipped through their fingers because of evidentiary problems or political concerns.
But as her final hour with Svu began, she seemed far more toned down. She struggled to pressure a witness but seemed far more a part of the team than she ever had before.
And when she was shot, tears sprang to my eyes at the idea that she...

Exclusive: Homecoming star Stephan James has been tapped as the male lead in Beacon 23, Spectrum Originals and AMC Networks’ psychological thriller series based on the book by Hugh Howey.
The series is produced by Boat Rocker Studios and Spectrum Originals. James will exec produce alongside his co-star Lena Headey, who will also executive produce through her production company, Peephole Productions, as part of her first-look deal Boat Rocker Studios.
James will play the keeper of Beacon 23, a man living in complete solitude at the edge of the universe, a condition that is eating away at his sanity. Plagued by the scars and secrets of the past, he is thrown into a tense conflict with a woman bearing secrets as deep as his own.
Created by Zak Penn, the suspenseful thriller follows two people, whose fates become entangled after they find themselves trapped together at the end of the known universe.

Dan Kneece, the veteran camera operator and Steadicam expert who worked on films including David Lynch’s Blue Velvet, Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown and Roland Emmerich’s The Patriot, has died. He was 64.
Kneece had heart trouble and died Saturday in his Venice home, where he was found by his longtime friend and first assistant cameraman Steven Mann during a “wellness check,” Mann told The Hollywood Reporter.

After last year’s all-star edition, “Big Brother” 23 is packed with first-time contenders. Which of these houseguests do you want to see go all the way and win? This year marks the first time that the first-place finisher will pocket $750,000; in each of the 22 seasons to date, the winner went home with half a million bucks.
For the first time in more than a decade, the 16 houseguests have been divided up into teams with each of them led by a captain who won a competition. The director and former Disney creative executive Singer said the agreement marks the first time since the pandemic that the nation’s second largest chain has supported an independent horror release.
“As the country comes out of the pandemic, we can all use an escape from reality, and nothing does that quite like the movies. We’re thrilled that Regal will be distributing 6:45, giving [it] widest possible audience,” said Singer.

“The Masked Singer” finale on May 26 will be a battle between the three celebrities who are disguised as the Black Swan, Chameleon and Piglet. Of this trio of talent, the most entertaining is the contestant hidden inside the Chameleon costume. Early on in the season finale of Sunday night’s (May 23) episode of “American Idol,” judge Luke Bryan informed fellow country singer Chayce Beckham he earned the ultimate prize: a chance for the two of them to go fishing.
“Win or lose, we’re going bass fishing,” Bryan said.
Those plans are now on hold, as the 24-year old Apple Valley, California resident was crowned the show’s 2021 victor.
“Your world is about to change,” judge Katy Perry told the now former forklift driver, who’ll release music via BMG and is Nashville bound.
