Mumbai, Feb 24 (Ians) Best known for her role Daya in the sitcom ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ (Tmkoc), Disha Vakani was seen performing an ‘Ashwamedh Yagya’ puja in Mumbai, along with her husband and two children.

The video doing the rounds on the Net shows Disha wearing a bright yellow saree and matching jewellery. Her husband Mayur Padia, who is a chartered accountant, is also in a yellow kurta and white pyjama.

The snippet shows Disha saying, “I am blessed and fortunate to perform this Ashwamedh Yagya. Shri Ram had performed this yagya. Bahut achche vibes hain. We have performed many Gayatri mantras on the sets of Tmkoc. This helps in improving the environment and gives birth to good thoughts in the minds of everyone.”

Mumbai, Aug 10 (Ians) Bollywood actor and humanitarian Sonu Sood helped a 65-year-old man from Bihar to help him clear his debts.

The man named Khilanand Jha travelled all the way to Mumbai only to meet Sonu, whom he fondly refers to as ‘Gareebo Ka Masiha’ or the Messiah of the Poor.

Jha’s story, riddled with struggles and financial burdens, touched Sonu’s heart, prompting him to lend him a helping hand.

For the unversed, Jha’s wife, Minoti Paswan, passed away earlier this year after a paralytic stroke, leaving him with a debt of Rs 12 lakh for her medical expenses. With creditors demanding the clearance of payment, he sought Sonu’s assistance after hearing about his efforts to help the less fortunate during the pandemic.

Jha, accompanied by his son, recently met Sonu at his office.

The actor empathised with the elderly man’s situation and readily agreed to offer him support.

Nitin Chandrakant Desai, the prominent Bollywood production designer of the Oscar-nominated music sports drama Lagaan, has died. He was 57.

Desai reportedly was found dead at his studio in Karat, near Mumbai. The Indian Express and other local news agencies have reported police initially are suspecting suicide. Investigations are continuing.

Desai was known for his colorful work on the 2001 blockbuster Lagaan and Devdas, the BAFTA-nominated Indian drama from a year later. During his long career he also worked on another Oscar-nominated feature, 1988’s Salaam Bombay!, and on 1942: A Love Story (1993), Hum Do De Choke Sanam (1999) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008), among others. According to Indian news agency Pti, local police suspect that Desai allegedly died of suicide, though they are investigating further.

During his distinguished career, Desai worked with Mira Nair on the Oscar-nominated “Salaam Bombay” (1988) and “Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love” (1996). Renowned filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker says he is in shock after learning about the death of art director Nitin Desai, who worked with him on the sets of his magnum opuses ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Jodhaa Akhbar’,

Desai was found hanging in a case of suspected suicide at his N.D. Studios here, early on Wednesday, official sources said.

Los Angeles, April 22 (Ians) The rights of three songs from iconic 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical ‘The Sound of Music’ have been acquired by Indian film ‘Music School’.

The cast includes Shriya Saran, Sharman Joshi and Prakash Raj in leading roles, in addition to debutant Ozu Barua and Gracy Goswamy in key roles. Benjamin Gilani, Suhasini Mulay, Mona Ambeognkar, Leela Samson, Bugs Bhargava, Vinay Varma, Sreekanth Iyengar, Vaquar Sheikh and Phani are also part of the cast.

Veteran Indian composer Ilaiyaraaja has recreated the songs along with the London Philharmonic Orchestra to suit the sensibilities of an Indian audience.

The musical was adapted as a 1965 film by Robert Wise, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which went on to win five Oscars and also had two live television adaptations – on NBC in 2013 and ITV in 2015, reports Variety.

Mumbai, March 16 (Ians) Punjabi actor Aman Dhaliwal, who has worked in the Bollywood film ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, has been attacked in a gym in the US.

A video doing the rounds on social media, shows the accused asking for water from people around while Aman is at knife point. Moments later, the actor finds the right moment, turns around and pins the accused to the ground. Others come running and do not let him escape.

According to media reports, the incident took place when Aman was exercising in the gym. The accused held a knife and threatened others.

Dhaliwal, who is currently hospitalised, has sustained injuries and scars on his torso, according to a report.

RSVP and Roy Kapur Films are thrilled to announce that the Oscar-winning maestro A.R. Rahman will be scoring the music for its upcoming film Pippa directed by Raja Krishna Menon and starring Ishaan Khattar, Mrunal Thakur, and Priyanshu Painyuli.

Pippa, the first-of-its-kind action-packed tank war film is based on the book The Burning Chaffees written by Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta. In this heroic battle film, Ishaan is set to take on the role of war veteran Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta of the 45th Cavalry tank squadron who, along with his siblings, fought on the eastern front during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, which led to the liberation of India’s neighbour Bangladesh.

The film’s unique title highlights the magnificent Russian amphibious war tank called the Pt-76, popularly and lovingly known as “Pippa”, like an empty ghee da dabba that smoothly floats on water, which is the celebrated army tank at the crux of the film.

India’s A.R. Rahman, the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Grammy winning composer of “Slumdog Millionaire” will score the music for upcoming war film “Pippa.” In doing so he teams up with two of India’s leading producers.

The film is produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP and Siddharth Roy Kapur’s Roy Kapur Films, and directed by Raja Krishna Menon (“Airlift”). It stars Ishaan Khattar (“A Suitable Boy”), Mrunal Thakur (“Love Sonia”) and Priyanshu Painyuli (“Mirzapur”).

“Pippa” is based on the book “The Burning Chaffees,” written by Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta. Khattar will play Brigadier Mehta of the 45th Cavalry tank squadron who fought on India’s eastern front during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.

Indian actress Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and Aaradhya, her daughter with Abhishek Bachchan, were announced Sunday as having tested positive for Covid-19.

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.

While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.

For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 819 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.

The 2020 class is 45% women, 36% underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 49% international from 68 countries. There are 75 Oscar® nominees, including 15 winners, and five recipients of Scientific and Technical Awards. When director Ashutosh Gowariker’s films come to mind you think of brilliant and moving stories, grand sets, and outstanding performances. From his Oscar award nominated film Lagaan, which starred Aamir Khan, to the impactful Swades featuring Shah Rukh Khan, and the Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai romantic epic Jodhaa Akbar amongst others, the director has brought exceptional Hindi films to audiences the world over.

Mr. Gowariker will be appearing at The London Indian Film Festival at a special “In Conversation” event where he will take a special look back at his career and give audiences a glimpse into the filmmaker’s process.

I was honored to speak with the director ahead of this exciting talk in London. In this special Skype video interview, we discussed movies, music and his passion for filmmaking. You can watch the full interview below, but here are some teasers!

Mr. Gowariker revealed during his talk in London that he will give audiences a behind-the-scenes look into making movies. “It will be about the genesis of an idea and how that idea goes through these various developmental stages.”

“Filmmaking is a collaborative art,” he says, “I am making movies. Telling stories. And it gives you a lot of satisfaction when you bring so many different visions together to tell your story. . . . It is something the audience can take back with them. Something that even five years later is left behind in your mind.”

Mr. Gowariker revealed that he does a lot of readings and discussions with his actors to get them into character, so that, “once they are on set it is just about capturing the emotion.”

Of course, we had to talk about the music of his movies, and he gave an in-depth answer about styles, language, working with Ar Rahman, Javed saab and how it all comes together. “It is quite an exciting process.” Adding praise for Rahman’s amazing work, “The take-off point is usually Rahman first because he is the guy who makes it exciting – makes the melody exciting; makes the sounds he is going to use new and fresh.”
