It was informative, but...
DrCharlesMontague3 April 2022
I was in high school in the early 2000's when this was on, and I'll give it credit for at least making the other ignorant people at school somewhat aware of what was going on in the world and generating some form of mature discussions at the lunch table, etc. HOWEVER, the shameless amount of advertising was outrageous, looking back now as an adult with a marketing degree. So, it was a mixed bag.

About the worst thing that could happen to any school.
PaulLyndeForTheBlock1 December 2005
I am so embarrassed that my school subscribes to this "news" show. Homeroom does not need to be twenty minutes long, and we certainly don't need this. If you don't have it, here it is in a nutshell. One to two minutes of real news, followed by two minutes of commercials, a filler news story, more commercials, and then either a "Pop Quiz" or a plug. That's the problem with CON(as I like to call it, note the acronym), there is too much advertising. Frequently, they even have a "guest anchor", who is just a celebrity plugging their latest CD, movie, etc. What bothers me the most is the teacher's attitudes towards. They almost seem to think it's sacrilege or some sort of mortal sin if you talk or ignore it. In fact, we've been threatened with detention for having the nerve to talk or ignore it in some way. I am sick of being figuratively being told to sit down and shut up so I can watch a TV program that tells me stuff I already know, and I'm sick of watching my classmates being told off for helping each other with homework, studying, or doing something that actually counts for a grade. When I am a parent, I will never send any of my children to a "Channel One School", if such a thing even exists by then.

I don't care for news networks, but this is the worst.
brandonmatzke-6981921 November 2016
If I could give any show a negative rating, it would be Channel One. I remember being forced to watch this disgusting pile of vomit disguised as a news network all the time at school: it was never good. Despite claiming that the show is "news for teens", it acts like everyone is a toddler with half a brain, explaining literally every tiny detail like we couldn't figure it out for ourselves. Everyone acts extremely bored, which begs the question of "If even the news anchors are sick of this, how is the population of U.S. Teens (the target audience) expected to watch it? Or care about it, for that matter? It also doesn't work as a News station: as an example, it was extremely biased during the 2016 election. Isn't the point of the news to give a non-biased look at current events? Channel One News is the worst way to introduce teens to current events. It's boring, overly simplified, and forgettable. If you are a teen (or the parent of one) who wants to get invested in the news, just watch anything else.

What a waste of time...
gemini_dog25 February 2007
I hated this. We was spoon feed this news source filled with ad for the military, Coke products, some Pop culture jackass plugging a movie, CD, concert, and teachers acting/believing that this is important. That 12 minutes could of be used for something more than watching TV like a few more minutes of class time, more time for lunch, more time to get to the next class, getting out of school 12 minutes early, or even meetings for teams/clubs/etc. I never cared to watched the news due to the fact it is always the same thing getting reported (Kids complaining about dress code, some war in a country, some pop star plugging a movie/CD/concert, some kind of competition to be on Channel one).

Absolutely The Biggest Piece Of Garbage To Ever See School!
DylanRoberts5118 June 2011
This is just a bunch of garbage such as: teen ads, bad movie previews, and of course the Week-In-Rap! They do tell you some descent stuff, but it's drowned out by My Teacher's gossiping because they barely even watch it, I don't blame Them!!! It had a film festival and I was going to submit it to them, it turned out TERRIBLE! But I still submitted it to them anyways! I just wish that my school would not subscribe to these junkies and give us 15 minute worth of extra school time where we can learn! That would be great! This is why complain about Channel One News constantly when it comes on!!! See ya when Ireview antoher thing next time!!!

Embarrassingly bad
TJOC7520 January 2022
I remember when this show first rolled out that the deal was they bought the TV's for the school and the school agreed to air this "news" program. I was in high school when this first aired and had been watching real news programs for years. I suppose this was to spoon feed bite sized amount of news to the preteen masses in an easily digestible manner. I was just embarrassed for them that it sucked so hard in its attempt to be hip. I still cringe when I see any of the reporters from this.

There from the beginning
bigdaddy-6011 September 2006
I have read a lot of comments for Channel One and I just wanted to add this:

I was there when the whole idea of having TVs in the classroom ever came about, and having Channel One as a news source geared toward teens & young people in hopes of getting them more involved and informed of the world around them.

Yes, at times it did seem corny. BUT, had it not been for Channel One (At least at my school), half the school would not have been as interested in the first Bush/Clinton elections. Debates were happening daily at our school and we even rounded it off with our own election. That was the first time I ever thought about voting and making myself heard. We also received first hand information on the Gulf War. Something no one thought (at the time) would ever happen.

It was also the first time that myself and other teens in our school ever thought about other countries and that atrosities there. This show made us think and realize that there is a whole other world out there that we need to be prepared for when we leave high school.

But at least Channel One tried to present the news to teens, not too many (if any) Corproate news broadcasts were ever gearing their stuff towards young people.

I do believe that Channel One was sponsored by MTV in the beginning. So they did have that kind of MTV look & Feel.

Some tidbits for you. These newscasters moved on to bigger and better things: Lisa Ling - The View; Anderson Cooper; Serena Atschul - MTV

So try not to blame Channel One too much for being corny, or playing annoying music. At least the original idea of presenting news to young people in (hopefully) ways they can relate to, was a noble one.

Try's too hard to be cool
Valerie478924 October 2005
This show is kinda weird. It tries too hard to be cool to young people who watch it during school. Also...whats up with Erroll Barnett accent? hes almost full black and talks with a strong English accent. I hate channel one and i'm glad it only is 12 minutes long every day. They assume that all teenagers watch the news which obviously isn't true. and the name channel one is probably the worst name for a teenagers news problem that I've heard in a really long time. If it was for me nobody would have to watch this even if it is only 12 minutes a day. If I could change the show I would change it so that the stories were easier to understand and that when they have feature stories they are a little more interesting. I have to give them credit for the fact that they do have some cool guest hosts and prizes to give away and that their reporters are always on the scene. Bottom line? Nix, nix
