- A debt-ridden young man attempts suicide, but is rescued only to find that his luck is finally turning.
- A young man named Jeetu finds himself in debt with his father receiving harassing visits from money-lenders. Although his father is scolded daily for his non-progress in their debts, his mother and his fiancée Pooja believe he can successfully fulfill his task and live happily, but burdened with high debt, Jeetu sees suicide as his only way out of the situation (insurance money for the family). Unfortunately for him, taking a plunge off a dock into a placid ocean doesn't kill him. He awakens in a boat with two very interesting characters, Gundya and his servant Bundya. In the cost of putting Jeetu in a hospital and saving his life, Gundya and Bundya believe Jeetu owes them a debt. Already in much debt , Jeetu decides to play off that he is deaf and mute. He then finds himself mortgaged to a wealthy man, Prabhart Singh in return for Gundya's confiscated boat and thus ends up as a servant boy at a mansion in Kolkata. It is here where he meets Prabhart's beautiful daughter Meenakshi and mute (not dumb or deaf) niece Shruti. After many convolutions later, Jeetu and Shruti fall in love, and Mangal (Shruti's brother and the true head of the family) is ready to have them married, but something from Jeetu 's past comes back to haunt him .—Teri Maa

There he was deemed a maid servant and suddenly reach up with Prabhat Singh's beautiful and Pretty daughter Meenakshi and her dumb and deaf niece Shruti. All of a sudden Shruti falls in love with Jeet and her brother Mangal decides to get them married but his love at first Pooja came back into his life, she was made a widow before she could be married to Jeet who commits suicide but finds him alive and okay she decides to marry him but all had to be sacrifice and Jeet was made to marry the deaf and dumb girl Shruti. - Jeetu (Shahid Kapoor) is a down-on-his-luck boy who loses money in whatever business he invests in. His debt keeps increasing. The biggest creditor to Jeetu is Sharmaji (Asrani). In total, Jeetu owes Rs 13 Lakhs 90 thousand to his creditors. He had borrowed money, to buy land and to plant mango saplings, but the land was acquired by the government to lay down a railway track.
Due to his huge debts, his father Jai Dev (Anupam Kher), mother (Amita Nangia) and everyone else are worried about him. Jai Dev had already mortgaged his house to pay for Jeetu's failed business ventures. Frustrated, Jeetu breaks off his engagement to Pooja (Sushma Reddy). Pooja's father is Mohan Prakash (Manoj Joshi). Mohan hates Jeetu as he is good for nothing, but knows that Pooja is madly in love with Jeetu, and wont consider marrying anyone else till Jeetu is around. Jeetu decides to commit suicide so that his father can pay off all the debt with the insurance money after her death. Jeetu calls all the people from whom he has taken loan to the riverbank and after telling this, he jumps into the water. Even after people search extensively, his body is not found. Swimmers say that due to high water flow the body might have gone far away.
Fishermen Gundiya (Paresh Rawal) and Bandya (Rajpal Yadav) find a man (who is actually Jeetu) in the net. They take him to the hospital and there they start thinking of Jeetu as dumb and deaf. Jeetu also starts doing similar drama. Jeetu had the list of creditors in his pocket, and the money he owed them, but Gundiya misunderstands that believes that Jeetu is a creditor and has to receive that amount of money from his debtors. Gundiya and Bandya hope to get Rs 5 Lakhs as reward for returning Jeetu to his family. Due to Jeetu's drama, Gundiya has no clue of his name or identity and hence cannot claim his reward. Meanwhile the police force Gundiya to take care of Jeetu till his identity is ascertained. Gundiya is worried about all the expenses he is incurring on Jeetu.
Gundiya owes money to rich boat owner Prabhat. Prabhat Singh Chauhan (Om Puri) takes Gundiya's boat due to not getting his money. When Gundiya comes to him asking for the boat back, Prabhat Singh Chauhan asks him to give him something to keep as a guarantee. He gives Jeetu and Bandya as guarantee and goes away with the boat. Gundiya tells Prabhat that Jeetu is his nephew Kanhaiya.
Natwar Jhunjhunwala (Shakti Kapoor) is Prabhat's manager. Both of them are made to work there as servants at Prabhat's house. Mangal (Suniel Shetty) is the head of the family, even though he is the son of Prabhat's elder brother. Shruti is Mangal's sister. Shruti is dumb and is hence sympathetic towards Jeetu. Meenakshi is Prabhat's daughter and they all live in the same house as a joint family. One day Meenakshi (Neha Dhupia) and Shruti (Kareena Kapoor) discover that Jeetu is not dumb and deaf. Instead of keeping his secret a secret, they want to do something else. Shruti's marriage is arranged in a house which is only greedy for money. The boy's family has for 2 companies and a lot of land as dowry in exchange for marriage with Shruti. To break this marriage, Meenakshi asks Jeetu to pretend to be Shruti's lover and call her fiance, due to which the wedding proposal breaks. Mangal suspects Jeetu of sabotaging the proposal and beats him senseless. But Prabhat intervenes and tells Mangal that even Jeetu is deaf and dumb and hence could not have called the boy's family. Mangal gives Jeetu a job for Rs 20,000 per month. Meenakshi wants Jeetu to leave the house, but Jeetu also refuses and says that he will reveal that Meenakshi was behind the plot to break Shruti's wedding.
One day, Sharma comes to meet Prabhat and Meenakshi sees Jeetu hiding from him. Meenakshi learns that Jeetu has a lot of debt and can do anything for money. Meenakshi gets Jeetu's photo from Sharma and realizes that this is the same Kanhaiya who has been living in their house. Before Meenakshi can say anything to Prabhat, Jeetu and Prabhat go by car with a lot of money and meet with a road accident. Due to both of them not returning, they feel as if Jeetu has done something.
On Meenakshi's request, the police catch Jeetu and beat him thoroughly. Prabhat returns home and tells that his car met with an accident, after which Jeetu took him to the hospital and after giving the money to the person to whom he was supposed to pay, he went to get the medicine, but did not return. Knowing this they all feel regretful.
Meenakshi and Shruti know that Prabhat has been stealing money from Mangal to run his own businesses which are all making losses. In fact, the money that Sharma loaned Jeetu, belonged to Prabhat. They threaten to reveal the truth to Mangal and Prabhat is very afraid of Mangal.
Meenakshi and Shruti force Prabhat to give them Rs 13.9 Lakhs and send the money to Jeetu's village through the hands of Bandya. When Bandya meets Mohan, he realizes that Kanhaiya is really Jeetu and is neither deaf nor dumb. Bandya comes and tells that Pooja has got married, hearing which Jeetu becomes happy. Jeetu still won't go back to the village as he knows that Pooja only married someone else believing the Jeetu is dead. Seeing him alive would make Pooja feel very guilty. But in reality, Pooja was living with Jai Dev as Jeetu's widow.
Meanwhile, Shruti expresses her love to Jeetu. Mangal learns that Shruti is in love with Jeetu and decides to get them married. Jeetu, now free from debt and in love with Shruti, agrees to the marriage. Jeetu reveals to Mangal that he is not deaf or dumb and assures him that Shruti knew of his reality, and he never betrayed her trust.
Meanwhile, Jeetu's family members come to know that Jeetu is alive, when Mangal sends them money via Bandya and Gundiya. Jai Dev goes to meet Jeetu on the day of the wedding, and Jeetu is shocked to learn that Pooja never married anyone else and is living as his widow. He cannot explain anything to Jai Dev as Prabhat pulls him inside the house. Later, Jeetu explains everything to Shruti and goes home to get Pooja's permission to marry Shruti. The family wants Jeetu to accept Pooja, but he is helpless.
Jai Dev and Mohan come to the wedding ceremony, and everyone starts arguing. When Pooja learns that Shruti cannot speak, she changes her mind and asks Jeetu to marry Shruti. After this, Jeetu and Shruti get married, and they live happily ever after.
