Nils Gaup, behind Oscar-nominated “Pathfinder,’ intends to follow his latest film “The Riot” with a new documentary about shamanism.
Under the working title “Koven” and named after its protagonist, it will focus on a Sámi man whose ancestor was Norway’s biggest shaman.
“He is this extremely well-educated guy. A scientist, a sceptic. And then he experiences something he cannot explain. He thinks he is going crazy!,” Gaup tells Variety.
“He starts to study shamanism, still thinking he can get to the root of it all. But here is the thing: Unless you experience something like this yourself, you won’t believe it. It’s like falling in love. If you’ve never known love, you just don’t get why all these people are acting so strange,” he laughs.
Gaup, who is also Sámi, has already ventured into the unknown with his acclaimed debut “Pathfinder.”

If you thought supermarkets rushed the holidays on us, they’ve got nothing on Tubi. For the latest Tubi Original, they’ve skipped right past Christmas to give us Dante’s Hotel, a New Year’s Eve-themed horror film that begins on New Year’s Eve 1975 in the Dontene Hotel. Twelve years later it happens again and Daniel is there again. Both times however the bodies vanish before they can be taken to the morgue leaving Daniel a free, if very troubled man who has taken up permanent residence in Room 1224.

You may have noticed that there’s been a lot of talk about Lily Gladstone and her Indigenous heritage and what that fact will mean for her chances in the Academy Award Best Actress race as her epic feature “Killers of the Flower Moon” from director Martin Scorsese preps for liftoff in wide theatrical release this Friday (October 20). Gladstone is running a solid second place behind Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) in the Gold Derby combined Oscar odds for her much-praised performance as Osage Nation member Mollie Burkhart in the tragic fact-based saga.
Gladstone herself is of Blackfeet and Nimiipuu heritage and raised on a Blackfeet Nation reservation in Montana. One would presume this fact won’t work against the actress in 2024 as it might have in, say, 1954 or even ’74. And in fact it was only earlier this year that Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian actress to win Best Actress...

A slew of Sámi TV and film projects are in the works or due for release in 2023. At the North Pitch session at the Tromsø International Film Festival in northern Norway, the variety and quantity of projects in the pipeline was impressive. From the musical “Árru” to the love story “My Reindeerherder;” from documentaries to “Sámi Wedding – A Countdown to Disaster,” a four-part TV comedy, Sámi culture is attracting investment and distribution. Global players like Netflix are already on board with a feature “Stolen,” directed by Elle Márjá Eira due to start filming in the Spring.
This moment hasn’t come out of nowhere, Anna Lajla Utsi, the managing director of the Sámi Film Institute maintains: “It’s a result of many, many years of hard work from both us at the Film Institute, trying to raise the funding, and also creating partnerships with Norwegian broadcaster Nrk Drama, Netflix, Telefilm Canada,...

Before Karl Urban was in "The Boys," he played characters who love swords and shields as much as Billy Butcher loves killing supes. There's his role as Skurge in "Thor: Ragnarok" and as Éomer in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, as well as the box-office dud "Pathfinder" or any of his various appearances in the Riddick films as Vaako. The reason for Urban's casting in this niche probably has something to do with the two television series that make up a large part of his early career: "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and "Xena: Warrior Princess."
Although Urban first appeared in "Hercules" as Cupid in the season 3 episode "The Green Eyed Monster," he's better known for the recurring character Julius Caesar in the spin-off "Xena". The actor also played two other guest roles in "Xena": the father-drugging psychopath Mael and the nomadic human Kor.

Karl Urban has brought several seminal characters to life. Apart from playing the complex, unhinged role of Billy Butcher in "The Boys," Urban has been a part of several major franchises over the course of his career, including "Star Trek" and "The Lord of the Rings." Peter Jackson's 2002 film "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" was a breakout film for Urban, in which he played Éomer, a leader of the Riders of Rohan who went on to become the King of Rohan. Almost every scene featuring Éomer is battle-intensive, as his character is instrumental in the Battle of Helm's Deep. While one would think that "The Two Towers" would be one of the most challenging shooting experiences for Urban, the actor revealed in a 2007 interview with IGN that it was not the case.

More than 300 industry delegates from top shingles including Warner Bros Discovery, Viaplay, Germany’s Constantin Film, The Match Factory and France’s TF1 Studio are expected on the shores of Haugesund, Norway, over Aug. 23-26, for Scandinavia’s major film showcase, New Nordic Films.
Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” will both open the film confab festivities and screen alongside 18 new Nordic finished films at the market. But for the avid buyers and programmers of Nordic content, the biggest draw will be the 18 works in progress – half of them looking for sales and distribution – and 23 pics in development available for co-production and financing.
“We’ve noticed a shift in recent years, with buyers and sellers favouring the Works in Progress and Nordic Coproduction Market over the market screenings. These seem to be more valuable for the industry,” said Gyda Velvin Myklebust, head of New Nordic Films.

In an underground tomb, a man who should have been dead awakens in the dark, gradually regaining his senses—
He has forgotten his past, including his name. Given the great pains taken to insure his confinement, his revival may have been anticipated, but the remains of the grave robber that is his sole companion may give a clue as to his reawakening. When the corpse of the thief rises against him,...

Vikings don’t lack for precedent in the movies, yet the Old Norse boatmen have never quite taken hold in the collective filmgoer unconscious the same way as cowboys, pirates or mafiosi. The explanation may well be their inherent associations with paganism, cannibalism, rape and pillaging, traits understandably sanitized (if acknowledged at all) in late studio-era Viking narratives like Richard Fleischer’s The Vikings or Jack Cardiff’s The Long Ships. In 1984, Hrafn Gunnlaugsson—the supposed “bad boy” of Icelandic cinema—brought a pop-traditionalist sensibility to When The Raven Flies, which revisits Nordic mythology under the influence of spaghetti westerns, Kurosawa films and Dashiell Hammett’s Red Harvest. Gunnlaugsson’s stated aim was to make “the ultimate Viking movie”, and his trilogy deserves to be far better known; they are miniature epics, and the few outside of Scandinavia who know them probably have also heard them termed as “cod westerns.

“Images of a Nordic Drama,” the debut documentary by Oscar-nominated Norwegian director Nils Gaup, has debuted its teaser trailer, ahead of its international premiere at Hot Docs.
The film follows art collector Haakon Mehren who faces unexpected resistance while championing the work of an unknown Norwegian artist after finding a cache of paintings in a barn.
Despite success abroad, the undiscovered work of Aksel Waldemar Johannessen, a contemporary of Edvard Munch, takes nearly three decades to launch in Norway. The painter’s depictions of prostitutes and drunks living in miserable poverty offend the aesthetics of Norway’s art establishment and challenge the canon to the point of sabotaging his rediscovery.
Gaup said that he decided to make the film after visiting an Edvard Munch art exhibition in a museum in Vienna in 2009. “There I discovered some paintings by an unknown Norwegian artist – Aksel Waldemar Johannesen. I had never heard of...

Over the course of a celebrated 40-year career, veteran Danish editor Niels Pagh Andersen has worked on critically acclaimed films including Pirjo Honkasalo’s “The 3 Rooms of Melancholia” and Joshua Oppenheimer’s Oscar-nominated “The Act of Killing” and “The Look of Silence.”
One of the key takeaways from those collaborations, which he explores in his new book “Order in Chaos: Storytelling and Editing in Documentary Film,” is the importance of the creative synergy that forms between an editor and a filmmaker.
“The artistic vision is the director’s responsibility. But with the [editing] process, there I feel it’s also my responsibility that we get the best out of the two of us,” says Andersen, who gave a masterclass this week at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. “If you can have the creative dialogue, then you create something that is bigger than the individual.”

When it comes to fantasy shows and movies, you know you can expect epic battles and vast worldbuilding. More often than not, these stories tend to feel a bit too clean and planned out, making sure every part of the story makes sense while sometimes losing a human element to it. Likewise, in the pursuit of epic action, battle scenes tend to focus on flashy characters capable of killing tons of enemies singlehandedly without the need to stop or rest.

Apex Legends’ massive Season 11 “Escape” update arrives just as EA and Respawn’s battle royale looks to capitalize on Warzone’s complacency and make its move to claim the genre crown.
This update not only adds a new Legend to the game’s growing roster but reworks one of the game’s formerly bottom-tier Legends in such a way that could completely change the way you look at them. The result is one of the most chaotic and diverse competitive metas that we’ve seen in quite some time.
While Apex Legends’ Season 11 meta is nowhere close to being “solved,” here is our early look at the Legends prepared to dominate this new update and those that you’re better off ignoring until the next major patch drops.

Oscar-shortlisted Hope (Håp) hopes to become the sixth film from Norway (joining Arne Skouen’s Nine Lives; Nils Gaup’s Pathfinder; Berit Nesheim’s The Other Side of Sunday; Petter Næss’s Elling; Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg’s Kon-Tiki) to be nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in what is now called Best International Feature Film. When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.
Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

I could, and sometimes do, wax philosophical, intellectual, and academic about the Native films I enjoy. But that sort of analysis can get pretty boring, and saps what I love about movies. I watch to be entertained! I don’t necessarily want to ponder the state of my Native being when I’m just trying to watch stuff blow up on screen. I prefer bombast and popcorn. Put it this way: instead of seeing “Thunderheart” in theaters, I saw “Wayne’s World” a third time toward the end of its cinematic run.
Growing up when I did, I became a consumer byproduct of early MTV, HBO, and “Skinemax” access, of USA network action flicks and Nick at Night reruns. If I took note of Native cinema (or more accurately Natives In cinema) back then, it was when they weren’t being obviously Native: Graham Greene in “Die Hard with a Vengeance,...

As is standard whenever a new season rolls around, Respawn has taken the opportunity afforded by the tri-monthly refresh to make some much-needed changes to some of Apex Legends‘ underperforming characters.
The theme this time around, it seems, is the Scout class in general which, according to the developer, has fallen to the wayside somewhat as of late. A series of extensive adjustments to Pathfinder, Bloodhound and Crypto are par for the course this time around, then, but will they be enough to nudge any of the trio up existing tier lists? Given how long it takes for a new meta to be established following sizable updates such as these, it’s far too soon to make a decisive judgement, though on paper, at least, the tweaks certainly look promising.
Of the three, Pathfinder has received the smallest number of changes, with Respawn admitting that, in light of giving every Scout-based character access to beacons,...

As any Apex Legends worth their salt undoubtedly knows by now: loot is almost as important to success as innate skill.
Even if you’re the most reliable shot when it comes time to engage in frenzied skirmishes, if a member of the opposing team has a similar affinity for accuracy, the player left standing will almost always be the one with superior armor, a healthy supply of restoratives and best-in-class weapon attachments. That being the case, then, it’s not at all surprising that Apex‘s loot vaults – secure underground bunkers filled to bursting point with some of the best gear available – are often the first port of call for teams looking to get an early leg up on the competition.
Of course, were it that simple, the entire lobby in every match would immediately descend on the nearest vault to steal its contents, but only through the acquisition...

Today marks the release of Season 5 of Apex Legends, and with the update comes a bevy of huge changes to characters, guns, and gameplay mechanics that you’re really going to want to familiarize yourself with before jumping into King’s Canyon again. Let’s take a look at some of the most notable changes you need to know about.
Of course, one of the most important new additions to the game is the newest legend, Loba, who we’ve been learning about via trailers over the past few weeks. This new character will be very focused on loot, with a passive that allows her to view loot through walls and an ultimate that lets her teleport those items to other teammates. She’ll also have the ability to use her Jump Drive bracelet to teleport herself around the battlefield and gain access to all this shiny loot. All in all,...

In a game as complex and non-linear as Apex Legends, unintended bugs and glitches are almost inevitable.
In just over a year since the battle royale’s release, players have discovered several such oddities, some potentially game-breaking, others wholly humorous and harmless. Reddit user Bentrolei’s latest discovery somewhat straddles the invisible line between both, though definitely with an emphasis on the latter. Going about their usual business in World’s Edge as Pathfinder, Bentrolei decides to use one of the affable robot’s signature abilities in an attempt to get a leg-up on the competition.
Shortly after inserting the character’s hand into a beacon device – an act which allows Pathfinder to discern future locations of the ever-encroaching ring – the laws of physics, seemingly playing truant, are broken, leading to what can only be described as an unconventional means of travel. You can check out the bizarre occurrence for yourselves via Reddit.

The next addition to Apex Legends‘ highly sought after Heirloom items could be arriving soon, new leaks suggest.
For those unaware, the term refers to special cosmetic-only overrides for a specific character, usually taking the form of an override for any individual Legend’s melee attack. Just one of these – Wraith’s Kunai – was available at launch as an extremely rare drop from Apex Packs, though Respawn has since introduced several others. Lifeline, Pathfinder and Bloodhound have all received their own Heirloom items over the last 12 months, most of which were only available for a brief period in limited-time events.
The expectation, then, is that the studio will eventually get around to releasing one such trinket for every existing and future Legend as time goes on, and it appears as if the next in line to receive theirs has been revealed ahead of schedule.

Humans aren’t the only living beings currently milling about in World’s Edge, it would seem.
Apex Legends Season 4 finally kicked off last week, bringing with it bunch of new content, though one feature that’s remained somewhat the same is the battle royale’s map. Unlike Season 3, Respawn opted to keep the action in World’s Edge for the second season running, though not without first making some major landscape changes. Besides the addition of a colossal Planet Harvester at the map’s epicenter, several existing townships and hamlets have received their own makeovers, with Capitol City, in particular, having been split right down the middle as a result of Hammond Robotics’ new mining operation.
Now that players have had time to acclimatize themselves to World’s Edge’s new layout, however, some believe they’ve spotted what appears to be a pack of roaming wolves skittering about the concrete jungle.

Tabletop roleplaying games have recently grown in mainstream popularity due to many factors. The increase in popularity of board games, rise of Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites, and inclusion in mainstream entertainment - like Stranger Things - have all given a breath of fresh air to the world of tabletop RPGs. This has helped bring some anticipated new games to the shelf, and few have hit our radar quite like the upcoming Alien: The Roleplaying Game from Free League Publishing.
Players will create characters in the universe of the Alien film franchise - blue collar workers just trying to earn their keep and stay alive in a cutthroat universe of both literal and corporate monsters. The game is based on the “Year Zero” RPG system, which is used in other popular RPGs like Mutant: Year Zero and Tales from the Loop. This system only uses a variety of six-sided dice,...

Snow, sleighs and Santa himself will soon be making their way to Apex Legends, it appears.
For Respawn, this particular Christmas will be a special one indeed as the battle royale’s first and it goes without saying that the developer will want to make this year’s festive season one to remember. Not just for itself, but the millions of players that regularly drop in for a session or two of competitive fun in World’s Edge. As for how it plans to close out 2019 with a bang, the studio has yet to say, though in the absence of any official word, data miners going about their usual business have unearthed a number of goodies.
A stocking overflowing with new skins, Gun Charms and other cosmetics have been discovered in the game’s files, the best of which we’ve put together for your viewing pleasure via the gallery below.

Respawn Entertainment, having struggled through a disappointing launch back in 2016 with the second entry in its cult Titanfall series, hit the ground running this year.
Back in February, the developer unleashed Apex Legends on the world. Despite arriving with little to no fanfare or pre-release marketing, the battle royale experienced immediate, explosive growth, pulling in millions of players eager to test their might in Kings Canyon in a matter of weeks. That unprecedented growth ultimately subsided, of course, but the shooter has since settled in and continues to give Epic Games’ dominant Fortnite a run for its money in the popular genre.
Running alongside that experiment, a separate team at the studio working tirelessly on a new Star Wars title finally delivered the fruits of their labor in the form of Jedi: Fallen Order. The single-player adventure, which tells the story of Jedi Cal Kestis and his struggle to survive against the Galactic Empire,...

In the sphere of competitive gaming, nothing is set in stone for long. Balance adjustments, buffs and nerfs all contribute to an ever-changing shift in what’s considered the best, and Apex Legends is no different in that regard. Instead of following in Epic Games’ footsteps with Fortnite‘s player avatars, Respawn opted to take a leaf out of Overwatch‘s book by creating a diverse cast of characters, each with their own established story and abilities.
The system, along with an eclectic choice of weapons and gadgets, helps to keep the experience of sky-diving into Kings Canyon feeling fresher for longer, though the feature certainly isn’t without its pitfalls. As Blizzard has struggled to do since the release of its team-based shooter, Respawn has found itself constantly having to make tweaks to Apex Legends‘ existing cast in order to keep each on a relative playing field to the other.

With seven billion people crammed onto the tiny – relatively speaking – planet we call Earth, it goes without saying that a certain portion of the population has some niche tastes when it comes to self-pleasure.
For some, the internet is as synonymous with porn as social media, and just like the latter, there’s no shortage of choice. As it turns out, video games have become big bucks for the adult industry over the last few years, too, with games like Overwatch gaining notoriety in the past for porn spoofs. Blizzard’s shooter, however, has fallen out of favor with audiences in recent times with another rising to take its place.

China’s first mainstream science-fiction film, “The Wandering Earth,” has surpassed “Operation Red Sea” to become the country’s second-highest-grossing movie of all time, with $679 million at the local box office and counting. “Crazy Alien,” another title released during last month’s competitive Chinese New Year period, has raked in $327 million domestically. Two more sci-fi movies are in the pipeline for release later this year.
Together, the films are charting a course for a previously nonexistent genre in the Middle Kingdom and are inspiring immense pride in rapt Chinese viewers. Although the country is home to a world-renowned sci-fi writer (Hugo Award winner Liu Cixin) and a burgeoning fan base, such domestically made sci-fi movies have exploded onto the scene only now that local production budgets and technical know-how can realize them.

A few months ago Netflix revealed that they were developing a new original cyberpunk sci-fi series called Altered Carbon, and Variety is reporting that Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, RoboCop, Suicide Squad) has been cast in the lead role. The series is based on the book of the same name by Richard K. Morgan, and it sounds like it could make for a solid show.
The futuristic series is set in the 25th century when the human mind has been digitized and the soul is transferable from one body to the next. Kinnaman will play Takeshi Kovacs, a former elite interstellar warrior known as an Envoy who has been imprisoned for 500 years and is downloaded into a future he had tried to stop. If he can solve a single murder in a world where technology has made death nearly obsolete, he’ll get a chance at a new life on Earth.

Want a quality action film, but you only have an hour and a half? Step this way...
Looking back over the genre, action films definitely haven’t suffered from the trend to make everything longer. They’ve always been pretty long, regularly clocking in at over two hours. Perhaps because of all the slo-mo? But while the sweet spot for action classics seems to be the 100-110 minute mark, there are those that have cut the genre right down to basics, and succeeded all the more for it.
Below is my pick of 25 great action films 90 minutes or under. Even more so than other genres, action crosses many other films - picking a pure ‘action’ flick is all but impossible. So below I’ve chosen films that retain action sequences as their main narrative device, and keep the action at the heart of the movie, rather than as a extra.

Here Bloodgood tells HitFix how Anne steps up as a leader in the fight for humanity’s survival against the invading aliens. The Red Granite International subsidiary has dropped a Marcus Nispel project into the Cannes market in the form of the maritime horror film.
Scott Sandler, Connor Colebrook and Juhani Nurmi wrote the screenplay to Stowaway from a story by Nispel (pictured) and Nurmi.
Los Angeles-based producers White Sands Pictures have earmarked an autumn start on the story of a woman who takes a yacht trip with her fiancé’s family, unaware of the clan’s secret that lies at the bottom of the ocean.
Stowaway is inspired by the Norse myth about an avenging seaborne humanoid creature and the production will benefit from the services of creature feature expert Mike Elizade of SpectralMotion.
Nispel, whose credits include Pathfinder, Conan The Barbarian and the upcoming Exeter, produces alongside Stefan Brunner. The executive producer is White Sands founder Juergen J Straub.

"Friday the 13th" and "Pathfinder" director Marcus Nispel has come on board to helm the horror-thriller "Stowaway" for White Sands Pictures.
The horror-thriller is based on Nordic mythology about an avenging sea creature. The action revolves around a yacht where a newly engaged woman discovers a family secret at the bottom of the ocean.
The tone is said to be that of an "edgy and original R-rated monster movie" with a beast that is "humanoid and strikes from below dark waters".
Nispel and Juhani Nurmi created the story which Scott Sandler, Connor Colebrook and Nurmi are adapting into a script. Nispel and Stefan Brunner will produce. Filming is slated to begin this Fall.

Listen up, horror fans! Now that Marcus Nispel got his version of R-rated fantasy out of his system (read: Conan the Barbarian and Pathfinder), he's heading back to the horror genre with Backmask, a rock n' roll themed gore fest that hinges on the hoary old yarn about playing records backwards to reveal hidden messages.

Originality in any form is not something you're going to find in Brett Ratner's Hercules. Take any PG-13 sword and sandal film you've seen lately -- glossy and gritty, drenched in black blood -- and add touches of Gladiator and Braveheart and you have this supposed "new" tale of the son of Zeus, or, as the film tells us... like... the real Zeus. You know, the Greek God and stuffc You know the one... rightc Yeah, we get it! The easiest comparison is to say Ratner has "updated" Hercules in the same way Marcus Nispel updated Conan, though this film does seem better than that one if only because it's shorter. The Nispel comparison seems apt, though, if you consider the visual palette Ratner is working with and the overall blunt force numbness of the plot. Adapted from Radical Studios' graphic novel "Hercules: The Thracian Wars", Hercules finds our...
