Sex & Nudity

  • Several of the alien guns have a phallic design.
  • Rouge wears suggestive clothing, revealing some cleavage.

Violence & Gore

  • Somewhat average Sonic the Hedgehog violence with guns this time around. Though one major difference is that most of the enemies are living creatures. While the humans presumably just get knocked out, the creatures clearly die when defeated.
  • There is a lot of offscreen and implied violence, including a young girl getting shot. In certain scenarios, a city gets blown up and in one scenario, Shadow implies that he's going to blow up the whole planet.

Profanity

  • There is surprisingly a large amount of swearing for a Sonic game, and may catch some players off guard.
  • During gameplay, Shadow says "Damn it!" every other time he gets hit. If he dies, he may sometimes say "Damn, not here!". Shadow also says this phrase every time he falls down a bottomless pit.
  • "Prick" is used once.
  • There are frequent uses of "damn", and "hell".
  • In one scene, Sonic says "Damn, they got away! I'll chase them".
  • There are lots of uses of the word "damn", 2 "hells" in cutscenes. Originally going to include the word "piss" but was replaced with "tick". During gameplay, the word "damn" is thrown around very liberally. One song that plays, "Almost Dead", contains the lyrics "Heaven can't save us and hell is a joke", which may be offensive to some viewers.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • This is a much more mature Sonic the Hedgehog game. Darker themes are to the extreme, and these themes may be unsettling or scary to younger players.
  • A young girl gets shot off screen in a flashback sequence.
  • Some of the aliens you fight may be a little unsettling to younger players, especially Black Doom.
  • Certain endings and cutscenes imply very dark fates for characters and even the world at large. One mission has Shadow attempt to assassinate the president. The alien's true plan for humanity is fairly gruesome, something that wouldn't seem out of place in an R rated horror film if it actually showed what would happen. Seeing several characters paralyzed may be frightening for some younger players.
  • This is considered one of the darker Sonic games, for the very intense and dark themes.

Spoilers

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Depending on the choices you make in the game, the final boss may be against Sonic himself as he attempts to stop Shadow for the greater good. After the boss, Sonic is shown weakly lying on the floor defeated, as Shadow laughs evilly at him and announces his evil intentions. While none of the endings with Sonic defeated are the true ending to the game, it still may frighten and upset younger players to see Sonic lose and the evil side win.
  • Depending on the choices you make during the game, there is a cutscene that ends with Shadow karate chopping Dr. Eggman in the face, though this is offscreen. A crunch is heard as the screen goes black. Shadow says "goodbye doctor" when he does this, and this may be implying that he killed him. This however isn't the final outcome, though it is very dark and intense.
