  • [from trailer]

Solid Snake : I'm no hero... Never was. I'm just an old killer... Hired to do some wet work.

  • Solid Snake : War has changed. It's no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It's an endless series of proxy battles fought by mercenaries and machines. War - and its consumption of life - has become a well-oiled machine. War has changed. ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, use ID-tagged gear. Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities. Genetic control. Information control. Emotion control. Battlefield control. Everything is monitored and kept under control. War has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of control... All in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction. And he who controls the battlefield... controls history. War has changed. When the battlefield is under total control... War becomes routine.

  • Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Hey Snake, something I've been meaning to ask you. That canyon... Isn't that where you demolished Raven's tank? How'd you do it, anyway?

Solid Snake : How? Well... Grenades.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : That's it? You didn't use an anti-tank missile or something?

Solid Snake : Didn't have one.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Your technique is kind of... how do I put this... archaic when it comes to fighting tanks. Honestly, I don't think it'd work on today's main battle tanks.

Solid Snake : Well, that's how I did it. What do you want me to say?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : You know, I asked an active-duty Army officer once: If an infantryman had to take on a tank one-on-one, how should he do it?

Solid Snake : And what was his answer?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : "Don't." He swore there's no way in hell a single infantryman could take down a tank by himself.

    Solid Snake : Interesting.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I always suspected there was a little something crazy about you, Snake. But after hearing that story... Now I know it. You're nuts! Single-handedly taking out a tank? That's crazy! You're insane!

Solid Snake : Otacon, is this your idea of a compliment?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Yes! You're the toughest, craziest, most hardcore badass on the planet! You're... the shit!

  • Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [codec call]  Hold it, Snake. Time to change the disc. I know. I know. It's a pain. But you need to swap disc 1 for disc 2. You see the disc labeled 2?

    Solid Snake : Uhh... No.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Huh? Oh, wait! We're on Playstation 3! It's a Blu-Ray Disc. Dual-layered, too. No need to swap.

Solid Snake : Damnit, Otacon! Get a grip!

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Yeah, what an age we live in, huh, Snake? Wonder what they'll think of next.

  • Solid Snake : [screams]  Liquid!

    Liquid Ocelot : [screams]  Snake!

  • Solid Snake : Am I going to die?

Big Boss : Everyone Dies. You can't stop it. You can't run from it. Let me tell you something... Don't... Don't waste the life you have left fighting.

  • Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [Post credits conversation]  Snake, wait up! You forgot these...

Solid Snake : No thanks. I'm quitting.

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Snake?

Solid Snake : These things will kill ya.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Where will you go...? Our fight is finished. There's nothing left for us to do.

Solid Snake : No. There's one thing I still have to do. I have to see this age off... See what the future brings.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Sounds good to me. I'll go with you.

Solid Snake : Otacon, I'm gonna be dead soon. You don't have to come.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : You said it yourself, Snake. There's nothing inside you can pass on to the next generation. No genes, no memes... You're man-made... You're a beast.

Solid Snake : I know... A blue rose. There won't be any happy "Beauty and the Beast" ending for me. What little time I have left will be spent living... As a beast. A shadow of the inside... Of the old age.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Exactly. That's why you need me. As a witness.

    Solid Snake : A witness?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Yeah. Someone on the outside to bear witness to your final days. Someone to pass on your story... Not that I'm the only witness. But I'll remember everything you were... And stick with you to the end.

    Solid Snake : Otacon...

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Besides, you wouldn't let me suffer Sunny's eggs alone, would you?

  • [holds up Snake]

Johnny Sasaki : Drop your weapon!

[Snake holds up his hands and turns around]

Solid Snake : You haven't even taken the safety off, rookie.

Johnny Sasaki : Careful, I'm no rookie! I'm a ten year vet.

[looks closer to check. Snake uses CQC to snatch his rifle and throw him to the floor]

Solid Snake : How the hell did you ever survive ten years?

  • Solid Snake : LIQUID!

  • Raiden : It was never going to work out for me. It even rained the day I was born.

Solid Snake : You've got it all wrong. You were the lightning in that rain. You can still shine through the darkness.

  • Solid Snake : Now you're a mere mortal, just like us.

Vamp : But can you kill this mere mortal?

  • Otacon : Look.

    Solid Snake : It's Naomi.

    Otacon : ...And Vamp!

Solid Snake : The Beauty and the Beast...

  • Sunny : [during the Act 1 'Mission Briefing,' Sunny is cooking eggs on board the Nomad]  O-Only two eggs, today? Solidus must have taken the day off.

    [singing]

    Sunny : 7892590360...

    [humming]

    Sunny : ... 3305305...

    [continues singing]

    Sunny : ... 4882046652...

Colonel Roy Campbell : The Manhattan incident triggered a serious public backlash. Now, the U.S. has to think twice before intervening militarily in other countries' affairs. This has fueled a push towards military privatization, with PMCs at the heart of that movement.

Solid Snake : PMCs... Private Military Companies.

Colonel Roy Campbell : That's right. PMCs have no basis in nations or ideologies. They are private enterprises, driven by profit. In addition to dispatching mercenaries to war zones, they secure weapons and train local soldiers. They're contractors for war itself, and business is good. Their clientele includes developed nations like the U.S., rebel factions looking to seize power by force... Smaller countries lacking armies of their own... even terrorist groups. They're in the Americas, Asia, the South Pacific, Europe, Africa, the Middle East. The rise of the PMC has spawned a war by proxy, and it's spreading across the globe.

Sunny : [walking downstairs to bring Otacon the eggs she cooked, Sunny begins to stutter]  They, they're... re...

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [typing on his computer]  Sunny, we'll eat them later, okay?

Solid Snake : Every age has its mercenary. These PMCs are nothing new. We've been dealing with them since before the turn of the century.

Colonel Roy Campbell : No, Snake. They're nothing like the mercenaries of the past.

Sunny : [walks over to the side and tries again to give Otacon the eggs]  Th-They're ready.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [continues typing]  Sorry, I'm a little busy right now.

Colonel Roy Campbell : The Pentagon's new battlefield control system has produced a decisive difference between hired guns and the PMCs of today.

[Sunny walks towards Snake and Campbell]

Colonel Roy Campbell : The system was developed by ArmsTech Security.

Solid Snake : ArmsTech? You mean AT Corp?

Colonel Roy Campbell : Eh. In recent years, AT Corp has shifted focus from weapons development to security tools. And since the establishment of AT Security, business has been booming.

[Sunny, feeling disappointed, starts walking upstairs. Otacon turns around and watches her]

Colonel Roy Campbell : The system makes it possible to integrate not only micro-level information on individual soldiers and units, but also macro-level information about field conditions and order of battle.

Solid Snake : So, they've finally achieved total real-time battlefield control?

Colonel Roy Campbell : That's right, and as a result, the global presence of PMCs has grown explosively. Truth is, the rise of system-controlled PMCs has led to a dramatic decline in civilian casualties and human rights violations on the battlefield.

Solid Snake : A cleaner, safer battlefield.

    [grunts]

Solid Snake : Makes for nice propaganda.

Sunny : [drops her two dishes of eggs on top of the stove angrily, looks at an ashtray on the side and a cigarette falls down. Sunny gasps and stomps on the cigarette a few times; she then yells at Snake]  Snake! You were smoking again, weren't you? This is a non-smoking fl-flight!

Colonel Roy Campbell : There's more. State governments and rebel groups can't match the maintenance price of standing forces. PMCs, by comparison, are reliable, easy to use.

[while Campbell continues talking, Otacon tests out the Mk.II]

Colonel Roy Campbell : It wasn't long before everybody had them on the payroll... and as a result, regular armies began to decline worldwide.

[fades to an animated cutscene of the world]

Colonel Roy Campbell : It's hard to believe, I know, but PMCs are beginning to overtake conventional armies in terms of scale. Nowadays it's the PMCs who serve as standard battalions. They already make up sixty percent of all combatant forces in zones of conflict.

    Solid Snake : Sixty percent...

Colonel Roy Campbell : The fact is the world now depends largely on PMCs for waging its wars.

Solid Snake : I thought it was the U.N. that authorized the PMCs in the first place.

Colonel Roy Campbell : The U.S. abstained from voting on that resolution. In effect, Washington was endorsing PMCs without ever revealing its true intentions. Until they got wind of the uprising, that is.

Solid Snake : The U.S. has exported too much military power, and now she's paying the price.

Colonel Roy Campbell : That's exactly it. America has now turned war into a form of economic activity. Analysts are calling it the "war economy," in that it's picking up the slack for the downward-sloping oil market. But I, for one, don't intend to simply stand by and watch it happen. For the PMCs, market expansion entails fanning the flames of war. It means more refugees.

Solid Snake : War orphans, child soldiers.

Colonel Roy Campbell : Yes. Even as PMC soldiers get more specialized, they're also getting younger.

Solid Snake : Mercenaries spun off from state armies, unmanned weapons, child soldiers... Proxy battles in a new Cold War.

Colonel Roy Campbell : There are hundreds of PMCs in business worldwide, and their numbers are growing. Currently, five of them are big enough to be labeled global powers. Two in the U.S., and one each in the U.K., France, and Russia. Reconnaissance has revealed that those five PMCs are run by a dummy corporation that acts as a single mother company. This mother company embodies the five largest PMCs. Her name is 'Outer Heaven.'

Solid Snake : Outer Heaven? You mean...!

Colonel Roy Campbell : That's right. It's Liquid.

    Solid Snake : Liquid...

Colonel Roy Campbell : He's taken command of this immense army and is now preparing to unleash an insurrection.

Solid Snake : I watched him die.

Colonel Roy Campbell : His will lives on - in the body of the man once known as Ocelot. He aims to fan the flames of war even higher, to create the perfect world once envisioned by Big Boss.

Solid Snake : The one world in which soldiers will always have a place.

Colonel Roy Campbell : He must be stopped... before it's too late.

    [fades back to the Nomad]

  • Colonel Roy Campbell : Do you understand, Snake? Any means necessary. Just stop Liquid's insurrection. Even if it means...

Solid Snake : Killing him? You want Liquid dead. Isn't that right, Colonel?

Colonel Roy Campbell : I'm sorry. I know... This isn't justice. It's a covert assignment. A hired hit. A wet works op targeting the head of a major multinational corporation.

Solid Snake : [sighs]  Why me?

Colonel Roy Campbell : Because of the military might of the PMCs and the effect they have on the economy. War is to the twenty-first century what oil was to the twentieth: The pillar that supports the global economy. You'll recall a rather alarming report issued by that American think tank during the Cold War. One that described a new model for perpetual war. What we're facing now is a whole new ballgame.

Solid Snake : Iron Mountain's "Delphi Technique"...

Colonel Roy Campbell : That was fiction. It existed only on paper. The reality is far more serious. The global community is concerned, but they're all too afraid of the war economy collapsing to do anything about it. The U.N., too.

Solid Snake : [takes out a cigarette]  Sounds pretty self-serving to me.

[Sunny and Otacon both shake their heads]

Colonel Roy Campbell : Snake, this mission isn't an order from Washington, not like the old days. And it's not something the U.N. can officially sanction, either. But, we can't just look the other way while Liquid plots this insurrection. If we fail to act, he'll become the greatest threat the world has ever faced. Snake...

[takes the cigarette from Snake's hand]

Colonel Roy Campbell : ... you're the only man I can trust.

Solid Snake : [takes the cigarette back]  Fine. Let's hear it.

Colonel Roy Campbell : [brings up a picture of Liquid a.k.a. Ocelot on-screen]  Our intelligence on Liquid's uprising originally comes via reports from U.S. Special Forces, who were mobilized after we at the U.N. reported our findings. They're tracking Liquid's movements. About eighteen hours ago, he was spotted in the Middle East.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : There's a rebel army in the Middle East made up of ethnic minorities, waging civil war against the regime in power.

Colonel Roy Campbell : The core of that regime's army is provided by one of the PMCs under Liquid's control.

Solid Snake : What about the rebels?

Colonel Roy Campbell : The local militias have hired small numbers of operators as trainers and field commanders. And of course, they've got help from the local PMCs.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Right. A proxy war between hired guns.

Colonel Roy Campbell : Eh. PMC versus PMC. A quagmire of war. All too-typical victims of the new world economy. Snake, you'll be sneaking into the conflict zone via transport truck disguised as one of the rebel army's hired operators. Your first objective is to make contact with our informants, Rat Patrol Team Zero One. They'll be expecting you.

Solid Snake : Rat Patrol, huh. They sound sneaky.

Colonel Roy Campbell : They're a Special Forces team assigned to the Army's PMC investigation unit, CID.

Solid Snake : CID... The real rats of the Army.

Colonel Roy Campbell : No, I can vouch for them personally.

Solid Snake : Friends of yours?

Colonel Roy Campbell : You could say that. Transportation to the area will be provided under cover of a U.N. humanitarian aid mission with support from the U.S. military.

    [Sunny walks downstairs again]

Colonel Roy Campbell : From there on, though, you'll get no protection and no guarantees from anyone. And you must not leave behind any evidence of your involvement in the area, let alone that of the U.N.

[Otacon turns Sunny around, taps her on the shoulders and she starts walking back up the stairs]

Colonel Roy Campbell : If word of this ever leaked out, it would spark a global firestorm. Snake... will you do this for me? Will you terminate Liquid?

Solid Snake : [after a brief moment of silence]  I'm not like the PMCs. I don't need your money.

Colonel Roy Campbell : Thank you.

Solid Snake : But, if you're going to spark something, spark this.

[holds up his cigarette and both Campbell and Otacon shake their heads in dismay]

Solid Snake : Fine. I'll start my own fire.

  • Solid Snake : [codec call]  Otacon, what's wrong? Why are you calling me over there?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Huh? What are you talking about? I didn't say anything!

Solid Snake : It was you!

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I told you I didn't call you! This is no time for jokes! You're suppose to fighting Octopus, come on!

Solid Snake : I... Hey! Otacon...

  • Solid Snake : [codec call to Otacon, inside the trash]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Snake, where are you now?

    Solid Snake : Trash can.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : A trash can?

Solid Snake : Looks like this is where they dump their household trash.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Huh. How can you tell?

Solid Snake : Cause it's stinks in here... Bad. Leftovers for last dinner, probably.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Ewww, leftovers...

Solid Snake : And there's some... bugs crawling around on my face.

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Ewww...

Solid Snake : It feels like roaches. There's a whole bunch of them scurrying around.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [feels disgusted]  Ugh! Make sure you get the smell of them off you before coming back here!

Solid Snake : Yep. I'll see what I can do.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Ugh... seriously. Doesn't it make you sick?

Solid Snake : I'd crawl into a toilet if it kept me out of sight. Something crawling my leg...

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Ughhh... I can't even imagine! Ewww! You know, you might want to get out of there as soon as the coast is clear!

Solid Snake : Yeah... not a best place for a nap.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : No kidding...

  • Solid Snake : [act 2 Mission Briefing continued]  Or it could be a trap.

Colonel Roy Campbell : True, but even so, the payoff would greatly aid our efforts.

[Rosemary gives him a cup and begins to drink it]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I had Sunny trace the origin of Naomi's mail. The address is fake, but Sunny was able to track the message back through its proxies based on access date/time stamps and data transfer volumes. Apparently, the message originated from a server in South America. I wouldn't exactly call it a hundred percent credible, though.

Solid Snake : Colonel, where's Meryl?

Colonel Roy Campbell : I know she left the Middle East in pursuit of Liquid. I'm sure ARSOC is on to us by now. We can't chase that line too far.

Solid Snake : Huh. Which leaves Naomi as our only lead.

Colonel Roy Campbell : I've secured you landing clearance at El Dorado International Airport. You'll be acting as a U.N. inspector.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : South America... That's about twenty hours from here. Then, what's the plan?

Colonel Roy Campbell : I'll arrange for them to get you a 4x4. The location Naomi gave us, the PMC's base, is in a mountainous region surrounded by forests. Use the 4x4 to get as close as possible to the PMC's security perimeter. From there on, Snake, it'll be a solo sneaking mission.

    Rosemary : Roy...

[gives him a plate of food]

Colonel Roy Campbell : Heh. Thanks. The rebels are still pitched in battle against the PMCs. The commotion should help you slip into the facility unnoticed.

Solid Snake : Twenty hours until we land. Got it. I'll have a look at the documents.

    [Otacon nods]

Solid Snake : Maybe I'll even have a smoke while I still can.

  • Sunny : [during the Act 2 'Mission Briefing,' Sunny, once again, is cooking eggs on board the Nomad and begins to sing]  11... 23... 581321... 34... 55... 89... 144... 233... 377... 610987... 15... 97... 95... 84.

    [humming]

    Sunny : 34... 55... 89... 144.

[having finished the eggs, Sunny heads down and grunts as she's walking down the steps. She approaches Otacon and gives him the eggs]

Sunny : Um... Uncle Hal... Th-The eggs... They're done.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Thank you, Sunny.

Sunny : [gasps when Snake begins to wake up]  Snake!

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : So, back from the dead?

Solid Snake : [turns and looks at Sunny's burnt eggs]  I don't remember the sun being so flat.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [Sunny, feeling insulted, turns away]  Sorry. I'll dig in right away, Sunny.

    [Snake begins to cough]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : And would you make some for Snake, too?

    Sunny : Okay.

Solid Snake : Uh, hey... None for me, Sunny.

[Sunny walks back up the steps]

Solid Snake : How long was I out?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : The whole day.

Solid Snake : [grunts]  Someone saved my life.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Yeah. It could have been Meryl and her boys. Don't worry. They're doing fine.

Solid Snake : Liquid got away.

[gets up and coughs a bit more]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [holding Snake]  You okay?

Solid Snake : My body... just seized up all of a sudden. This isn't normal. It's not my joints or muscles.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : It looked like the PMC soldiers all went haywire en masse, too. I thought it might be a form of ADS, but I didn't detect any aberrations in the EM field. You were lucky. Some of those guys' hearts simply stopped.

Solid Snake : She was there. Naomi was at Liquid's side. Otacon, did you see her?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : No, but you're right. Naomi was there. I found traces of her DNA in that syringe you were holding.

    [hands Snake the syringe]

Solid Snake : So, it was Naomi. Why?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Here, let me show you something.

[sits down and types on his computer]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Right after it all happened, I got a video mail from Naomi. It was sent to my old address.

Sunny : [having made a second batch of burnt eggs, Sunny comes down and hands the dish to Snake]  U-Um... Here you go.

    [Snake takes the dish]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Thanks, Sunny. They're delicious.

Sunny : [picks up the dish she gave to Otacon before]  But... y-you haven't even eaten any.

    [Otacon takes back the dish]

Solid Snake : [puts down the dish]  Eh. We grownups have to watch our caloric intake, you know.

[picks up a cigarette that was on the dish]

Solid Snake : Eh, but thank you. I was lookin' for this.

Sunny : [stuttering]  Y-You're not watching your n-nicotine intake.

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Sunny!

[she walks back up the steps]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : You really hurt her feelings.

Solid Snake : Yeah? Why don't you teach her how to cook eggs, then?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Oh, like I know how to cook! Hey, check this out.

[types on his computer and the video mail from Naomi appears]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : The data's been quarantined, no viruses. The voiceprint matches Naomi's, and I'm fairly confident the video isn't digitally synthesized, either.

Naomi Hunter : [on the computer screen]  Snake, I'll make this quick. I'm in South America. I've been captured and forced to do research. It's Liquid. Liquid's goal is to seize control of SOP, the Sons of the Patriots system, that controls the soldiers. To do that, he needs to analyze the nanomachines' structure and find out how they communicate with one another. The nanomachines currently in use by militaries and PMCs are third generation, but their design is derived from that of the first generation. And the basic technology is still the same.

    Solid Snake : First generation?

Naomi Hunter : [on the computer screen]  I was the one who created the first generation. A nanomachine colony, part of which was FOXDIE. Nine years ago, at Shadow Moses... I injected it into your body, Snake. The technology used in FOXDIE was incorporated... inherited, really by SOP. That's why Liquid has me helping him hijack the system because I know how FOXDIE works.

[a sudden, loud breaking noise is heard]

Naomi Hunter : Please, you must rescue me. Liquid's found a loophole he can use to get in to the System.

    [more loud noises are heard]

Naomi Hunter : Preparations for his insurrection are nearly complete. There's no time to waste. Snake, hurry!

[another loud noise is heard and the video ends]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Naomi sent her location data in a separate file.

Solid Snake : [looking at Otacon's computer screen]  What the hell is that?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : It's a type of encrypted data. Sunny decoded it for us. Remember now?

[an image of a map appears]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : This is data from the Soliton Radar you used at Shadow Moses. I'm guessing Naomi wants us to know the message truly is from her. Sending the map data in Soliton Radar format... Pretty clever, and Mei Ling's helping us out from Hawaii.

Sunny : [from the steps]  The d-data she sent was 4-D sound data. I don't know how Soliton Radar works, but all I had to do was change the audio data into video data. It was easy. This Naomi lady seems pretty cool.

[walks back up and Otacon chuckles]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [hearing a beeping sound]  It's Campbell.

    [puts Campbell up on-screen]

Colonel Roy Campbell : Snake, as you'll recall, following the Shadow Moses incident nine years ago, Naomi was detained by the authorities. But, someone arranged for her escape.

Solid Snake : Yeah, I hear they added that to my rap sheet, too.

Colonel Roy Campbell : I suspect it was actually Liquid. He must have taken her prisoner himself and forced her to do research at his facility in South America. Chances are the location Naomi gave us is the site of Liquid's main base.

Solid Snake : But, there's no actual proof?

Colonel Roy Campbell : There's an ongoing skirmish between a new regime put into power by PMCs and a rebel army formed by remnants of the old one. The rebels have hired a small-scale local PMC of their own to stir things up. It's the quintessential example of a war economy market. The new regime is still in shambles, so it's really Pieuvre Armement, one of the PMCs under Outer Heaven control, that's calling the shots. You might say it's a perfect place for Liquid to make his haven.

  • Sunny : [during the 'Act 3 Mission Briefing,' Sunny once again is singing while cooking eggs on board the Nomad]  Argon... Boron... Silicon and neon... Ebrium... Fermium... Plutonium... Chlorine... Fluorine... Gallium and xenon... Thallium, strontium... Thorium...

    [starts humming]

Naomi Hunter : The trick is to keep the lid on.

[puts the lid on top of the pan]

Naomi Hunter : Now, let it cook for one minute. You like cooking, don't you? Good for you.

Sunny : This is my Sunny-side-up fortune telling. Um, when it turns out good, it means something good is gonna happen.

Naomi Hunter : Aha. So, that's why you don't cook them over easy.

[Sunny puts her spatula down and sets a time on her duck clock]

Naomi Hunter : But, the secret to good cooking is to keep who's going to eat it in mind.

    Sunny : Oh.

Naomi Hunter : [looks at a picture of Olga, Sunny's mother]  Oh... Is this your mother?

    Sunny : Yes.

Naomi Hunter : She's really beautiful.

    Sunny : [quietly]  Uh-huh.

Naomi Hunter : That tune you were humming... it's from the periodic table, isn't it?

    [clears her throat]

Naomi Hunter : Thorium, protactinium, uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium... Americium... Uh...

    Sunny : [and Naomi]  Curium.

    Naomi Hunter : Curium.

    Sunny : Curium.

Naomi Hunter : That's it. Curium!

[she and Sunny laugh, then Sunny stares at the blue flower in Naomi's pocket]

    Naomi Hunter : Oh, this?

    [takes out the flower]

    Naomi Hunter : May I?

[places it above Sunny's left ear]

    Naomi Hunter : There.

[turns and looks in a mirror]

Naomi Hunter : See, Sunny. Us girls have to look our best.

Sunny : Her name... was Olga.

    Naomi Hunter : Hmm?

    Sunny : My mother.

Naomi Hunter : Oh. I see.

[she and Sunny both gasp when the pan starts to sizzle]

Naomi Hunter : It's gonna burn.

[Sunny quickly takes the top off]

    Naomi Hunter : Hold on.

[holds Sunny's hand with the spatula and helps her lift the eggs out of the pan and onto a dish]

Naomi Hunter : And... there. Done!

    Sunny : Thanks.

Naomi Hunter : Of course. We did a great job.

[the timer on the duck clock goes off and both Sunny and Naomi laugh; Sunny is then heard typing on a computer and Naomi is typing on another]

Naomi Hunter : Dr. Emmerich, Liquid is in Eastern Europe. He's after the corpse of Big Boss.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [holding his laptop]  Huh? What for?

Naomi Hunter : It's the final key he needs to gain access to SOP. The keys to the System are Big Boss' genetic code and bio-metric data. Without them, there's no way to gain access.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Wait. What's Liquid been doing all this time?

Naomi Hunter : [brings up some pictures on-screen]  He's been performing tests. Two tests. The first, using the genetic code from Liquid's DNA chip. In his second attempt, he used the DNA code and bio-metric data extracted from Snake's blood.

Solid Snake : [from upstairs, smoking a cigarette]  What's the need for the original if a substitute works just as well?

Naomi Hunter : Neither your genetic pattern nor Liquid's genetic pattern is a one-hundred percent match for Big Boss'.

Solid Snake : [coughs]  What do you mean we don't match?

    [starts walking down the steps]

Naomi Hunter : Dr. Emmerich... scientifically speaking...

    [bringing up more pictures on-screen]

Naomi Hunter : ... there's the markers implanted during the cloning process, the mixing of mitochondrial DNA within the egg cell, the intentionally altered terminate...

    [Snakes coughs again]

Naomi Hunter : ... terminator genes. Scientifically speaking. Both you and Liquid are as similar to Big Boss as you could possibly be. But, you're still different.

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Different?

    Naomi Hunter : Yes.

Solid Snake : So, that's what Liquid was talking about?

Liquid Ocelot : [from the first mission]  We're not copies of our father, after all!

Naomi Hunter : Which is why they created Solidus.

Solid Snake : But, Solidus is dead.

Naomi Hunter : Listen carefully, Snake. This is the most important part. The AI that controls the System employs a highly aggressive, advanced IDS. It uses a special code to inspect all data and commands circulating within the network. Any data that fails to conform to that code is treated as a foreign object and expunged, like viruses killed by white blood cells. The authentication program this IDS uses is based on a genetic identification program... one I helped develop for FOXDIE. It's set up so that host commands only execute properly if the key matches perfectly. However... if the IDS suspects someone is trying to break into the System, it registers that genetic code on a blacklist. That code is then blocked, and can never again be used to access the System. So, if you're going to use a substitute, you need to find a new genetic access code with each new trial.

Solid Snake : So, when Liquid accessed the System in the Middle East and South America, it was only a test.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I can't believe this. Snake and Big Boss don't have the same genetic code?

Naomi Hunter : [holding Otacon's hand]  Strictly speaking, Snake and Liquid aren't the same, either. Which is why FOXDIE only affected Liquid at Shadow Moses... and spared you. Let's put it this way. If Liquid uses Big Boss' genetic code, the original, he'll have the System completely under his control.

Solid Snake : Hold on. I thought having his code wasn't enough. You need his bio-metric data at the same time, don't you?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : That's right! And Big Boss is already dead.

  • Naomi Hunter : [act 3 Mission Briefing continued]  No. He's alive.

Solid Snake : Big Boss is... alive?

Naomi Hunter : His body is. Or rather, his cells.

    Solid Snake : That's impossible!

Naomi Hunter : Big Boss survives as a biomort, a brain-dead shell sustained in a lab.

    [Snake sits down beside Raiden]

Naomi Hunter : Liquid has already left for Europe in search of Big Boss' body. Right from the start, he knew his experiment in South America wasn't going to work.

    Solid Snake : Europe, huh?

Vamp : [from the end of the second mission]  The test was a failure, even with his code.

Liquid Ocelot : [from the end of the second mission]  As I feared, it's not pure enough. We need all of him.

Vamp : [from the end of the second mission]  Our only remaining option is to secure the original.

Naomi Hunter : If Liquid obtains the body, he'll be primed to make his final move.

Solid Snake : Allowing him total control of the System.

Naomi Hunter : Exactly. Unless we can stop him first.

[Raiden, lying down, begins to breathe roughly and white-colored blood starts seeping out of his body]

Sunny : Uncle Hal, I found it!

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Huh? Ah. This is it.

Solid Snake : Where'd you hack this from?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : AT Security. The Patriots.

Naomi Hunter : I can't believe this sort of thing still goes on.

[Sunny snatches a cigarette from Snake's mouth]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : The war economy is heating up the R&D race.

[Snake takes the cigarette back from Sunny]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : It's not just the PMCs, either. Every corporation tethered to the military-industrial complex is losing its sense of morality. And it's us science-holics who are doing their dirty work for them, not even realizing it.

Sunny : Can we make Jack better?

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I don't know.

Naomi Hunter : Sunny. May I?

[Sunny gets up from her chair; Naomi sits down in it and types on the computer]

Naomi Hunter : It's no use. There's nothing we can do here.

Sunny : Hmm? What do you mean?

Naomi Hunter : Look at this.

[gets up from the chair and Sunny sits it in again]

Naomi Hunter : His artificial blood needs dialysis. We don't have the proper equipment.

    Sunny : Dialysis?

Naomi Hunter : Getting his wounds healed is important, too. But, at this rate, he's not gonna last that long.

Sunny : Dialysis... is that like what k-kidneys do?

Naomi Hunter : That's right. Raiden's blood is an older type of artificial blood that was used by the military called white blood. After it's been in use for a while, the blood needs to be dialyzed, filtered. Right now, he's slipping into auto-toxemia.

[Sunny gasps and starts typing on the computer]

Raiden : [breathing roughly]  It's there... In Europe.

Naomi Hunter : What do you mean?

Raiden : Eastern Europe. They have equipment that can heal me there.

Solid Snake : Where? The same place Liquid went?

    Raiden : Dr. Madnar.

    [Naomi helps raise him up]

Raiden : He saved my life.

    [falls back down, unconscious]

Naomi Hunter : Dr. Madnar. I've heard of him.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : A world-renowned cybernetics expert. Strictly underground, though.

Naomi Hunter : We're in luck, then. It's settled. We must head for Europe. The sooner we get there, the better.

    [grabs Otacon's hand]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I'll call Campbell and have him get us landing clearance. Oh. Snake, where're you going?

Solid Snake : Well, I'm gonna be spewing out poison soon enough anyway. What's one more smoke gonna hurt?

    Sunny : Uh-uh!

    [takes the cigarette]

    Sunny : This is a no-smoking flight!

  • Rosemary : What's up Snake?

Solid Snake : Got an update for me?

Rosemary : There doesn't seem to be any problem with your psyche. So far, so good. Proceed with the mission.

    Solid Snake : Got it.

Colonel Roy Campbell : Speaking of food Snake... .

Solid Snake : Colonel? We're... .in the middle of something here.

Colonel Roy Campbell : Have you ever eaten rations from a country other than the U.S.?

Solid Snake : Of course I have.

Colonel Roy Campbell : The U.N. recently held a ration swap meet between military attachés of each member state. It was a momentous development in the cultivation and understanding of other countries cuisines.

Rosemary : Roy this isn't really the time... ..

Colonel Roy Campbell : On the contrary, I want you to hear this too Rose.

    Rosemary : I've already heard it a hundred... .

Colonel Roy Campbell : You'll survive. Anyway Snake, I did a taste test and found out that French rations were generally the best. The Italians weren't bad either. And the Japanese stuff was much better than I expected.

Solid Snake : Really? That's... .wonderful.

Colonel Roy Campbell : But everyone seem to agree that the worst rations of all were ours. America for the win.

Solid Snake : Alright, so what's your point?

Colonel Roy Campbell : Yep. It must be nice to live in a country that knows how to cook. Those French rations... ..delicieaux! I wish you could've been there to try some Snake. Oh, and you too Rose.

Solid Snake : Colonel, what exactly are you......

Colonel Roy Campbell : Some of the best food I've ever tasted Rose!

Rosemary : I'm sorry Snake, but ever since he went to that swap meet that's all he can talk about. You think he never had a decent meal in his life.

Solid Snake : Yeah no kidding. Wait a second. Rose, who does the cooking at your house?

Rosemary : Me! Roy doesn't... .what are you getting at?

Solid Snake : Nothing. Nevermind. Colonel?

    Colonel Roy Campbell : Hm?

    Solid Snake : My sympathies.

Colonel Roy Campbell : It's appreciated Snake.

Rosemary : I actually like those American rations!

  • Rosemary : I don't know much about motorcycles, but it's clear Big Mama's amazingly talented with that bike. It's like danger doesn't even register with her. One false move though and you're both done for.

Solid Snake : That's part of the thrill.

Rosemary : She may be affected by what's known as "riders high".

Solid Snake : I've heard of runners high.

Rosemary : It's a similar phenomenon. Beta endorphins are secreted inside the brain while you run, creating a feeling of intoxication. In other words, a psychological high.

Solid Snake : Right I've heard of that.

Rosemary : Some motorcyclists have also reported experiencing the same kind of sensation. It hasn't yet been confirmed psychologically, but that kind of high can make you oblivious to danger. Maybe that's why she's riding like nothing can stop her.

Solid Snake : Hmmm sounds like a combat high. Kinda wish I wasn't riding shotgun though.

Rosemary : In a combat high, your brain overdoses on adrenaline. Not endorphins. But don't worry Snake from what I can tell she's got skills and... ..she deserves your faith.

  • Otacon : Hey Snake, something I've been meaning to ask you. That canyon. Isn't that where you demolished Raven's tank? How'd you do it anyway?

Solid Snake : How? Hmmmm. Err... ..well... .grenades.

Otacon : That's it? You didn't use an anti-tank missle or something?

Solid Snake : Didn't have one.

Otacon : Hmmmm your technique is kinda... .I don't know. Archaic when it comes to fighting tanks. Honestly I don't think it'd work on todays main battle tanks.

Solid Snake : Well that's how I did it. What do you want me to say? You know. I asked an active duty army officer once. If an infantryman had to take on a tank one on one, how should he do it?

Solid Snake : And? What was his answer?

Otacon : Don't. He swore there was no in hell a single infantryman could take down a tank by himself.

    Solid Snake : Hmmmmmm. Interesting.

Otacon : I always suspected there was a little something crazy about you Snake. But hearing that story... ..now I know it. You're nuts! Single-handedly taking down a tank? That's crazy! You're insane!

Solid Snake : Otacon is this your idea of a compliment?

Otacon : Yes! You're the toughest, craziest, most hardcore bad-ass on the planet. You're... ..the shit!

  • EVA : It was you, not I, who was created from the rib of man. But I gave you life. I am your mother.

    Solid Snake : What?

EVA : Les enfants terribles. You cant grow a human being in a test tube. Not even a clone. You need a woman's body to give it life.

Solid Snake : You mean... a surrogate mother?

EVA : That's an awfully cold way to put it. I am your mother.

  • Solid Snake : [after crawling into a trash dumpster, then using the codec to contact Otacon]  I'd crawl into a toilet if it kept me out of sight.
