Jacques Audiard Wouldn’t Mind Being Crushed by the Contents of the Criterion Closet — Watch His Visit
Image
“I feel like this will all close in on me and I’ll disappear, which wouldn’t be such a bad fate, actually,” said “Emilia Pérez” writer/director Jacques Audiard as he surveyed the contents of the Criterion Closet.

The French filmmaker has been on a hot streak lately with his gonzo crime musical sweeping the European Film Awards last month and this month earning Outstanding Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, as well as Outstanding Motion Picture – Non-English Language, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, and Outstanding Original Song for “El Mal.” To celebrate these wins and potential Oscar fortune, Audiard took a brief trip off the red carpet to Criterion’s offices in New York City, where he selected a bagful of cinema’s finest, including Fritz Lang’s expressionistic serial-killer thriller starring Peter Lorre, “M.”

“For me, Lang is synonymous with silent films, even...

Image
Netflixs latest sci-fi horror film Time Cut has entered the streaming service's Global Top 10. Directed by Hannah MacPherson, the sci-fi slasher stars Outer Banks Madison Bailey alongside Antonia Gentry and Griffin Gluck. The story follows Lucy (Bailey), a young woman who travels back to 2003, where she attempts to save her older sister from a masked killer, the Sweetly Slasher.

Netflix recently released their weekly Global Top 10, with Time Cut sitting amply at number 2, just under Don't Move and above Hijack '93. Despite a low Rotten Tomatoes score of 19%, the film has gained significant viewership across multiple countries, demonstrating the strong draw of the horror genre on the platform. The slasher movie accumulated 35,100,000 hours viewed in under one week since its streaming release.

Dexters Earliest Kills Were Already Shown On-Screen, 16 Years Before The Prequel Show Releases
Image
Dexter: Original Sin will explore Dexter's earliest kills before the original series, but another Dexter show already depicted some of them. Dexter Early Cuts followed Dexter's kills as a young adult before the original show began, but Original Sin likely won't maintain its continuity. Original Sin could still borrow some of the best features from Early Cuts, like its answers to questions like how Dexter started taking blood slides.

Dexter Morgan's life as a young adult and his earliest kills are set to be depicted in the upcoming prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, but the serial killer's first victims were already shown on-screen back in 2009. Dexter killed hundreds of people, and his list of victims will only increase. Two new Dexter shows have been announced: a prequel series titled Dexter: Original Sin and a sequel titled Dexter: Resurrection. While Resurrection is set to explore Dexter's life after...

Netflix Has Reportedly Canceled One of Zack Snyder’s Franchises
Image
Anybody who has watched even one Zack Snyder film will tell you that the director approaches his work in a very particular and, to put it mildly, unusual way. Snyder leaves his viewers with polarized feelings – some see him as a visionary, while others see him as a failure – but never without a reaction. Although he has directed some of the most famous comic book films ever, he has also produced a number of egregious missteps.

Snyder has a certain approach as a director. His movies are dark and gritty, but they can also be campy and exaggerated, which is difficult to achieve because dark and gritty don’t usually go well with campy. And while he’s had a certain reputation until recently, his most recent project – Rebel Moon – was a complete disaster and it seems that the director is starting to feel the consequences.

As you probably know,...

The Rebel Moon director’s cuts are a lesson in how not to start a franchise

Severin’s Summer Sale – Full Lineup of New Releases Includes Dario Argento’s ‘Opera’ & More
Image
Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…

Opera

In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

Luckily, for Elise, she will have Bowie, the only sane cartoon character left, along for the ride.

‘Rebel Moon – Part One: Director’s Cut’ Rated “R” for Brutal Bloody Violence & Graphic Nudity
Image
Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic Rebel Moon is now streaming in full on Netflix, with last year’s Part One: A Child of Fire followed by this year’s Part Two: The Scargiver.

But the Rebel Moon saga is far from over, because Zack Snyder’s Director’s Cuts of both movies are coming to Netflix. And they’re said to each be around One Hour Longer.

Of particular note, the Rebel Moon Director’s Cuts will be rated “R,” promising the bloody violence that wasn’t found in the PG-13 versions of the two movies currently on Netflix.

For starters, Rebel Moon – Part One: Director’s Cut has been rated “R” for…

“Brutal bloody violence and gore, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.”

We don’t yet have a release date for these Director’s Cuts. Stay tuned.

From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel,...

Rebel Moon Part One's Snyder Cut Officially Earns R Rating
Image
Alternate cuts of the Rebel Moon movies will be dropping on Netflix in the summer, and the rating has been given to the first of the two Snyder Cuts. It also seems pretty clear that Snyder has earned the R rating with why the MPAA has labeled the movie as such.

Officially, Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire's director's cut has been rated R. This is for "brutal bloody violence and gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language." This implies much harder content than seen in the previously released version, which was rated PG-13 for "strong violence, sexual assault, bloody images, language, sexual material and partial nudity." The Snyder Cut version of The Scargiver hasn't been officially rated just yet, but is also expected to be given a hard R rating.

American Idol Introduces ‘Arena’ Format for Hollywood Week: Who Survived the ‘Biggest Cuts’ Ever?
Image
The judges had their work cut out for them on Sunday’s American Idol, which kicked off Hollywood Week with the introduction of the “Idol Arena,” and ended with the biggest round of cuts in the franchise’s 22-season history.

Also referred to as the “gladiator’s pit” by Lionel Richie, the Idol Arena was essentially an enormous stage where each singer would perform at random, surrounded on all sides by their competitive peers. 143 singers have made it to Hollywood this season, but only 56 would remain at the end of the two-hour broadcast. For the mathematically challenged, that meant 87 hopefuls would have to be cut.

The Future Is Female at Locarno Pro as ‘Mother Vera,’ ‘No ifs or Buts,’ ‘Pas Ta Maman’ Scoop Awards
Image
It was a good day for female filmmakers – and documentaries – at Locarno Pro, with “Mother Vera” by Cécile Embleton and Alys Tomlinson winning the Creativity Media First Look Award on Sunday at Locarno’s pix-in-post competition, dedicated this year to the U.K.

Dedicated to a young Orthodox nun, “Mother Vera” shows her turbulent past and fragile future as she faces inner conflict after 20 years as a monastic.

“From the opening moments of this film, we were immediately drawn to the strikingly photographed stark portrait of a fascinating nun in Belarus who makes a journey to France,” said jurors Ava Cahen, Gaia Furrer and Eugene Hernandez.

The award covers post production services up to the value of €50,000. Laura Shacham produces “Mother Vera” for She Makes Productions.

“About six years ago, they were working together on Alice’s photographic project documenting Christian pilgrimage sites in Eastern Europe. They saw this striking woman,...

How to Find (& Kill) Sheepsquatch in Fallout 76
Image
Fallout 76 has no shortage of creatures, monsters, and other irradiated beings including one of the more powerful enemy creatures, the Sheepsquatch. The latest entry in the Fallout series features gargantuan abominations that make Deathclaws look like child’s play. The West Virginian wasteland provides the perfect backdrop for creatures based on local folklore and new creatures alike.

The Sheepsquatch seems to have stayed unchanged during the new transition to the Steel Reign update. As the name suggests, Sheepsquatch is a large, irradiated monster that look like a cross between a sheep and a sasquatch. These ten-foot-tall behemoths are very tough, and almost always must be attacked by a group of players. Although Sheepsquatch poses an extreme threat to all players, they can be defeated with the right tactics.

Due to the postponement of the 2022 Summer Olympics, World Taekwondo was not able to showcase in Tokyo as planned and so they tried out for “America’s Got Talent” instead. Hailing from South Korea and the United States, the large group of athletes specializes in the demonstration of the Korean martial art. Though they didn’t get to perform on the world’s biggest sports stage, World Taekwondo was able to earn themselves their own gold medal in the form of a Golden Buzzer given to them by Terry Crews who had “never, ever seen anything like this in [his] life.”

In their powerful audition on June 15, the group divided and conquered by showing a number of different “fight” sequences using the punching and kicking techniques of the martial art. Meghan Markle was destined to be a royal!

The 36-year-old actress and Prince Harry announced their engagement this week, and she will soon be by his side to work together on causes dear to their hearts.

Markle may be known for her role as Rachel Zane on Suits, but the brunette beauty has also been giving back to the community and fighting for women's rights long before her ties to Prince Harry and her expected soon-to-be royal duties.

Her humanitarian and philanthropic work began prior to her becoming an actress. It all began with her mother, Doria Ragland, who has a master's degree in social work and works as a psychotherapist. In an interview with Glamourearlier this year, Markle listed her mom as one of the women who changed her life.

"My mom's a yoga instructor, but she does social work, as well, and she works specifically with the geriatric community," she stated. "For me...

Wondering what Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has been up to these days? Apparently, he's breaking up fights at the barbershop. Our favorite 90s star, Alfonso Ribeiro, was getting his hair cut at In The Cuts, an L.A. babershop, when the fight broke out between two employees. According to sources, the employees started fighting about whether they should turn up to the TV or the radio. Compelling stuff.

Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990)
Ribeiro Is Heroic In Barbershop Bust-up
Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990)
The Fresh Prince Of Bel-air star Alfonso Ribeiro acted the part of the hero while getting a haircut earlier this week (begs01Aug11) after splitting up a fight between two stylists.

The actor, who played nerdy Carlton in the hit TV show, was getting a trim at In The Cuts in Los Angeles when an argument broke out between two employees.

The altercation turned nasty when the pair began to brawl, prompting Ribeiro to jump out of his seat mid-haircut and pull them apart to stop the fight, according to TMZ.com.

But a shaken Ribeiro reportedly refused to let the salon finish his cut, and hastily left the barbershop.

Laying Down the 'Law'
Though 15 years have passed since "L.A. Law" (1986–94) went off the air, Corbin Bernsen says he continues to be typecast as the vacant, philandering Arnie Becker. "In fact, it's assumed that's who I am," insists the 55-year-old Los Angeles–born actor. Until fairly recently, he adds, he was viewed as such a lightweight he couldn't even get a decent agent. "I finally said 'Screw it, I'll do my own thing,' " he says.Bernsen has now turned his talents to helming and starring in his own films. Among these are the horror thriller "Dead Air" and "Donna on Demand," which he also wrote and which pokes fun at his own 1980s celebrity image. Each is a kind of morality tale, he says. More recently, he wrapped "Rust," a faith-based flick he wrote, directed, and stars in; he's looking for distribution."A part of me looks at life from a dismal perspective,...

Rock, Lopez among UPN star powers
UPN is adding some star power to its lineup for next season, picking up two series toplined by Denise Richards and Shannen Doherty, a drama executive produced by Jennifer Lopez and starring Vanessa L. Williams and a comedy executive produced by Chris Rock. The network also stayed in the family with its series orders. While only 60% of its pilots were produced/co-produced by Viacom entities, all four of its series pickups -- the comedies Everybody Hates Chris and Love, Inc. and the dramas Sex, Lies & Secrets and South Beach -- hail from UPN's sibling studio Paramount Network Television. UPN is still finalizing its schedule, which will be unveiled to advertisers Thursday at Madison Square Garden in New York, but sources indicated that comedies Girlfriends, Half & Half, One on One and its freshman spinoff Cuts are looking good to return. There also was buzz Tuesday about a possible second-season pickup for Kevin Hill, UPN's acclaimed drama starring Taye Diggs that has been on the bubble after failing to gain traction with viewers.
