Jim Carrey in The Number 23 (2007)

News

The Number 23

One of the Best Jim Carrey Movies on Netflix Earned Him Close to $50M Despite Opting Out of a Salary
Image
In the ‘90s, there was no bigger comedy star than Jim Carrey. While the In Living Color actor was a relative unknown when he was signed on for films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the runaway success of the mystery comedy made him a star like no other. In the same year, he delivered two more hits and became the biggest name in Hollywood.

While he lost some of his success with experiments like The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, a good old comedy reportedly brought him back to the top as its box office success netted him a higher payday than a lot of his other films. The actor was reportedly not paid a salary for the 2008 comedy Yes Man, which was consistently in Netflix’s top 10 list in the UK.

Jim Carrey was not paid a salary for Yes Man, but still earned close to $50 million...

Jim Carrey’s Best Non-Comedic Role? Fans Celebrate His Performance In ‘The Number 23’ 18 Years Later
Image
Fans celebrate Jim Carrey’s performance in The Number 23 (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Jim Carrey’s dive into psychological thrillers may not have been met with universal acclaim, but 18 years after its release, ‘The Number 23’ still has fans talking.

The film, released on February 23, 2007, was directed by Joel Schumacher and starred Carrey alongside Virginia Madsen and Danny Huston. Critics have largely dismissed it, giving it a dismal Rotten Tomatoes score, but a growing number of viewers have embraced it as a cult favorite.

Jim Carrey’s The Number 23: A Forgotten Jem or Just a Guilty Pleasure

Though often overlooked in discussions of Carrey’s best work, some fans argue that ‘The Number 23’ showcases one of his finest dramatic performances, second only to his role in ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.’

Jim Carrey Could Have Starred In One Of Mel Gibson's Biggest Flops
Image
Jim Carrey's career has taken some interesting turns over the years. After becoming a box-office juggernaut in the mid-1990s with the blazing blockbuster streak of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Mask," "Dumb and Dumber," "Batman Forever," and "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," he found the ditch with the commercial and critical wipeout of Ben Stiller's darkly comedic curveball "The Cable Guy." The thoughtful actor reestablished his commercial connection with mainstream moviegoers the following year with "Liar Liar," then took another risk with Peter Weir's "The Truman Show." The result was one of the best films of 1998, one that received a curious smattering of Oscar nominations for Weir (Director), Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), and Original Screenplay (Andrew Niccol). That a film as acclaimed and successful as "The Truman Show" could be denied Best Picture and Best Actor nods in a weak year felt like a rebuke of its star.

Troy Kotsur To Lead Cast Of Johannes Roberts Horror Feature ‘Primate’ From Walter Hamada
Image
Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has greenlit the Johannes Roberts horror film Primate, with Oscar winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) set to lead the cast. Roberts will direct the Walter Hamada-produced feature, which Roberts co-wrote with Ernest Riera.

Plot details are being kept under wraps.

The project falls under Hamada’s exclusive first-look deal with Paramount which began January 1, 2023, making him “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.”

The former DC Films boss steered DC to its highest-grossing movie Aquaman with $1.1 billion worldwide. He was also behind The Conjuring franchise, the highest-grossing horror series ever with more than $2 billion in global box office, 2017’s It and Matt Reeves’ The Batman, to name a few.

Hamada is producing via his 18hz production company alongside Bradley Pilz and John Hodges. Up next, Paramount and Hamada are...

Matthew Broderick Shares Sad Reflection on Jim Carrey's Panned Performance in The Cable Guy
Image
The Cable Guy, despite featuring notable stars, was a critical failure compared to Jim Carrey's previous hits. Matthew Broderick and Judd Apatow defend Carrey's performance in the film, noting the pressure he faced due to his hefty salary. Carrey unexpectedly reprised his role in 2022 for a Super Bowl ad.

The Cable Guy was released in 1996 on the back of three huge Jim Carrey hits that seemed to suggest he could do no wrong. However, unlike Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb & Dumber, The Cable Guy was a critical failure and only a borderline box office success in comparison, and marked one of the first real low-points in the actors career since he came to the attention of Hollywood. During a recent appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival, Carreys co-star Matthew Broderick and the movies producer Judd Apatow shared their memories of the film and its original status as a failure.

Honkai Star Rail 2.3 Character Banners - Phase 1 & 2 Banners Leaked
Image
Honkai: Star Rail 2.3 will allegedly feature Firefly, Jade, Ruan Mei, and Argenti as 5-star units, creating a tough choice for players. Firefly may specialize in damage and transformation, while Ruan Mei supports with buffs and debuffs in Honkai: Star Rail. Jade may focus on follow-up attacks as a sub-dps, while Argenti excels in dealing damage against multiple targets.

The Phase 1 and Phase 2 character banners for Honkai: Star Rail 2.3 have allegedly leaked, indicating what players may expect from the two periods in the update and hinting at what may end up being a very difficult choice. Version 2.3 is the next patch in the turn-based RPGs schedule and it will continue adding content, including new playable characters. The games next destination is likely still several months away, as the main story quests in Penacony have just ended with the release of Version 2.2, the same patch that added Robin and Boothill in Honkai: Star Rail.

8mm (1999) – The Test of Time
Image
I am of that age that still thinks the 80s was 30 years ago and that the 90s just happened. Strange as that logic is, there’s nothing like movie anniversaries to pull me back into reality. Last episode we looked at In the Mouth of Madness and its impact now going strong 30 years later. That flick though, like most of John Carpenter’s catalogue, was something that was already out when I started my movie journey. I had already seen it on VHS and on TV from time to time which puts it in another category altogether. Move ahead just 5 short years to 1999, one of the greatest years in cinema history, and we start getting that 25 years of existence that puts that nice existential crisis right into my gut. Today we are going to look at one of those movies that probably isn’t considered a traditional horror movie but is absolutely horrific in nature.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Will Bring Jim Carrey Back As Dr. Robotnik
Image
If you’re a child of the ‘90s, you grew up on great Jim Carrey performances. And while he seemed to lose his way for a while on the family entertainment front, he’s since made a return to the kind of elastic elation he found in those early years in – of all things – the Sonic The Hedgehog movies. In the recent cinematic out, and its sequel, Carrey stepped into the role of the villainous Dr. Robotnik with gleeful aplomb. But in April 2022, he seemed to announce his retirement in an interview with Access Hollywood – throwing doubt on whether he’d return as Robotnik for Sonic 3.

Well, good news for Sonic fans and Carrey heads: he’ll be back in that big moustache later this year when Sonic The Hedgehog 3 hits cinemas. A fresh teaser for the threequel showed an explosive title treatment for the film, soundtracked by Carrey...

SAG Awards nominee profile: Troy Kotsur (‘Coda’) could make history for deaf actors with multiple wins
Image
Troy Kotsur is already a trailblazer as the first deaf actor to score an individual nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, but he could make even more history. For his acclaimed work in the Apple TV+ film “Coda,” the 53-year-old actor earned two SAG nominations, one in supporting actor and the other in ensemble. This puts Kotsur in a unique position that no deaf actor has experienced before, with possible wins in both categories.

Kotsur faces some tough competition in his individual contest, including some A-list names. The only other first-time nominee of the group is Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”), who has largely swept the critic awards for his performance. The two rookies will face three previous SAG Award winners, including Ben Affleck (“The Tender Bar”), who scored his first individual bid after winning the top ensemble award twice for 1998’s “Shakespeare in Love” and 2012’s “Argo,...

‘Something in the Dirt’ Review: Two Burnouts Lose their Minds in a Covid-Era Conspiracy Satire
Image
Doomed bromances fuel the mind-bending genre outings of filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Their body of work to date points to a predilection for the dynamics of fraternal male relationships under strenuous, supernatural circumstances — whether it’s a bond strengthened over years or a fresh spark of camaraderie.

In their 2012 feature debut, “Resolution,” a man attempts to cure his best friend’s addiction as a series of bizarre occurrences begin to torment them. Five years later in “The Endless,” Benson and Moorhead played brothers caught in the grasp of an alien-worshipping cult. And for 2019’s “Synchronic,” they cast Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan as close paramedic pals who come across a drug that permits time travel. Within their unsettling brainchildren, the emotional tribulations that the events put the friendships through are dramatically vital.

“Something in the Dirt” is the duo’s latest look into the paranormal, and it...

Henry Cavill at an event for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)
Even as Henry Cavill prepares to swing into battle in a blond wig for "The Witcher" season 2, he's still got a soft spot for another of his heroic characters: Superman. Cavill has said he'd still love to return as Clark Kent, but he's also supportive of seeing other versions of the character -- including a Black Superman.

There are actually two Black Superman projects currently in development. One is a movie, produced by J.J. Abrams' company Bad Robot and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which will be about Calvin Ellis, a character introduced in DC Comics as the Superman of Earth-23. The other...

Review: Paranormal Activity: Next Of Kin Successfully Breathes New Life Into the Franchise
Image
It’s been a while since we last had a Paranormal Activity released to help usher in the Halloween season (six years to be exact), but William Eubanks’ Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin officially arrives on Paramount Plus this weekend, and the script from Christopher Landon does an admirable job of finding new narrative terrain to traverse for this latest entry in the series that genuinely made me excited as a long-time Paranormal Activity fan. Next of Kin doesn’t necessarily follow the tried and true formula that established Paranormal Activity as this huge moment in modern pop culture, but I think breaking out of that mold here is what helps make this latest Pa film stand out a bit, as this new direction breathes some much needed new life into the franchise as a whole, and makes me eager for another film in the future if Next of Kin does well enough.

Law & Order: Svu Season 23 Episode 2 Review: Never Turn Your Back On Them
Tony Goldwyn, Maura Tierney, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Mehcad Brooks, and Odelya Halevi in Law & Order (1990)
Well, that was a punch to the gut!

I knew that both Kat and Deputy Chief Garland were slated to leave, but it still hurt.

Law & Order: Svu Season 23 Episode 2 was making a point about the difficulty of standing up to the ultra-powerful. But was the sacrifice of both these characters worth it?

I was never Kat's biggest fan. She could be impulsive and had a tendency to get carried away by passion and accuse more veteran members of Svu of not caring enough when a case slipped through their fingers because of evidentiary problems or political concerns.

But as her final hour with Svu began, she seemed far more toned down. She struggled to pressure a witness but seemed far more a part of the team than she ever had before.

And when she was shot, tears sprang to my eyes at the idea that she...

Image
Whitney Williams was royally flushed out of the “Big Brother” house on Thursday’s live eviction episode. The 30-year-old makeup artist from Oregon fought to the end, but was ultimately sent packing by a vote of 10-0 over her Aces teammate Hannah Chaddha. So where did Whitney’s game go wrong?

Country Singer Chayce Beckham Wins ‘American Idol,’ Is Nashville Bound
Image
Early on in the season finale of Sunday night’s (May 23) episode of “American Idol,” judge Luke Bryan informed fellow country singer Chayce Beckham he earned the ultimate prize: a chance for the two of them to go fishing.

“Win or lose, we’re going bass fishing,” Bryan said.

Those plans are now on hold, as the 24-year old Apple Valley, California resident was crowned the show’s 2021 victor.

“Your world is about to change,” judge Katy Perry told the now former forklift driver, who’ll release music via BMG and is Nashville bound.

Beckham was an early favorite in auditions after wowing the judges with a performance of ‘What Brings Life Also Kills” by Kolton Moore and the Clever Few, prompting Perry to remark he sounded like “the heart of America.”

Throughout the competition, Bryan repeatedly emphasized how “cool” Beckham was on stage, at one point going so far...
