April has been a solid month for Netflix. They’ve gained back the popular comedy series Community, Money Heist: Part 4 did exceptionally well, and they’ve had surprising hits out of Ed Helms’ Coffee & Kareem and Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction. And now they’re bringing a few more hopeful titles to the service today, April 28th.
The biggest film of the batch is the 2011 alien invasion flick Battle: Los Angeles. It wasn’t exceptionally well-received when it released, and it won’t be winning you over with its fairly standard plot, but there’s enough action and explosions to keep your mind and eyes entertained for a few hours if you’ve already caught up on Netflix’s other big action titles.
The one new show being added today, meanwhile, is a Netflix Original from Mindy Kaling called Never Have I Ever. The series follows Indian-American teen Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan...

The pilot who died Monday in a small plane crash in Sylmar has been identified as Scott Watson, a research and development executive at Walt Disney Imagineering.
Watson was described as the quintessential imagineer: someone who was both creative and technically savvy. Those who worked with him said he left his mark on scores of Disney’s theme park attractions, from Indiana Jones to Soarin’ Over The World to the upcoming Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge.
“He had a million ideas and was just a brilliant person to be around,” said Phil Lelyveld, who worked on projects with Watson over his 10-year tenure at Disney and now runs the Immersive Media Program at the USC’s Entertainment Technology Center, a think tank within the school of Cinematic Arts. “He came up with a number of novel ideas for the theme parks and other things in Disney, but he also had...

Local films take a larger market share in Turkey than Hollywood films.
Leading South Korean entertainment studio Cj E&M has announced it will invest in and distribute 25 local films in Turkey by June 2019.
Cj stated it has “joined hands with Turkey’s no. 1 production company Bkm and no. 2 production company Taff to secure an investment-distribution line-up,” to “solidify” Cj’s position as a film production, investment and distribution studio in Turkey.
The Korean company noted its Turkish partners were responsible for six out of 2017’s top 10 local films with Bkm, established in 1994, steadily producing more than 10 films a year, and...

Aladdin better duck and cover. According to a new poll released by Public Policy Polling, an alarming number of voters supports bombing Agrabah, the fictional county featured in the 1992 animated Disney film “Aladdin.” Among those who most strongly support the possible bombing: supporters of Donald Trump, 41 percent of whom favor unloading on Agrabah. See video: Aladdin Takes Magic Carpet Ride Through NYC in Viral Stunt Only 9 percent of Trump supporters disapproved of the notion. To be fair, Trump supporters weren’t alone in wanting to bomb Agrabah — 30 percent of Republican primary voters approved of the proposed action, compared with 13 percent who opposed.

The digital music revolution started with Napster – the file-sharing service dreamt up by two teenagers in 1999. As a new film tells Napster's story, Tom Lamont recalls the incredible sense of liberation he felt as a young music fan, one of millions happily plundering the world's record collections…
In the first weeks of 2000 the founders of Napster were in their office above a bank in San Mateo, California, considering dizzying numbers. Figures scrawled on a whiteboard told how many people around the world had installed their file-sharing application and were using it to download music from each other's computers. As recounted in Downloaded – a documentary soon to premiere at the SXSW film festival, telling the story of a piece of software that came and went and whipped up a new digital music industry in its slip – Napster had 20 million users at the time. Some way from San Mateo, in suburban London...

It's not an easy thing, playing a father-daughter rock-duo, and making it seem authentic. For "Janie Jones" stars Abigail Breslin and Alessandro Nivola had to fit the bill, but it was easier for one than the other.
Breslin may be known for her dance moves from her breakout role in "Little Miss Sunshine," but when it came to singing, she was a novice before getting the role. "For me, I never really sung before. I started taking a few voice lessons just for fun, and then it was kind of coincidence that this script came about," said Breslin, who plays the titular role of Janie Jones, a young sing-songwriter abandoned by her mom and left to live with her dead-beat rocker dad, played by Nivola.
The role presented Breslin with an opportunity that she found both rewarding and stressful. "It was incredibly nerve-racking especially to go in with somebody who was so experienced,...

Friends with Benefits
Directed by: Will Gluck
Cast: Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Richard Jenkins, Woody Harrelson, Patricia Clarkson
Running Time: 1 hr 49 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: July 22, 2011
Plot: New friends Dylan (Timberlake) and Jamie (Kunis) attempt to have a sexual relationship while sharing only platonic feelings for one another.
Who’S It For?: Friends with Benefits might be best enjoyed by hip folk who love Katherine Heigl comedies but wonder why they don’t have as much sex as an American Pie movie.
Overall
“F**k you, Katherine Heigl!”
Friends with Benefits begins by saying what all real romantics have been shouting in movie theaters and at TV screens for years. It becomes your friend at first. Even its pure vulgarity during intimate, no-holds-barred intimate scenes make the movie to feel truly amicable. All with the intent of giving Hollywood’s lying Katherine Heigls and Kate Hudsons a run for their pride,...

- The Scorecard Review
A summery, soulful vibe dominates the first half of the soundtrack to Friends With Benefits, the new comedy from Will Gluck which is unlikely to have a single review or article written about it that doesn’t mention Ivan Reitman’s conceptually identical No Strings Attached (hey, fulfilled my own prophecy there! Shaping the future. Yay me).
However just as the balmy heat and blue skies of summer can offer an irresistible environment for certain ill-advised behaviours (too much drinking, too much sun, spending your hard-earned money on a ticket for Green Lantern), so the early part of this tie-in album finds a number of classic songs receiving a refresh treatment that you’re not quite sure they ever really needed.
But, having said that, if logic dictates that only a brave fool would try to cover the Cure’s cast-iron classic Boys Don’t Cry, then the stripped-back, sensitive...

American Idol has entered the MySpace era (aka 2006), and is tapping into the powerful musical legacies of Toni Basil, Billy Ray Cyrus, and the Crash Test Dummies. Nope, I’m not pulling your leg. For the first time in its ten-season history, Fox’s behemoth of a singing competition is giving contestants the chance to audition online at myspace.com/americanidol from now through Oct. 6. Hopefuls between the ages of 15 and 28 (as of July 15, 2010) can submit 40-second videos in which they belt out one of 90 pre-approved tracks (listed below). Idol producers will then invite a select number of online auditioners...

Expectations are now so low on this season of "American Idol" that when news broke that Miley Cyrus was going to "mentor" the Top 11 as they sang "Teen Idol Hits No Wait Billboard #1 Hits No Wait Both Maybe," I shrugged and said, "Eh, they've had worse." (I'm still laughing at producers for letting Jennifer Lopez give singing tips to Melinda Doolittle.) Looking back on my reaction, I now see I was dead wrong.
Miley Cyrus is a genius mentor for the season nine contestants. The best lesson these kids could learn is how to become uber-famous performers with limited vocal abilities. Who knows that better than Miley Cyrus?
Tuesday night's (March 23) show opened with the Top 11 nervously standing on stage while Ryan Seacrest's giant face appeared behind them on a massive monitor borrowed from 1984. (That number works as both a reference to George Orwell's classic and perfectly encapsulates...

Photo: The Weinstein Co. If you hadn't already figured out I have been doing my best to post at least one Quentin Tarantino feature piece every day this week as we lead up to this Friday's release of the long-awaited Inglourious Basterds and today is no different as I have for you a ten question quiz about the man that brought us Reservoir Dogs in 1992, Pulp Fiction in 1994, Jackie Brown in 1997, the Kill Bill saga in 2003 and 2004 and most recently Death Proof as part of the Grindhouse double-feature in 2007. The question is, how closely were you paying attention along the way? As I was making this quiz I think I came up with ten questions that are entirely fair and will undoubtedly be easy to answer for the major Tarantino fans, but may have a couple of tough ones in there for the in-betweeners. Here's a rather easy sample question to test the waters,...
