Mark Burnham in Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Franchise May Be Revving Up for New Installments Soon
Mark Burnham in Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
It’s now been three years since Netflix premiered Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a “legacy sequel” to Tobe Hooper’s original horror classic that arrived on February 18, 2022. Now, fresh rumors have begun to swirl that the franchise may be revving back to life for a new installment.

Deadline reports today that studios are knocking at Verve’s door; the agency has repped the rights for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series since 2017. While nothing has been officially set in motion just yet, the names showing interest in the IP have us intrigued.

The outlet reveals that Strange Darling filmmaker Jt Mollner and producer Roy Lee are at the forefront of the conversation around reviving the franchise, with in-demand actor Glen Powell, star of the upcoming Running Man reboot, interested in reading Mollner’s script for a possible star vehicle and producing role. Lionsgate and A24 are also reportedly said to be eyeing the IP for new features.

Beyond ‘Heart Eyes’ – The Perfect Valentine’s Day Horror Movies to Watch This Year
Image
‘Heart Eyes’ continues horror’s successful tradition of terrifying tales and extreme slashers that take advantage of the year’s most romantic holiday.

Holidays can be a wonderful time of unity where friends, family, and loved ones come together, whether they subscribe to the entrenched tropes of these seasonal customs or have created their own. Holiday horror films have become one of the genre’s most cathartic traditions. This subversive brand of horror started to find its footing during the ’70s through movies like Silent Night, Bloody Night, Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?, and of course — Black Christmas and Halloween.

The tongue-in-cheek nature of Christmas horror movies have helped make these the most popular holiday horror sub-genre. There are close to 100 Christmas horror movies, but this hasn’t stopped other holidays, like Thanksgiving, April Fool’s Day, and even Independence Day, from also leaving their mark on the horror genre.

Monster season 3 release window confirmed quietly via Netflix news brief
Image
When renewing Monster for a third season last October, Netflix’s official release did not include any mention of when the next season would arrive which made many fans think there could again be a two-year gap between seasons; however, it seems that will not be the case.

In a letter to its shareholders released on Jan. 21, Netflix included many forward-looking statements including a look at the year ahead in which they promised to deliver an amazing slate for members. The letter not only touted many previously confirmed titles coming this year including new seasons of Wednesday, Stranger Things, Squid Game, and You, but also confirmed the next installment of Ryan Murphy’s Monster is also among the shows set to be released in 2025.

That’s right, Monster season 3 is slated to be released in 2025!

So why is this so surprising? Well, the first two seasons of Netflix’s Emmy-winning...

Bill Moseley and Skeet Ulrich Joining ‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ Game! [Trailer]
Knock Knock (2007)
Gun Interactive’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is getting a massive new update for the holidays, with IGN revealing a new Map, new Survivor, and new Family member coming soon.

On December 12, horror icon – and Chainsaw franchise star – Bill Moseley joins the game as Family member Bones, with Scream icon Skeet Ulrich as a Survivor named Wyatt!

Like Barbara Crampton, who previously joined the video game, Skeet Ulrich has never actually appeared in a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, but Scream fans are sure to love playing as a survivor featuring his likeness and voice. But it’s Bill Moseley’s introduction into the game that’s the real treat for horror fans, as Moseley of course played Chop Top in Tobe Hooper’s sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, and later popped up for a brief appearance as Drayton Sawyer (aka “The Cook”) in the 2013 sequel Texas Chainsaw 3D.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Review - 50 Years Later, the Horror Classic Is Terrifying
Image
How can a lifelong horror fan have never seen The Texas Chain Saw Massacre? It's paradoxical, I know especially since I count John Carpenter's Halloween and Wes Craven's original A Nightmare on Elm Street among my all-time favorite (and most formative) movies. Released four years before the former and a decade before the latter, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is often credited as fathering everything we associate with the slasher sub-genre. At the least, director Tobe Hooper's controversial venture helped popularize the style, tropes, and concept (beautiful teens meeting gruesome ends at the hands of hulking serial killers) enough for later imitators to saturate the market.

Best Horror Movies of All Time List Gets Backlash From Horror Fans
Image
Everyone has an opinion, and whenever some kind of definitive list is released, it's the subject of a lot of criticism. Some of the most vocal fans out there are horror fans, so if anyone chooses to make a list of the best of the best of the genre, it's going to be picked apart with a fine-toothed comb. One such list has emerged just in time for spooky season, and let's just say that fans are howling with disagreement about the final results.

Variety recently released its list of The 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time and gave the number one position to 1974's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Most horror fans were thrilled to see the horror classic at the top of the list, with Vulture and Fangoria's Brandon Streussnig agreeing by saying, "Not only for horror, but maybe one of the five best American films ever made,...

Gone Girl sees Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike), the inspiration for the beloved series of “Amazing Amy” children’s books, go missing. The prime suspect is her husband Nick (Ben Affleck), though he is as shocked at his wife’s disappearance as the police are.

As the days go by and more clues are unearthed, it becomes clear that Nick isn’t honest as he seems, and that the marriage he had with Amy may not have been as blissful as everyone thought.

Ryan Murphy Reveals Monster Season 3 Title, Explains Charlie Hunnam's Casting as Ed Gein
Image
A third season of Netflix's Monster series is in the works with Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam playing notorious murderer Ed Gein. The season will follow previous seasons that explored the stories of Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers.

In an interview with Collider, series co-creator Ryan Murphy explained why Gein was chosen as the real-life killer who serves as the focus of the third season of Monster. He shared that the idea came from discussions with co-creator Ian Brennan, as the two realized that Gein was essentially the first American serial killer to be turned into a "crazy celebrity" of sorts. Murphy pointed out how Gein's crimes influenced several celebrated genre films and he was intrigued by telling the story of how the "Butcher of Plainfield" came to be.

Image
Charlie Hunnam has taken on some killer roles over the years, from Jax Teller in Sons Of Anarchy, to Percy Fawcett in The Lost City Of Z, to Ray in The Gentlemen — heck, the man even played King Arthur, the titular role, in Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword. Now, after a jaunt to Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon, Hunnam is lining up an actual killer role — a serial killer one, in fact. Per Deadline's reporting, at the premiere of Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story on Monday, showrunner Ryan Murphy not only unexpectedly announced that a third season of his true crime anthology series is in the works, but that Hunnam will star in it as infamous murderer Ed Gein.

At this year’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest, we were lucky enough to catch up with directors Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott about their new horror documentary, Generation Terror, which had its world premiere at the event.

Immediately after the screening, the pair granted us the following interview about the documentary, and fans of their work will definitely be interested in hearing what they have to say. Appleton and Escott are already an established duo, as they previously co-directed another horror documentary called The Found Footage Phenomenon, which examines the found footage subgenre. While Escott individually helmed a documentary about the popular Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise called The Legacy of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Appleton individually helmed a documentary about filmmaker David Hamilton Grant called Damaged. She also previously co-directed a feature length documentary about Japanese horror called The J-Horror Virus alongside Jasper Sharp.

Strange Darling Flips One Of Horror Movies' Oldest Tropes
Image
Major spoilers for "Strange Darling" follow.

Director J.T. Mollner's indie horror flick "Strange Darling" has finally opened in U.S. theaters with the wind of good publicity at its back. In a fascinating career pivot, "Strange Darling" was shot on 35mm film by actor Giovanni Ribisi making his debut as a cinematographer. Then, there's the promise of a twist in both the film's marketing and reviews.

"Go in blind" is easy criticism when a film anchors itself with a twist but "Strange Darling" earns that rave. The film is introduced as a story told in six chapters, but those chapters are presented out of order. Mollner banks on his audience's genre and gendered expectations as he assembles the movie's puzzle pieces together before their eyes.

So, what does "Strange Darling" appear to be about? A young woman, "The Lady," (Willa Fitzgerald) is fleeing a man, "The Demon" (Kyle Gallner...

10 Horror Movies That Ripped Off The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
Image
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre inspired countless rip-offs that shaped the horror genre for years to come. Some films, like The Butcher, failed to capture the essence of the original, lacking in quality and innovation. Standout movies like House of the Devil and Wrong Turn successfully paid homage to the iconic Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was among the most influential horror movies ever made, and in the years since its release, there have been countless imitators and copycat movies. Director Tobe Hooper created a new type of horror as he depicted the unstoppable serial killer Leatherface, which would signal the dawn of a new era of over-the-top violence and the use of power tools as a murder weapon. While some rip-offs of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre were blatant cash grabs, others truly added to its concept and led to movies that could be enjoyed on their own merits.

'The Driller Killer' Delivers on Its Promise, and So Much More
Image
In the late 1970s, two subgenres of horror began to take off, with both slashers and grindhouse pictures marking a change in the genre. Thanks to films like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Black Christmas, and Halloween, movies about knife (and chainsaw) wielding killers gave audiences a more realistic type of fear, after the domination of fear fests like The Exorcist and The Omen. The '70s also marked the rise of grindhouse, low budget movies which might have been campy and filled with bad acting, but which were effective thanks to their gritty rawness. In 1979, director Abel Ferrara found a way to tap into both subgenres with The Driller Killer. Ferrara had made his name as a director of adult films, but with The Driller Killer, the future mastermind behind critically acclaimed films such as King of New York, Bad Lieutenant, and Body Snatchers, got to tell a story about madness,...

MaXXXine's 11 Easter Eggs & Horror Movie References Explained
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for MaXXXine (2024)

MaXXXine pays homage to '80s slashers while weaving in nods to Hollywood history & pop culture. References to silent film star Theda Bara, Buster Keaton, and Giallo films add depth to the story. The film's setting in 1985 allows for an exploration of entertainment ethics and the dark side of the industry.

While MaXXXine includes a lot of nods to its predecessors X and Pearl, director Ti Wests 80s-set slasher also features a plethora of references to famous movies, people, and pieces of Hollywood and horror history. Pearls iconic ending was always going to be a tough act to follow, but Ti Wests follow-up to 2022s psychological horror is a fitting end to the trilogy that began with 2022s X. While X was a 70s-set homage to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Pearl was a Technicolor nightmare that subverted the Golden Age of Hollywood,...

Horror Movies Audiences Believed Were True
Image
Engulfing audiences in a cinematic world where the line between reality and make-believe become blurred is the stuff movies are made of -- but what happens when the movie becomes so visceral, we start to question its truthfulness?

Horror films in particular can walk that fine line of clever filmmaking and creating an unsettling, nagging feeling that what we're watching is someone's actual terror. Many of these films use the pseudo-documentary/mockumentary style to disarm audiences, conflating a typically non-fiction setup with entirely fictional elements. Meanwhile, others rely on crafty marketing campaigns to stir up curiosity, suspicion, controversy, or all of the above. Whether a movie informs audiences that the story ahead of them is based on true events or the director opts for frenetic handheld camerawork, there are some movies executed so well that movie-goers will debate their authenticity long after the credits roll.

A subgenre that has existed for decades,...

How ‘In a Violent Nature’ Twists and Reverses the Slasher Formula
Image
Warning: the following contains major spoilers for In a Violent Nature.

Most seasoned horror fans have seen their share of slashers. From massive franchises to indie gems, this particular brand of scary movie follows a final girl and her friends as they’re terrorized by a masked killer with an ax to grind. Arguably originating from classics like Halloween and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the sub genre was codified in Carol Clover’s “Her Body, Himself” which opens Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, an academic study of the genre. This landmark essay coined the term “final girl” while identifying four additional slasher components. Clover summarizes “the killer is the psychotic product of a sick family, but still recognizably human; the victim is a beautiful, sexually active woman; the location is not-home, at a Terrible Place; the weapon is something other than a gun...

David Corenswet Flexed That Sweet Superman Charm in a Modern Horror Classic
Image
Theres a relatively shaky history of horror prequels, but Ti Wests extraordinary 2022 psychological horror film Pearl is a well-developed origin story for the titular character that Mia Goth portrayed in 2021's X. If X is an extended tribute to classical slasher films like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Psycho, Pearl is a haunting exploration of the Golden Age of Hollywood that refuses to look at the past with rose-tinted glasses. Bold, inventive, and surprisingly emotional, Pearl is the type of inventive horror film that the genre desperately needs more of. While Goths performance was worthy of an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, Pearl also featured a stand-out performance from David Corenswet.

'Bridgerton's Cressida Is Also One of the Best Texas Chainsaw Massacre Characters
Image
Bridgerton Season 3's most unanticipated character arc absolutely belongs to Jessica Madsen's Cressida Cowper, whose temperamental mean girl ways are slightly reforming. But what's more unexpected about Madsen is her under-the-radar role in a notorious horror franchise that made a significant impact on its legacy. Before donning her lingering snarl with shiny jewels, tight curls, and ballgowns, Madsen played the unpredictable psychopath, Clarice, in Leatherface (2017). Clarice becomes one of the key contributors to the birth of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's legendary killer, Leatherface, whose villain origin story is chronicled in an ambiguous manner in the 2017 film. This ambiguity leaves us wondering which one of the escaped psychiatric facility patients actually becomes the chainsaw-wielding killer, with Clarice herself in the running. But the most exciting part about Madsen's character is really how she was created, from her inspiration to Madsen's interpretation of this manic pyromaniac.

This Slasher Movie Is ‘Deliverance’ Meets ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre'

Horror underwent a radical change in the 1970s and early '80s, as religious tropes and monster movies gave way to more human threats in masks, creating the rise of the slasher. While many credit Halloween for this boom, it actually began before John Carpenter's 1978 film. The year before, Wes Craven released The Hills Have Eyes which, while not exactly a slasher, carried many of its tropes. A few years before that, Tobe Hooper pulled the cord and unleashed The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the frightening Leatherface out onto the world. Going into the 1980s, a new slasher was coming out every week, starring either a man in a mask or a giant hulk chasing teenagers through the woods. 1980's Friday the 13th did it best, leading to a game-changing franchise, but while this was being made, another horror movie was preparing to unleash another killer in the woods.

New Line Cinema Needs to Reboot Their Slasher Universe
Image
New Line Cinema's history is rooted in horror, especially the iconic slasher film A Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, and Jason Voorhees are top-tier slasher icons under New Line, but there is potential for reboots of Critters and Alone in the Dark. With Hollywood's focus on '80s properties, New Line could bring back slasher classics like Critters or create new hits, as they did producing Evil Dead Rise.

New Line Cinema, "The House that Freddy Built." And, eventually, the house behind Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. But, still, it was horror that laid down the bricks that Sam and Frodo would traverse to toss the ring. Specifically, slashers, when they handled the United States re-release of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. They also dealt with the distribution of Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead.

But, of course, it was...

The ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Remake Is More Disturbing Than the Origina
Image
When Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre came out in 1974, it was unlike anything audiences had ever seen before. There were outliers, like Psycho and Peeping Tom in 1960, but horror five decades ago was often gothic and centered around monsters, before a wave of religious horror, thanks to 1973's The Exorcist, caused that subgenre to have its moment. This was still a couple of years before Halloween would popularise films about masked men wreaking havoc on innocent people. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was a hit, but a controversial one, as many complained of the film's excessive gore. The controversy speaks to how effective the atmosphere was, for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre actually has little of the red stuff, but makes us think it does with closeups of violence just off-center.

Black Tower Studios Announced as New Developer for ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’
Saw (2004)
Back on Friday, Gun Interactive announced the impending farewell of Sumo Nottingham, the original developer for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Obviously, fans were worried who was going to pick up development of the asymmetrical multiplayer game. We now have our answer in the form of Black Tower Studios.

Friday The 13th: The Game players will be familiar with Black Tower Studios, as the Japanese developer took over development duties on Friday The 13th: The Game from IllFonic back in 2018. Their work included the Jarvis House and Pinehurst maps for that game, as well as provided support. After which, Black Tower Studios will be working on the future Dlc content for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Image
MaXXXine will answer the biggest question from X: what happened to Maxine after the farmhouse massacre? The film could explain the backstory of how Howard and Pearl met and why Howard stayed with Pearl. MaXXXine might reveal how Pearl got away with murdering her parents and explore Maxine's journey to becoming an actress.

MaXXXine is finally on the way, and here are 10 lingering questions from X and Pearl that the upcoming film can answer. MaXXXine is the third film in Ti West's beloved A24 horror franchise, with it kicking off with X and Pearl in 2022 only for MaXXXine to round out the trilogy. Despite the franchise's small scale, an immense amount of lore has been packed into the world of X and Pearl, and MaXXXine can continue this horror trend by tying up these loose ends.

According to 2023's Box Office, the Future of Horror Is Rated PG-13
Image
In terms of scale, 2023 was certainly a more low-key year of horror cinema compared to other modern annual slates of scary movies. There was no major mid-budget horror tentpole like 2022’s Nope or the two Quiet Place movies dropping into theaters in 2023, while there weren't family-friendly horror films dominating multiplexes like late 2010s titles The House with a Clock in its Walls or the Goosebumps movies. However, microbudget smash hits like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Halloween have long proven horror doesn’t need a sizeable price tag to attract moviegoers. 2023 horror cinema was thrifty in budget but reliably brought out the crowds with a level of consistency that would make other genres green with envy. Nine different horror films cracked $48 million domestically in 2023 while five titles exceeded $80 million in this territory.

The Correct Order To Watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Series
Image
As of this writing, there are nine movies in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" series, and sussing out their chronology is one of the more herculean tasks a horror fan may find themselves undertaking. Like the "Halloween" movies, the "Texas Chainsaw" flicks abide by a choose-your-own-adventure structure, with some movies following a definite timeline, and others merrily ignoring previous chapters. Confoundingly, several of them have almost identical titles. The only consistent element of "Texas Chainsaw" is that they are all horrifically violent and unbearably disturbing. But, y'know, in a good way.

The premise of the "Texas Chainsaw" movies is simple. Thanks to rampant American poverty, entire families have been forced to live off the grid in remote, rural parts of the country. One of these families, largely inbred and blissfully detached from conventional morality, has taken to kidnapping passersby, stripping them for meat, and using their skin and bones as construction materials.

Gun Interactive did a little teasing a few weeks back regarding more new content for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and now they’ve revealed that new content arrives on November 28th in the form of a brand new free map with Nancy’s House. Both can be purchased the same day as the map’s release for $9.99 each.

As you’ll see from the trailer, Nancy isn’t quite as sweet as she initially appears. No info yet on what Nancy and Danny’s abilities are at the moment, but we’ll surely hear more about them soon.

Along with Nancy’s House and the new characters, Gun Interactive will also roll out a new quality-of-life patch that includes over 250 fixes for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

'Trick ‘r Treat' Was Almost Helmed by “The Avengers of Horror”
Image
Director Michael Dougherty delivered a true Halloween classic with his horror anthology film Trick 'r Treat released in 2007. Before it became the interconnected story of monstrous ghouls in Warren Valley with the adorable yet vengeful holiday tradition enforcer Sam at the center, however, it was more of a segmented film in the vein of Creepshow or other similar titles. According to Dougherty, it even had a few legendary directors involved including the king of zombies George Romero and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre mastermind Tobe Hooper. While speaking with Collider's Perri Nemiroff during a Trick 'r Treat Q&a and screening for Scary Perri's Horror Series, he recounted his experience pitching the film to one other potential collaborator — John Carpenter.

'Suburban Screams', Or: 'John Carpenter’s Unsolved Mysteries'
Image
John Carpenter is a master of horror — the man practically invented the slasher subgenre with 1978’s Halloween (with a big assist from Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Peeping Tom). His remake of The Thing in 1982 is still regularly cited as one of the most terrifying films of all time. Not to mention the fact that he went on to make In the Mouth of Madness, They Live, and Christine. If we ignore his 1998 film Vampires (and we really should ignore it), Carpenter has one of the most pristine cinematic records for churning out terrifying horror time and time again.
