Jessica Biel's new Prime Video thriller series continues a rather exciting TV streak that started back in 2017. Biel first climbed into fame in 1996 when she played Mary Camden in the family drama 7th Heaven, but in the years that followed, she focused predominantly on a movie career. Some of her notable projects include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Blade: Trinity (2004), The Illusionist (2006), The A-Team (2010), Hitchcock (2012), and more. Biel didn't dive back into a regular TV role until 2017's The Sinner, a project that performed exceptionally well and earned the actor Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.
The Sinner holds an impressive 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and though Biel stepped off the screen after season 1 to focus wholly on her executive producer role, the series has continued to perform well. In the eight years since, Biel has taken up other TV roles, including Linetown (2019), and Candy (2022 to present). These series performed exceptionally well with critics,...

Jessica Biel — a performer in films like The Illusionist and Blade: Trinity, and the TV series The Sinner and Candy — had yet to land her breakout role until she starred in the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Back then, Biel was still convinced she hadn't found the role that would change her life. However, during the production of the horror film, she had the opportunity to audition for a film that she was sure would launch her into stardom. The problem is that her audition for the lead role in The Notebook didn't go well. The 7th Heaven actor is sure that it was because of the heavy effects makeup she could not remove before auditioning opposite Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling.

To try to capture the life and times of Marcel Pagnol in a crisp one hour and a half must have seemed a daunting task but animator Sylvain Chomet has accomplished it with skilful distinction.
For his latest foray into animation after The Illusionist in 2010 and Belleville Rendez-vous in 2003, Chomet has crafted a loving and mellow portrait of one of France’s most revered creators whether in literature, theatre, and cinema as well as his hobby as an inventor.
It is framed in flashback, starting in 1956 Paris where Pagnol, then 61, feels his work has become unfashionable and he’s looking to pursue his thirst for invention by creating a perpetual motion machine.
The editor of a magazine asks him to write a memoir although he’s not convinced that he is capable of remembering all the details. Enter Pagnol’s younger self to spur his memory and we’re off with his tentative.

A Magnificent Life (Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol), a biopic of French playwright-filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, clearly represents a labor of love for writer-director Sylvain Chomet. His first animated feature since 2010’s The Illusionist, it features the gorgeous style first showcased in 2003’s award-winning The Triplets of Belleville. If its storytelling proves more rudimentary, hewing closely to the stylistic formula endemic to the genre, the ample visual pleasures prove their own reward. Premiering at Cannes, the film should find appreciative audiences in its native France, where its subject is best known.
The story, told in flashback, begins in 1956 Paris, where the 61-year-old Pagnol (voiced by Matthew Gravelle in the English-language version) is despairing that his work has gone out of fashion. Although he intends to give up writing to pursue his hobby of inventing (he’s working on a perpetual-motion machine), he’s asked by a magazine editor to pen a memoir.

Early on in beloved animation director Sylvain Chomet’s “A Magnificent Life” (French title “Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol”), septuagenarian Monsieur Pagnol laments that to write a memoir, one needs memories, but those he has none of any more. Lo and behold, a jaunty young boy, Marcel, soon comes to him.
To have an avatar of your childhood self arrive in timely fashion to resuscitate your fading belief in the brilliance of your internationally applauded, multi-hyphenate career, is a master projection of the ego. It’s the kind of attestation that acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, for instance, wouldn’t frown upon, given that his 1998 film, “After Life” (translated in Japanese as “Wonderful Life”) is about dead characters arriving at a way station to collaborate with its staff in creating a short film of their single most cherished memory before they pass on. Chomet was determined to reveal 'the human guy … the man who became Marcel Pagnol, rather than the figure of legend'
Marcel Pagnol, an iconic cultural figure in France through literature, theatre and films, maintained “the spirt of a child” throughout his life, driven by an inquisitive passion, curiosity and a tendency to be a control freak. He shares some of these traits with animation auteur Sylvain Chomet who is also taking a child-like glee in his latest project A Magnificent Life - an animated version of the life of Marseille’s favourite son which has just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
Sitting in the cool shade of a white tent atop the Palais des Festivals with views over the sparkling bay Chomet looks in his element, basking in positive critical feedback such as “Chomet celebrates French literary giant Marcel Pagnol in enchanting style” (Time Out) to “A gorgeous, decidedly...

Late afternoon light filters through a sparsely attended Parisian theatre as an elderly Marcel Pagnol, pen in hand, hesitates before a blank page—only to be nudged onward by the mischievous grin of his childhood self. That moment sets the tone for Sylvain Chomet’s animated biopic, in which the celebrated playwright-turned-filmmaker revisits his life through the eyes of both age and youth.
Chomet, best known for his gentle affection in Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionist, here offers a tender homage to one of France’s literary giants, tracing Pagnol from the sunbaked hills of Provence to the pre-war cafés of Paris.
The film marries hand-drawn linework with watercolor atmospheres, moving between the gray cobblestones of the city and the golden fields of home. We meet Pagnol at a crossroads: his latest play has stalled and he’s agreed, almost reluctantly, to serialize his memoirs for a fashion magazine.

For French animation auteur Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville, The Illusionist), storytelling has always lived in the space between silence and song. “Most of my work so far has been silent movies, I didn’t really do much with dialogue,” he says.
But for his latest project — A Magnificent Life, a fully animated biopic of pioneering French screenwriter and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, which Sony Pictures Classics will release stateside — Chomet brings one of cinema’s great voices back to life.
Pagnol revolutionized film dialogue, bringing literary sophistication and realism to the screen at a time, in the early sound era, when producers feared the spoken word. He also brought regional realism, having his actors speak in the broad Marseilles dialect of his hometown, unheard of at the time. Pagnol transformed the style of European cinema by taking the camera outdoors, inspiring Italian neorealism and the Nouvelle Vague. His proposal...

Plot: Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your first car. Set in a once-thriving rust-belt town that’s now searching for a glimmer of hope, the series is an adrenaline-filled story of a group of outsiders who form an unlikely friendship over a mutual love of street racing, while navigating the hierarchy and rules of high school.
Review: I am not a car guy, but I am a sucker for movies and series that feature racing. I am also a sucker for kids banding together and forging a team to push back against bullies and bad guys. Whether it be The Goonies, It, or even the Harry Potter films, when a series or film can deliver a teen-centric drama without pandering to the soapier tendencies of young adult fare, it can make for a very entertaining watch. Were you worried that there was only one upcoming movie where someone gets eaten by a whale? Fret not. There are two, actually.
Leslie Grace — an actor and singer known for "In the Heights" and the "Batgirl" movie that Warner Bros. deleted from existence — is set to star in director Felipe Vargas' next movie "Propel" (per Variety), which is described as "'Gravity' meets '127 Hours' underwater." Grace will star as diver Kate Acosta, who ends up swallowed by an enormous sperm whale while performing a commercial dive ... and who has to figure out how to escape with her life.
The particularly funny thing about this news is that "Whalefall," a novel by Daniel Kraus, is also being adapted into a major motion picture. In March 2025, Deadline reported that Josh Brolin was in talks to join the project's cast alongside star Austin Abrams, with Brian Duffield ("No One Will Save You...

The predominant discourse around Neil Burger’s The Illusionist (2006) seems to largely center around its similarities (or dissimilarities) with the much-acclaimed “The Prestige,” released in the same year. Based on a 1989 short story written by Steven Milhauser, “The Illusionist” brings together such names as Edward Norton, Jessica Biel, and Paul Giamatti to present the story of an illusionist uncovering Victorian society and its ills. It has been noted by academics and critics alike how cinematic representation of the emergence of Victorian-era stage magic is the metaphorical bearer of the simultaneous magic in making: the magical world of the cinema. “The Illusionist” makes for a perfect case in point to trace the trajectory.
In this article, an attempt has been made to decode the ending of The Illusionist (2006) and provide a detailed analysis of some of the overarching thematic concerns of the film.

The concept of "twin films" has recently caught the attention of movie fans on social media. Twin films are a pair of movies with shockingly similar concepts that release in the same year. This phenomenon usually happens as a result of some cultural event bringing an idea to the forefront of the Hollywood hivemind, and two different studios entering development without awareness of each other. Some famous and funny examples include 2006's The Prestige and The Illusionist, two films about 19th century magicians, 2013's White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen, two films about attacks on the White House, and 2011's Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached, two films about friendships turned hook-ups. Somehow, someway, these filmmakers settle on the same exact idea, and end up having to race to get their film released.
While slightly less notable, it's also interesting when films released decades apart somehow stumble upon similar terrain.

Look, we all love a beautiful, inspiring Oscar moment. But we're also only human, and we also like a little bit of a trainwreck now and again. Luckily, the Academy Awards provideth. A lot. Like, there have been a shocking amount of flubs, considering what a tightly-run production an Oscars telecast has to be. For every sweet and charming moment celebrating the magic of movies and the ephemeral quality of celebrity, we are blessed with at least a few total cringe-fests.
Whether it's the Academy making a misguided attempt to swing for the fences and falling flat on their faces or actors and presenters making choices that will haunt them well beyond the grave, awkward moments are never in short supply. If the Academy Awards were to ever go fully meme-happy and create a Best Gaffe category, these would undeniably be the nominees for the Most Awkward Oscars Moments.

Edward Norton is widely recognized for his versatile acting skills, with a storied career that has spanned various genres and characters. With his special ability to embody complex, often very conflicted and multifaceted characters, Norton has left a truly indelible mark on the film industry, delivering performances that have audiences talking decades later. From the raw intensity of his breakthrough role in Primal Fear to the quieter vulnerability he brought to a film like The Illusionist, Norton's body of work has always showed off his ability to adapt to both nuanced, character-driven dramas and larger-than-life cinematic spectacles.
Norton’s filmography often features characters grappling with themes of fractured identity, grappling with oneself, and the unraveling of people's lives, with the actor’s meticulous approach to all of his characters making each role unforgettable. Writer-Director Neil Burger boasts quite a diverse catalog of films, ranging from sci-fi action flicks like Divergent and Limitless to the romantic mystery period film The Illusionist and the psychological crime thriller adaptation The Marsh King's Daughter. His latest, Inheritance, now takes him into the world of spy thrillers, following a woman who discovers her father's past in espionage, unknowingly thrusting her into the heart of an international conspiracy. There's no predicting what he has planned next given his range, but, fortunately, there's no need to do any guessing because he already has a few plans in motion. In an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub for Inheritance, he opened up about two ideas that are next on the docket, including a biopic that he was able to pull back the curtain on ever so slightly.

When reviewing a film, reading the director’s statement can feel an awful lot like checking their will. What an artist intended with the choices they left behind won’t always matter to the audience, but Neil Burger’s “Inheritance” is worth researching before you buy the ticket. Knowing how this strangely pedestrian thriller got produced not only makes it far more enjoyable to watch but highlights a new storytelling approach that might work better on the second try.
Captured on location in Egypt, India, South Korea, and New York City, IFC Films’ latest experiment in suspense — a father-daughter espionage adventure starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans — uses a naturalistic shooting style that spurred some great behind-the-scenes stories. Known for films like “Limitless” and “Divergent,” Burger aimed to make another slippery psychological drama with mainstream action appeal, but this time, he tried to give it some added oomph by boosting the authenticity.

If it weren’t for the empty adjustable hospital bed in the room, it would seem like Maya’s (Phoebe Dynevor) story is a lot like any other film about 20-somethings living in New York City: she steps out into the night, nicks a bottle of booze from a liquor store and proceeds to take hearty swigs of her purloined goods in public; she dances in a club with the abandon of someone avoiding life’s sobering troubles; she accepts the advances of a stranger. The two end up in bed together, and then, moments later, the stranger is gone. For a brief moment, we’re in the throes of a young woman’s existential journey set in The City That Never Sleeps. This isn’t that type of movie, however; it’s actually an international spy thriller directed by Neil Burger.

In description, “Inheritance” sounds like one of those movies that’s about the gimmickry of its own making: A spy thriller shot entirely on iPhone, with many scenes staged in public without permits for added urgency and spontaneity. But this latest feature from Neil Burger, who co-wrote the script with spy novelist Olen Steinhauer, ultimately transcends mere novelty by having an even smaller-scale gist than you’d expect. For all its multinational sprawl and intimations of high peril, the film is ultimately a two-person drama about a daughter (Phoebe Dynevor) finding out who her long-absent father (Rhys Ifans) really is. What she learns is bitter, but also dramatically satisfying enough to make this release, hitting theaters from IFC Films on Friday, feel like something more than just one more low-budget action movie with familiar faces.

Edward Norton, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, has been one of our finest screen actors for 30 years. He’s a three-time Oscar nominee, twice nominated before the age of 30, and it’s looking increasingly likely that he’ll pick up a fourth nom later this month in recognition of his touching portrayal of the gentle folk singer Pete Seeger opposite Timothée Chalamet’s Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown. He already was nominated for a Golden Globe Award, and he is nominated for Critics Choice and SAG awards.

A young man sits alone with nothing but his thoughts and his hunger… his hunger to succeed and his hunger for In-n-Out burgers and milkshakes, which he was using to bulk up. Because this man is an actor, not just any actor, he is an up-and-coming movie star with something to prove and he is going to do just that through his artistry and his physicality. No longer would Aaron Johnson be known as the Kick-Ass kid, he was about to be known as the top performer to watch, known as the man who was about to be an A-lister until he was known as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, cuz he decided to take his wife’s last name and confuse everyone on so many levels – especially me! ”I was always told at school that you had to have a backup plan, but all I ever wanted to do was act.

"He'll kill me if he finds me!" Run, Phoebe, run! IFC Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie thriller film titled Inheritance, now set for release in theaters starting late January 2025. Strangely haven't heard much about this film before and it hasn't shown up at any film festivals either. From director Neil Burger, Inheritance follows Maya, who learns her father Sam was once a spy. Suddenly, she finds herself at the center of an international conspiracy and must go on the run, too. Starring Phoebe Dynevor, Rhys Ifans, Ciara Baxendale, and Majd Eid. This looks like an intricate & intimate thriller, with tons of intense GoPro-esque close-up shots of Dynevor as she goes on the round. Also looks like they shot this with a tiny crew using cheap digital cameras all around the world and filming on the fly (without permits or approvals in some of these countries). It might be entertaining?...

The Illusionist is a miraculous work of art that succeeds, through the magic of animation, in resurrecting the essence of legendary French mime and film auteur Jacques Tati. The film is a charming and beautiful 2010 Oscar-nominated 79-minute-long animated feature by acclaimed French animator Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville), a long-time admirer and disciple of Tati. The film is based on an un-produced script by Tati who is best known for his four silent Monsieur Hulot comedies made from 1953 to 1971 silent, because they were mimed. Hulot, a Charlie Chaplin-inspired character portrayed by Tati is a friendly but befuddled tourist character with his trademark raincoat, umbrella, hat, and ever-present pipe, perpetually caught off guard in the busy modern world.
