After their Internet sci-fi sensation Prey Alone caught the attention of Luc Besson and EuropaCorp, Irish directors James Mather and Stephen St. Leger got the leverage they needed to take on a larger-scale project — resulting in the thriller Lockout. The film’s story centers on a future experimental prison in space where 500 of Earth’s most dangerous convicts are kept in an artificial state of hibernation. When the president’s daughter, Emilie Warnock (Maggie Grace), leads a humanitarian expedition to the prison and the inmates are awoken, the ensuing mutiny has the first daughter at the center of a hostage situation. Early this week, Brad Bird confirmed, via an interview with Crave, what many had long assumed: despite "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" being the most successful entry in the franchise to date, the Pixar veteran will not be returning for another crack at the Tom Cruise-led spy series, saying that, "I think that one of the things that’s fun about the series is that they always pull in a different director and try to get a different kind of take on the premise."
With Paramount keen to get the balling rolling on the next entry after the $700 million success of 'Ghost Protocol' -- and hoping to avoid the five year gap between the last couple of movies -- it likely won't be long before the search for a helmer begins in earnest. Of course, Paramount may not have much say in the hiring of the director: Cruise has always led this series,...

Audiences have a strong awareness of Guy Pearce, but are they ready to see him as an action hero? In “Lockout,” Pearce plays disgraced special agent Snow, forced on a suicide mission to rescue the President’s daughter from a riot happening outside of the Earth’s atmosphere in the middle of a dangerous space prison. But while Pearce’s wisecracking Snow gives and receives his share of punches, the actor wasn’t entirely certain at first that this would be an action-heavy role.
“I didn’t see a genre-oriented film, I just saw this interesting story,” Pearce told us in an interview this week. “And [Luc Besson] said, the guys [directors Steven St. Leger and James Mather] are keen to have him be humorous. He’s a bit of a smart-aleck. And I said, 'Oh, okay.' So I walked away with the script, had a read and thought, this is actually quite funny. This wasn’t what I pictured.

I have to admit that this one came out of nowhere for me, and having watched the very enjoyable trailer the premise of Lock-Out still seems a little out there.
Luc Besson is in place as the film’s Executive Producer and we have James Mather and Stephen St. Leger sharing the writing and directing duties. previously the pair collaborated on a 2004 short called Prey Alone.
Here is what’s in store:

Guy Pearce, Peter Stormare and Maggie Grace head up this and ComingSoon had the trailer for all to see.
There are a few influences felt here with Zoic’s work on Joss Whedon’s Serenity leaping to mind as the space battles are teased here,...

A new film distribution company called FilmDistrict has snatched up the rights to the new sci-fi adventure film Lookout, starring Guy Pearce (Memento), Maggie Grace (Taken), James Mather, Peter Stormare and Tom Hollander.
The movie is being directed by first time feature film director Stephen St. Leger, from a script co-written with Luc Besson (The Professional), who also serves as the producer on the project. St. Leger previously directed a pretty cool short film called Prey Alone.
Lockout is set in the near future, and follows a falsely convicted ex-government agent (Pearce), whose one chance at obtaining freedom lies in the dangerous mission of rescuing the President's daughter (Grace) from rioting convicts at an outer space maximum security prison.
Now, can someone please tell me what in the hell is the Presidents daughter doing at a maximum security prison in outer space? Is this the kind of trouble our kids...

It's a military euphemism for insanity, hovering around the A-Team's Murdoch and the dreamed-of goal of Mash's cross-dressing Corporal Klinger. It means you're mentally unfit for service. But in the hands of Luc Besson, Section 8 is also a space prison full of lunatic convicts, orbiting 50 miles above the Earth.A 3D sci-fi action film, Section 8 is being set up at Besson's Europacorp studio in France. He'll produce, with Irish duo Stephen St Leger and James Mather directing. Producer and directors have all collaborated on the script. Mather and St Leger made the awesome 15 minute short Prey Alone (which you can watch in full here), and will do extensive FX prep on Section 8 over the next few months, before starting principal photography in the early summer. It's an English-language film with a projected budget of $30m, and Hollywood distributors are apparently already sniffing around for the worldwide rights.

This has been a very busy film news day. So busy there was some stories that made the typical below the fold, meaning they didn’t deserve individual time consuming posts but we thought you should read them.
First up, writer/director, Chase Palmer will be rewriting the script for Dune that Pierre Morel is directing for Paramount. Morel came aboard the project at the beginning of 2010 after Peter Berg left. Palmer plans to work Morel’s ideas into initial writer Josh Zetumer’s screenplay. Morel has come out and said that he plans on staying close to Frank Herbert’s classic 1965 sci-fi novel.
Secondly, eRc Box Office is reporting that The Losers will move to a summer release slot on June 4 instead of opening on April 9.
In world news, Luc Besson and his Europa Corp film are heading out of this world for his new new sci-fi film entitled Section 8.

This great 15-minute action movie proves that independent shorts don't always have to feature two people talking in an apartment. Shot in only 4 days entirely in front of a green screen, Prey Alone exemplifies the smart way to utilize computer graphics in the absence of a big budget. With only a few actors and a handful of props, writer/directors Stephen St. Leger and James Mather told the high octane story of a fugitive who keeps evading the government. As the furious action unfolds, an interrogation between an inmate and an Nsa agent reveals the true nature of the film's setting. Hint: the title is an anagram of the twist.

Stephen St. Leger and James Mather have found their way to The Lost Squad, coming on board to write and direct the project for Rogue Pictures. Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter are producing.
Squad is based on a Devil's Due comic written by Chris Kirby and drawn by Alan Robinson. The miniseries revolved around the supernatural action-adventures of a squad of U.S. soldiers who take on weird missions during World War II, fighting Adolf Hitler's occult agents and other threats.
Devil's Due Josh Blaylock is co-producing.
Andrew Rona, Andrew Deutschman and Alex Heineman will oversee.
The duo, known and Saint & Mather, are based in Ireland; St. Leger is a commercial director, Mather is a director of photography. The pair are riding into Hollywood on buzz created by Prey Alone, a high-octane 15-minute short they made digitally using actors and some hand props. It is that technique, similar to the fashion of how "300" was made, that they plan to use in making Squad.
St. Leger and Mather are repped by WMA.
