MangaDex Hit With Massive DMCA Takedown; Fans Demand Better Access To Manga From Japanese Publishers

MangaDex, the popular online repository for fan-translated manga, has been subjected to a sweeping wave of DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown notices throughout May, leading to the removal of thousands of chapters across an estimated 700 manga titles.
The actions, initiated by a consortium of Japanese and Korean publishers, have been described by a site moderator to MangaAlerts as the first time a takedown happened on this scale.
While an official comprehensive list is not yet available, titles compiled by fans and reported to be affected include well-known works such as 20th Century Boys, Akira, Azumanga Daioh, Claymore, Dragon Ball (and related content), Frieren, Golden Kamuy, Hajime No Ippo, JoJolion, Jujutsu Kaisen, Kaiji, Kuroko no Basket, Mushishi, Nana, One Piece, Oyasumi Punpun, Solo Leveling, Spy x Family, The Apothecary Diaries (both series), and Vinland Saga, among hundreds of others.

The Rocky universe might be expanding again, as Michael B. Jordan, who led the first spin-off trilogy, Creed, is working on a new TV show set in the same universe. Despite some bumps along the road, the Rocky franchise is the undisputed heavyweight champ of boxing movie franchises. Creed reignited passion in the franchise when it was released in 2015. The new spin-off will follow a similar path, potentially moving away from Rocky Balboa and Adonis Creed to follow the next generation of boxers.
The Hollywood Reporter threw the overhand right by revealing that Delphi, a new TV series set within the Creed and Rocky universe, is currently in development. Michael B. Jordan will serve as an executive producer on the new show. It hasn't been confirmed whether he will reprise his role as Adonis Creed in the series. Marco Ramirez will serve as showrunner on Delphi. During the filming of Rocky IV, Sylvester Stallone’s commitment to authenticity nearly cost him more than just a few bruises. In an effort to make the fight scene with Dolph Lundgren (who played Ivan Drago) as realistic as possible, Stallone instructed his co-star to land some genuine punches. One of them landed Stallone straight to a nine-day stay in the intensive care unit.
Recently, he made headlines alongside his daughters and cameoed as a guest on Logan Paul’s popular Impaulsive podcast. There, he opened up about his admiration for professional wrestling, acknowledging just how physically and mentally demanding the sport really is.

Viewers often find it quite amusing whenever a popular series features characters that are inspired by real-life personalities. And by no surprise, one of the most highly acclaimed sports anime, Hajime no Ippo, also draws inspiration from a few notable boxers you might have already heard of.
Out of all the characters the series has, Sendo Takeshi’s character is particularly noteworthy, but not because of the obvious reasons. Surely, he does show a great amount of resilience throughout the series and is one of the most well-written characters overall, but there’s something more that makes his character exceptionally iconic.

Fans are convinced that his character pays a subtle yet unmistakable homage to the renowned American actor and filmmaker Sylvester Stallone, specifically his iconic portrayal of Rocky Marciano from the 2006 movie, Rocky Balboa!

Anime has become such a global phenomenon and an artistic style of its own that its influence — both in visuals and writing — can be felt in major Hollywood films. What's more, some of the most popular and respected filmmakers and actors in the industry produced these films. From sly nods to massive tributes, these Hollywood films made sure that audiences around the world knew how much they owed to anime's creative spirit.
It should be noted that these films wore their anime influences proudly on their sleeves, unlike the oft-cited Black Swan and Inception. In the latter's case, directors Darren Aronofsky and Christopher Nolan denied any overt or subtle similarities between their films to certain anime. Respectively, the late great Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue and Paprika.

Over the past 50 years, there's been no shortage of excellent action anime for people to watch. These iconic titles have stood the test of time in several ways. They are known for the great animation, choreography, and fight scenes on display. A fantastic fight from a currently airing anime feels like nothing compared to the astounding quality these titles maintain.
The best action anime are usually the most consistent. Fight scenes may be one thing, but without an interesting story or characters to back them up, they don't hit nearly as hard. Fortunately, these examples provide plenty of substance to balance their impressive style. It's unclear what the anime landscape would look like now without these series.

An epic tale of personal vengeance, a quest of light-hearted adventure, a struggle to save a ruined world — these plots, and more, populate the world of martial arts anime. With fist-pounding, senses-shattering action at the heart of any good martial arts story, solid martial arts anime needs to balance the popcorn entertainment with a story that’s as strong as its heroes. Action for action’s sake is fine, but it’s even better when there’s a heart beating behind it all.
There are countless martial arts and kung-fu anime out in the wild, and it can be tough to figure out what to watch. The best kung-fu anime are considered the most exceptional for their impact on the genre, their faithfulness to their source material, or their sheer entertainment value. In the last few decades, Attack on Titan has been among the more decent titles that have minimal to no fan service at all. There are some graphic and gory scenes during fight sequences, but nothing outrageous enough to attract the wrath of the censor board. However, that rule or sentiment doesn’t seem to be uniform across the board.

In recent times, anime with the flashiest animation has taken the biggest priority. Demon Slayer is the biggest example of the phenomenon. Even though its plot isn’t revolutionary, it still conquered the world because of its animation techniques. Frieren, on the other hand, is a series unlike anything else in the current anime environment.
It does have action sequences and beautifully animated ones at that. But it does not rely on them entirely. In fact, some of the most impactful scenes of the anime come from sequences that are simple. So, is it really necessary to depend on flamboyant animation and over-the-top action scenes to prove an anime’s worth?
One of the best scenes in Frieren forsook extravagant animation

Part-time jobs aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and Hajime Isayama is no exception. The mangaka is known for his magnum opus Attack on Titan, which made waves in the shonen genre. From characters to themes, it stands as a novelty, but the reason behind creating the series would shock most fans.

The storytelling in Attack on Titan was always engaging and only got better with time. The same is true for Hajime Isayama’s art style except for the fact that visually, the manga started on a rough note. The art was often a topic of discussion among fans for how rough and unpolished it was.

As the story progressed, the mangaka continued to get better at his craft. It seems like the credit for this improvement should go to Attack on Titan’s editor as he made Isayama read some particular manga.
This includes one of the most iconic boxing manga and something extremely different from the intense narrative of Aot. While the former might be an easy guess, the latter comes as a complete surprise. So, here’s what Isayama’s training for Attack on Titan looked like.

Other than being an iconic ninja story, Naruto is among the Big 3 of Shonen Jump. It lives up to the status in most aspects, be it storyline and characters. The series may have ended but it branched out into sequels and spinoffs. That doesn’t, however, mask the problems it faced with the publishers.

As anime continues to grow in popularity, the demand and increase in shows also go up, creating countless series for fans to watch. However, with so much anime available, many long-running programs have yet to end, whether other anime replace them or seasons take too long to produce. Sometimes, the powers that be even cancel unfinished shows, leaving popular works halfway through, such as Hajime no Ippo and Land of the Lustrous.

Almost four decades ago Eiichiro Oda’s manga made waves in the shonen genre. Over the years, the franchise has grown significantly and holds cult popularity with millions of readers and viewers worldwide.

Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplain’s Journey is enjoying some unexpected awards season chatter, but earlier this year, the documentary couldn’t even secure a slot at Sundance — or any of the usual high-profile festivals.
“I think we submitted the film to 30 film festivals, and all of them said, ‘No,’” reveals Fighting Spirit’s writer, director and producer, Rich Hull. “The one exception was the Newport Beach Film Festival, which allowed us to show an unfinished cut of the movie as an early preview.”
Since then, the documentary — an examination of military chaplains who’ve been a guiding light for American soldiers battling enemies and complicated emotions on the frontlines — has received a groundswell of support from a pair of famous friends, as well as the United States Army, and some good, old-fashioned community word of mouth.

Dragon Ball has been at a curious turning point after its decision to pivot back to a hunt for the Dragon Balls. Goku is used to feuding with Emperor Pilaf and his deluded minions when it comes to Dragon Ball supremacy, but the Red Ribbon Army continues to prove that they won’t be disposed of as easily. Dragon Ball Episode 33, “The Legend of a Dragon,” delivers more dangerous Dragon Ball hijinks, but these standard theatrics are couched in a broader attempt to expand the anime’s scope.
Dragon Ball Episode 33 is full of monkey mayhem and villainous grandstanding, but it also gives some greater context to the Dragon Balls themselves, why they’re so coveted, and how they came to be. “The Legend of a Dragon” doesn’t necessarily stick the landing in this regard and there are many unnecessary nuisances that surround its central tall tale. One of the most controversial yet influential figures in the history of boxing, Mike Tyson has recently made a grand return to the boxing ring after almost 4 years. However, aside from the intense match against Jake Paul, Tyson’s particular habit from this match has garnered significant attention from fans: biting his thumb most of the time. While Tyson might have dismissed it claiming it as a random quirk, anime fans, or more specifically fans of Hajime no Ippo can’t.

This random habit of Mike Tyson connects him with the classic boxing-themed manga series by George Morikawa: Hajime no Ippo. Further strengthening Tyson’s legacy, it also showcases how real-life sports icons can inspire fictional characters and techniques.

The mediatic fight of Paul vs. Tyson streamed on Netflix on November 15 marked Tyson's return after 4 years out of the ring and his first official fight in 19 years. Although after a proficient start, the years took their toll on the former champion losing steam over the YouTuber Jake Paul, who is still in his prime, one of the most notable things during the match that many viewers couldnt help but wonder about is why Mike Tyson was biting his thumbs during a great portion of the fight.
Despite Mike Tyson revealing the reason behind this habit of his in an after-match interview, classic anime lovers may know this strange quirk of the former world heavyweight champion was already explained more than two decades ago in the legendary sports anime Hajime no Ippo, also known as Fighting Spirit.

Few recent American animated series have captured the spirit of anime quite like Invincible Fight Girl, the new adult swim animated series by Juston Gordon-Montgomery. One of the most popular demographics in anime and manga, shonen has been responsible for some of the mediums greatest hits for many decades. Originally regarded as a manga category that targets young males as its primary demographic and caters to their interests, shonen has long transformed into a broad and diverse genre enjoyed by all ages and genders. Most of the genres classics, from action-adventure epics like One Piece to sports dramas like Hajime no Ippo, are regarded as some of animes best, most inspiring tales.
Even when anime skyrocketed in popularity internationally, shonen remained the mediums leading genre, with many of its hits from the past few decades, such as Attack on Titan and Noragami, already earning the status of modern classics. Yet, the newest generation of shonen anime might be one of the most prolific and multifaceted in the genres history.

Tommy Oliver made his Power Rangers debut in 1993, but the best version of the original Green Ranger would only show up more than a decade later. The Power Rangers series has featured countless actors since its inception over 30 years ago, all of whom contributed to creating the franchise as we know it. The idea of legacy is very important in Power Rangers, especially when it comes to the original Mighty Morphin actors. That said, its difficult to argue against Tommy being the shows most iconic character.
As an evil Ranger with the coolest toys and his own theme song, the original Green Ranger effortlessly became Mighty Morphin Power Rangers most popular character and changed the trajectory of the show. Even when the Green Ranger was written out of the story to match Power Rangers Super Sentai counterpart, Tommy remained on the show and became even more important to the series as the White Ranger.

The process of turning a manga into an anime is always coupled with risks. First, the creator of said manga themselves should talk to the company, oversee the script, the production quality and then approve the adaptation. Second, the success of the adaptation depends on how fans receive it. If it’s up to their expectations, then the anime will perform decently in terms of revenue. If it exceeds their expectations, then the anime will be remembered beyond one season.
It’s even trickier for production companies to adapt longer shows. Believe it or not, the anime adaptation of the famous boxing series Hajime No Ippo didn’t have a great start. And that’s because the author had serious problems with it.

A good manga series, like Netflix's Hajime no Ippo, continues to impact, influence, and entertain readers indefinitely long after its heyday has passed. After its debut, Hajime no Ippo was widely viewed as one of the best martial arts/combat sports manga of its time. Incredibly, even today, Hajime no Ippo remains a top choice for anyone interested in a well-crafted, technically sound, and emotionally resonant fight story.
The world first heard of George Morikawa's Hajime no Ippo in a 1989 issue of Weekly Shnen Jump. Since that debut some 35 years ago, Morikawa has continuously been adding and updating chapters and content to the story. As a result, Hajime no Ippo is one of the longest-running manga in the history of the medium. The story details the adventures of shy teenager Makunouchi Ippo, who, due to his lack of friends, is an easy target for school bullies who see...

Training arcs are understandably looked upon with skepticism whenever they occur in shonen anime just because the demographic has a tendency of over relying on them to explain how a hero gets exponentially stronger than a more powerful opponent. However, the Viral Hit anime is showing how it can be done, and the series isn't even a shonen, let alone Japanese. It's a manhwa. Incredibly, the series even has the protagonist, Hobin undergo even more training than shonen series that are considered to be the worst offenders in this regard, and Viral Hit's whole premise actually justifies this higher amount.
Hobin is actually quite weak and even referred to as a "normal" person as opposed to an actual fighter. The reason why Hobin must constantly train is that he's in a unique situation where he can quickly earn a good deal of money by fighting bullies that then get streamed...

The Dragon Ball manga is revered for its simple narrative and detailed illustrations. Even before Dragon Ball was serialized on Weekly Shonen Jump, series creator Akira Toriyama was already hailed as the “embodiment of illustrative sense” during the running of Dr. Slump.
That series already made Toriyama a multi-millionaire. In fact, Monster and 20th Century Boys author Naoki Urasawa read Dr. Slump and thought, “This might be the guy to raise manga to the next level.” Even Astro Boy creator Osamu Tezuka referred to Toriyama as his “heir apparent.”

Even so, Toriyama admitted that there were still some skills that were out of his reach and he was shocked that a certain mangaka was able to do it. And that is the creator of Slam Dunk, Takehiko Inoue.
