A 140 minute metaphysical head-trip!
tribeca100133 May 2007
I caught a DVD screener of this film, a festival entry that was being passed around. What a weird movie! A 140 minute metaphysical head-trip! I could follow most of the stuff as it was happening, but I never knew what to expect next. It kept me guessing all the while. When the film was finally over, I thought I had it all figured out, but when I was about to describe it to a friend, it became clear to me that I didn't know a thing about it. I mean, I couldn't put it into words... but, in my mind, I still thought I "got it". Which brings me to my point. This movie can't be described. Like the best art, it has to be experienced. For all of you who have an opportunity to see it, I hope you have the benefit of a pause and rewind button ;) Some of the dialog is like a logical vortex and needs to be unraveled for the ensuing plot to make any sense, or at least to appear to make sense ;) Anyway, it's surrealism at its finest!

After watching Sandcastles and Dustclouds...
filmreview0827 June 2009
I just watched Dustclouds... after watching Sandcastles earlier in the day. Well this has been the movie highlight of the decade for me. So I ask myself (of course knowing full well the answer - but I'm stupid and keep asking) I ask myself why isn't Filip Jan Rymsza being hailed from coast to coast as a genius in film making? If "Insert name of generic Hollywood film part 3" is making hundreds of millions of $$$ then this guy should have enough money to buy his own island. Of course the world doesn't work that way.

I wish I could say more but I'm pretty dumbfounded by the experience. Normally I'll mentally pick a film apart during or after viewing. Dustclouds was way too smooth for this - I didn't want to and ruin it.

I watch many films and it's rare that I really get into one this much. To be honest I haven't had this reaction while watching Bergman's films and they always blow me away.
