Sex & Nudity

  • A young woman wearing slightly revealing clothing flirts with a young man in a vehicle. It is implied that they will kiss and that other young couples go to this place to kiss or perform sexual acts. They do not kiss.
  • No male nudity, but a quick flash of a magazine cover with nudity easily missed.
  • There's no nudity of any kind in this, just brief pictures of suggestively dressed women.
  • There are Playboy magazines in one scene with a naked woman on one of the covers. This is hard to make out and incredibly brief. So brief, that it is under half of a second.

Violence & Gore

  • The violence isn't very graphic but it is very disturbing and it is even more disturbing because it actually happened.
  • While the kills are realistic but it's fairly tame compared to Se7en. More disturbing than grotesque
  • Just like with Se7en, most of the violence is offscreen, implied, or shown in the aftermath, but it is relatively less graphic but still quite disturbing, especially considering it portrays real life events unlike the former.
  • There's an infamous scene of a stabbing. They are bound giving everything a helpless feeling. It's not particularly graphic but the screaming and crying of the characters are so deeply disturbing.
  • Zodiac's threatening letters are shown on-screen and talked about. He talks about his murders and threatens more. With one he includes a bloody piece of a vicitm's shirt.
  • Two people are shot while sitting in a car (blood sprays on the windshield), one is shot several times, and the other is shot in the head and the knee. The scene takes place at night, so it's not entirely visible, though there is still blood.
  • Someone is shot in the back of the head. Blood sprays on the inside of the car and we see the man slumped over later.
  • We see a photo of a dead woman on the ground (blood covers her clothing, she lies in a pool of blood and we hear that she was stabbed). (some blood)
  • We see a man with bloodstained hands. (nothing much)

Profanity

  • The N-word is seen written on a piece of paper. The word does not get said out loud.
  • 10 uses of "fuck", this is a long movie so it sounds like less when you watch the movie. 8 uses of "shit"
  • 7 disrespectful uses of "Jesus" and Christ.
  • The r word is used twice.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A man snorts cocaine and a man has drug paraphernalia lying around his house. This is brief and hard to notice.
  • Young men are shown drinking alcohol and driving.
  • Almost every character is shown drinking or smoking cigarettes in several several scenes.
  • A man takes prescription drugs in a couple of scenes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There is some audio of Zodiac calling the police to take credit for his crimes and his voice sounds a bit creepy.
  • Some intense, disturbing and violent scenes.
  • Many scenes including strong, slightly disturbing threat.
  • In one scene a character visits a suspect's house. This scene is very suspenseful and tense.
  • Overall feel of the film is very scary, as it revolves around a serial killer
  • Police officers and reporters discuss the deaths in some detail.
  • We hear that someone jumped out of a moving car for their own protection (nothing too bad).

Spoilers

Sex & Nudity

  • It is revealed that a man is arrested for child molestation.

Violence & Gore

  • The scene where a couple are tied up and stabbed is the most visually disturbing scene in the film. It's realistic and the woman's howls of pain are particularly intense.
  • A man and a woman are stabbed several times in the back and the abdomen after being tied up and being held at gunpoint. Although very brief, the stabbings and the victims' terror is very realistically portrayed, and there is a very strong sense of threat.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The fact that the real life Zodiac killer was never apprehended gives the feeling of unease when viewing the events of the film.
  • The basement scene is very intense and may be frightening.
  • The Basement scene is regarded as one of the most frightening and creepy scenes in the history of cinema.
