- Kamal Kishore Khosla is a retired middle-class man living in Delhi with his wife, daughter, and two sons. His elder son, software engineer son Chiraunjilal, is barely interested in family affairs and is planning to relocate to the US while the younger, Balwant, although cheerful, is not much thought of by his father. Sharma has put all his life's savings into buying a plot outside Delhi, but on the day of their shifting, they find their plot has been taken overnight by Khurana Builders. - Kamalkishore Khosla lives a upper-middle-class life in Delhi, India with his wife Sudha; daughter Nikki; and two sons, Chiraunjilal and Balwant. He invests 30 Lakh rupees to buy a plot in Sapnavihar through a broker named Rajendra. When he goes to take possession of the plot, he finds that it belongs to Khurana Constructions. After Rajendra refuses to help him in any way, he goes to meet the head of the organization, Kishan, who is willing to part with the plot for an additional 15 Lakh rupees. Stunned at this manner of extortion, they go to a senior official of Delhi Police, who conditionally wants to help them if he gets a share of the money being exchanged. Then Balwant hires some wrestlers, who demolish the wall and put up Khosla's name. The next day, Khosla is arrested and held in a cell by Delhi Police, he is released only when Khurana withdraws the complaint and reduces the price of the plot to 12 Lakhs. It has now become clear to Khosla that the entire system of brokers, Police officials and other political figures are fully aware of this extortion scheme, appear to be in league with Khurana. Then Khosla and his family face another crisis when Chiraunjilal tells them that he is re-locating to the U.S. for better prospects. Kamalkishore throws up his hands and gives up on the plot. Watch what happens, when Chiraunjilal's Visa agent, Asif Iqbal, decides to lend a helping hand to the Khoslas--involving a risk big enough to land the entire family behind bars.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
- Kamal Kishore Khosla (Anupam Kher) is a middle-class man (who fears that he is so insignificant in life that his own family wont care a jot when he dies) living in New Delhi where he has purchased a plot of land (for Rs 30 Lakhs + Rs 5 Lakhs as commission for the agent) to build a house. His family includes his wife Sudha (Kiran Juneja), the younger son, Chiraunji Lal a.k.a. Cherry (Parvin Dabas), elder son Balwant (Ranvir Shorey) a.k.a. Bunty and his daughter Nikki (Rupam Bajwa). Mr Sawhney (Vinod Nagpal) is Kamal's best friend and his morning walk buddy.
Kamal has invested all his savings into buying the plot. Cherry is not too interested in his father's plan to settle together in the new house which Kamal intends to build on the new plot. He is a software engineer and intends to move to the US to take up a job there. However, Cherry has not let his family in on his plans.
The only person he discusses this with is Asif Iqbal (Vinay Pathak), the agent helping him with his passport and visa paperwork. Cherry tells his family that he wants to change his name, as Chiraunji is very old fashioned. Kamal is not happy at all, but Sawhney advises him to compromise with his young son and tells him to have a couple of drinks with Cherry to calm him down. Kamal organizes a drinks night, but Cherry gets more angry and says that he doesn't drink.
During the angry argument, he shares this news with his girlfriend Meghna (Tara Sharma). Later Cherry reveals to his family about his new job in America. During a visit to their land for Bhumipujan, they find their plot encroached upon by someone. Further probing reveals the squatters are part of a property usurping nexus headed by the corrupt and powerful Kishan Khurana (Boman Irani). Upon being urged so by the property dealer Vijendar (Rajendra Sethi) who had facilitated the purchase of the plot, Kamal and Bunty visit Khurana (& his assistant Munjal (Rajesh Sharma)) who demands rupees 15 Lakhs to vacate the plot, an amount which Kamal neither has nor agrees to pay. He appeals to authorities (Inspector (Danish Aslam)) and agencies (Police, politicians, lawyers, activists) for help. None of them offers more than to get the amount Khurana demands reduced by a few Lakhs (Rs 10 Lakhs) in exchange for a hefty commission (Rs 2 Lakhs) for mediating.
Spurred by his father's helplessness, Bunty gets help from a gang of local wrestlers who demolish the boundary walls built by Khurana's men and take back possession of the plot by force. This success is short-lived when Kamal is arrested on trumped-up charges of trespass. Released at Khurana's guileful behest (and a revised offer of Rs 12 Lakhs) after spending a day in jail, Kamal's will is broken and his pride battered. He tells his family to avoid taking any further action as he is incapable of fighting back and wants Cherry to concentrate on the job that he is arranging abroad. Cherry discusses the grim situation with Iqbal who is revealed to have been an old partner of Khurana's and who has been cheated by him, having usurped Asif's own ancestral land.
Asif offers to help the Khoslas with a group of Meghna's friends, and they set up a plan to deceive Khurana. They portray some land (owned by the fisheries department (9 acres, right next to the highway), but which has been vacant for decades) as their own, and seek the help of Meghna's mentor, Bapu (Navin Nischol), to act as the owner of the land looking for a buyer. Kamal is totally against the idea as he wants Cherry to focus on his US career and get tangled with Kamal's domestic issues. Swahney convinces Kamal to let Cherry try at least.
Bapu, who is the manager of a drama theatre group, acts as the owner (Mr Sethi from Dubai. He has a secretary, and 2 mobile phones each with a Dubai number, rented Merc and 5 star hotel room) of the vacant land. With the help of the rest of his theatre group, they manage to create a situation so that Khurana believes the authenticity of the land and its owner. They start with Bapu meeting Vijendar and treating him like shit (as Bapu doesn't deal with brokers), to create the illusion that he has a prime land to sell. Vijendar brings Khurana & Munjal into the picture, who comes to meet Bapu at the hotel.
In the meeting Bapu uses Khurana's love for Mata Vaishnodevi to create a personal bond with him. He refuses to speak with Munjal and Vijendar. Khurana wants to see the land and the appointment is set for Friday. Asif helps Cherry establish a whole family on the land, that seems loyal to Bapu and looks like been living there for yrs.
The deal is finalized and They successfully dupe Khurana (fake property papers are provided by Asif) and he agrees to buy the land (Deal is for Rs 1.4 Crore, with Rs 35 Lakhs as upfront cash payment). Khurana will hand over the money at the land itself, but the entire cast who performed at the land is now in Bangalore. So, Asif and Cherry ask the family members to play the various roles that were played when Khurana first visited the land. Kamal also has to play a role. Khurana finally agrees to hand over the money.
From that money, Kamal pays the ransom to Khurana and regains possession of his plot; the remaining cash is divided equally between the Khoslas, Asif and the theatre group. Cherry scraps his plans to migrate to the US, marries Meghna and settles with his family in their new house built on the plot. Khurana eventually figures out that he has been defrauded, but decides to keep the matter a secret to protect his own reputation
