Ben Affleck claimed the Directors Guild of America Award for Argo on Saturday in Hollywood’s latest thumb-in-the-eye to the small group of filmmakers in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who failed to nominate him for an Oscar.

When Matthew Weiner cast Montreal native Jessica Paré as a pretty assistant at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, only a few people knew that she would eventually become Mrs. Don Draper. Initially, Paré was not one of those few, so even after a moon-eyed Draper proposed to her during the final episode of season 4, she understood that her next scene could very easily include her resting peacefully in a casket. But Weiner had other ideas, and in the long-awaited season 5 premiere, he unveiled a whole new show dynamic, with Don and Megan’s relationship at the heart of it. “I said it as a joke,...

Reviewing and recommending any new home video release of Mad Men is an absurdly easy task. This is the best series on television, one of the single greatest dramas in the history of the medium, and among the smartest and most meaningful works of art, in any format, of the modern era. AMC and Lionsgate have always recognized this by putting a staggering amount of effort into the home video packages, delivering flawless video and audio and assembling hefty, invaluable archives of bonus material.
None of that changes with the show’s fifth season. This is, arguably, the series’ most creatively ambitious and successful run to date, and the Blu-Ray and DVD releases are just as rock solid as ever. Mad Men Season Five is a must-own release on either format, continuing to set an insanely high bar for television on home video.

If you read my reviews of the last few episodes of Mad Men this season – especially the season finale – you’ll know that I wasn’t a huge fan of some of the story arcs this year. The acting, however, remained incredible and there are still a number of scenes that have stayed with me the few weeks since the finale aired.

We all weren’t sure what to make of Megan when Don impulsively proposed to her at the end of the previous season, but I have to admit, most of us were quite enamored with her after her lustful performance of “Zou Bisou Bisou” at his surprise birthday party. (Or maybe that was just me.)

Mad Men, Season 5, Episode 13: “The Phantom”
Written by Jonathan Igla & Matthew Weiner
Directed by Matthew Weiner
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
Having set such high standards, it’s disappointing to find that the season finale doesn’t live up to the same quality as previous episodes. ‘The Phantom’ isn’t necessarily a weak 50 minutes of television, but for the first time this season, Weiner’s renowned plotting lets him down.
That said, the fifth season has demonstrated that Mad Men is still the best character drama on television. It’s probably the strongest season thus far. Its writing, acting, direction, editing and costume design has been supreme. Other competitors will have trouble matching the writing for ‘Signal 30′, ‘Mystery Date’ and ‘The Other Woman’. The performances from Hamm and Moss in the emotional ‘The Other Woman’ and Vincent Kartheiser in ‘Signal 30′ are due strong praise. You won’t...

Mad Men's acclaimed costume designer Janie Bryant has been nominated for an Emmy five times and won for her work on HBO's Deadwood in 2005. She was also nominated three times for Costume Designers Guild awards for her work on Deadwood and won a Cdg for Mad Men in 2009 and 2010. So Janie knows a little something about selecting the right episode to best illustrate the scope of her work. It should be no surprise to viewers that this year Bryant picked the Season Five two-hour premiere (“A Little Kiss”) for her 2012 Emmy costume submission. Can you

If we’ve accepted, years later, that the world will never see another Sopranos, another Sex and the City, another Lost—hell, not even another Entourage—the TV landmarks of 2012 are the shows that stopped the focus on the past. When the brilliant dangers of Homeland arrived to shore, American Horror Story twisted fiction on its head, and Girls became twee-ly epic in all its polarizing mediocrity, they spearheaded a league of new series that took watercooler debate and discussion back to the main stage, making us fall in love with the small screen all over again. Even if the freshmen had to rival the brutal trials of Breaking Bad and the long-awaited return of Donald Draper’s Mad Men, they’re still responsible for forging new ground, reimaging and reinventing the ways we can be shocked, awed, challenged, gripped, enamored, and moved by television.

Mad Men "Mystery Date" -- An Expert Opinion
"Megan, meet my previous life. Previous life..."
“The evil that men do lives after them,” Act Three, Scene Two, Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.
“There’s my Don Draper. I like him when he’s a cad.” My wife, Sunday April 9th, 2012.
As has become standard operating procedure for Mad Men, the third episode of the season marks a dramatic turn for the characters and a sign that the creative team behind the show has hit their stride.
In Season One, “Marriage of Figaro” opened with Don sniffing at the Volkswagen Lemon ad and then pinwheeling after an old war buddy called him Dick Whitman. In Season Two, Don fell off the monogamy wagon in “The Benefactor”. Season Three saw Don swap stories and Old Fashioneds with an intriguing older man who turns out to be Conrad Hilton of the Hilton family...

"Nobody loves Dick Whitman." It's been seventeen long months since we last saw Mad Men and the breathless two-hour season premiere goes a long way towards curbing our addiction, quickly bringing us up to speed in the changes within the lives of Don Draper (Jon Hamm), Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks), Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser), and the rest of the ad men at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. If Season Four began with a provocative question ("Who is Don Draper?"), the fifth season opener ("A Little Kiss"), written by Matthew Weiner and directed by Jennifer Getzinger, begins with more than a few declarative statements, about both the characters and the era in which they live, and those four little words, uttered by Megan (Jessica Paré), speak volumes about the sort of relationship Don is enmeshed in when Season Five begins. For a man who cloaked himself with secrets...

Mad Men's January Jones Talks Betty's Future
AMC
For those who watched Mad Men's season 5 premiere "A Little Kiss" this past Sunday night, something seemed oddly missing. Just where in the name of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce was Better Draper Francis?
Officially speaking, January Jones wasn't available to appear in the two-hour premiere due to being eight months pregnant at the time of shooting, but the former Mrs. Donald Draper will return in all her icy blonde glory with this coming Sunday's episode "Tea Leaves," directed by Jon Hamm himself. When last we left Betty Francis, she and new husband Henry Francis prepared to move to a new home in Rye, New York, as she learned of Don's engagement to Megan (Jessica Paré), and expressed her unhappiness with her own marriage. So what's next for Betty?

Mad Men Season 5 - A Little Kiss - A Little Review
Yes, it’s been a while since we’ve been privy of the dramas at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (Did Don Draper actually marry that French-Canadian girl Megan? What is the aftermath of Joan and Roger’s post-robbery love child? What’s life like after the loss of American Tobacco?), and those were almost overshadowed by the dramas that played out in the AMC offices (Will Matthew Weiner return as show-runner? How much money did he get to return? How many episodes will young Kiernan Shipka direct this season?). All of the fans sat down to see how Weiner and his team would emerge from the public manoeuvrings and the heavy zeitgeist-bearing load that has befallen the creator’s passion project.
Was he successful? An emphatic, definitive...kinda.
Overall, the episode was wonky. Discordant and unsure, the first half-hour...

It's been so long since the best series on television was airing (17 months!) that this new version of The Film Experience has never seen an episode of "Mad Men at the Movies". Last night the miserable sexy funny smart complex men and women of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce returned to take us all back to the sixties once again. In this series we document the show's love affair with the cinema. Don Draper (Jon Hamm) is a movie buff and references tend to be sprinkled in for vintage flavor, character detailing and thematic resonance. Unfortunately this two hour premiere had no movie references. Damn!

Mad Men, Season 5, Episodes 1 & 2: “A Little Kiss”
Written by Matthew Weiner
Directed by Jennifer Getzinger
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
The feature-length season premiere of Mad Men rejoins us with Don and his team at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (Scdp), as writer/creator Matthew Weiner resumes the show’s exploration of smoking, drinking, gender and race relations…this time it’s May 1966.
True to form, the show throws an eclectic range of conflicts at its characters in the opening episode of season five, which should tantalize its devoted viewership. Set against the backdrop of Memorial Day ’66, we find Don roughly seven months into his marriage with his former secretary Megan. Pete, who seems reasonably content with his home-life, remains steadfast in the procurement of success at Scdp. Peggy grapples with Don’s apparently changed demeanor and Joan, who remains off work, deals with the strain, and care,...

When we left off in October 1965, all our characters were on the brink of life changing events: Don impulsively proposed to his secretary, Pete just had a baby, Joan is pregnant with Roger's baby and pretending it's Greg's, and Betty was moving into her "not perfect" new house with Henry and the kids. Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce was dealing with the fallout of Don's anti-tobacco ad and Cooper quit! With the 17 excruciating years months between the seasons, the shock of the finale sunk in and these changes became matter of fact as we waited with bated breath (and reruns) to see how far into the future we'd be launched and how it all turned out. Well, it's about nine months later on June 1, 1966 and lives carried on. The time gap is also somewhat synced up with us, season four ended in October of 2010 and it's starting up again in spring.

Welcome back, Mad Men! What has it been? Seventeen months? Not like anyone was counting down to your return. Or that everyone was counting down to your return…. Alright, we missed you, Mad Men. Tremendously. And the fact that you came back with a stellar two-hour episode — entitled “A Little Kiss” — meant that you missed us as well.
So, where to begin? That it is June 1966? How about with the fact that Don Draper (Jon Hamm) is back in the saddle, both at work and at home. Over at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, he’s still the big draw even after last season’s full-page, preemptive strike of an ad against cigarette companies (a stroke of genius in my book but a potential business killer in 1965). Clients, like Heniz and Mohawk Airlines, are drunkardly tripping over themselves — Pete Campbell-style — to work with the man. He’s also not playing a...

The New York advertising world is the lens through which "Mad Men" filters its expanding array of themes, from counterculture to aging to war to -- at last, as promised by the scenes bookending last night's season premiere "A Little Kiss" -- race. But foremost, for me at least, it's always been a show about gender, about masculine ideals (Don Draper, miserable in the hard-won, seemingly perfect life with which he started the series) and shifting female identity (Peggy and Joan and their workplace struggles, Betty and her need to be both commanding adult and indulged child, the many ladies in Don's life). "A Little Kiss" adds a massive complexity to its take on the topic with what's become of Megan Calvet (Jessica Paré), now Megan Draper, the girl Don (Jon Hamm) impulsively proposed to at the end of the last season. When it happened, Joan (Christina Hendricks) predicted to...

Mad Men – “A Little Kiss” Parts One and Two
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
It’s been a while since we last saw Don Draper and company. Eighteen months, give or take. Too long. I’ve missed them, though it was very kind of the series to give someone else a chance to win a bunch of Emmys. Now they are back, and that’s good. But will the memory of what was live up to the reality of what is?
We begin the new season at the end of May, 1968, with shots of a civil rights protest happening outside the office of Y&R, an ad agency in competition with Scdp. The idiot execs think there would be nothing more fun than dropping bags of ice and water onto the protestors, a plan which works quite well until some of them come upstairs to complain. This doesn’t seem connected to the larger story,...

Mad Men Season 5 Premiere "A Little Kiss" Review
Mad Men returns with this superb double episode after 17 months away from screens and many of those big questions are finally answered. Is Don (Jon Hamm) married to Megan (Jessica Paré)? Has Joan (Christina Hendricks) had her baby? What year is it?
It is the Tuesday after Memorial Day weekend in 1966, so just under a year has passed since season 4; Don has indeed married Megan and Joan has had her baby. All seems like it is going relatively well for Don and the business are still continuing despite this stability being tentative; Don and Roger (John Slattery) are sharing a secretary after all. Megan's position at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce is in the creative team, a move that is not lost on a visiting Joan. Megan is unlike Jane Sterling (Peyton List), who clearly married for the money and the luxury and...

The times they are a changin'. Although it was only seven or eight months since Don went to California with Megan in the Mad Men season four finale, everything felt different in "A Little Kiss."
Don and Megan couldn't keep their hands off of each other, even as they walked into work together, Pete and Roger were nearly at each other's throats attempting to gain the advantage within Scdp, Joan was at home taking care of her new born, and Peggy was working day and night, managing very little success.
Okay, so maybe that last one was exactly what we've seen from Peggy for a few years now, but there was definitely a different vibe to start the season. The period we were watching only moved from October of 1965 to Memorial Day of 1966, but the 1950s feeling of previous seasons was almost entirely gone, which was no more evident than at Don's surprise party.

Mad Men S05E01/S05E02: "A Little Kiss"
After 17 months jonesing for a Mad Men fix, our first minutes of Season 5 were something of a mildly perverse joke, spent with a group of young ad men we.ve never even seen before. Many stories below, a crowd of predominantly African-American protesters march in support of equal-opportunity hiring. Our only clue as to what year it is a .Goldwater .68. sign hanging in their window. I could feel my pulse begin to race as questions piled on... More >>...

He had proposed to his young secretary, Megan (Jessica Paré) after taking her on a trip to Disneyland with his children. As in seasons past, Sunday night's premiere episode has been shrouded in secrecy - with nary a plot point revealed. (Not even the year in which the season is set!) So, if you haven't seen the season 5 premiere yet, stop reading! There are spoilers ahead … Video: Jon Hamm's Top 5 Lol MomentsIt's...

Is everyone ready for the status meeting?
All together now: Ahhhhhh!
We went a long time between "Mad Men" seasons, my fellow fans, and Sunday's two-hour premiere was a chance to just exhale and hang with them. Didn't it feel good?
Sure, nothing cataclysmic happened in the season premiere -- Lane finding a wallet, Don not scolding a client and Joan not being fired don't exactly count as earthshattering events. But so what? Surely there are big events to come, and, as has happened in every other "Mad Men" season premiere, no doubt things were set in motion that will continue to play out for the next 11 hours of the show's fifth season.
I don't know about you, but I just luxuriated in the season premiere, which revolved around...

"The only thing worse than not getting what you want is somebody else getting it." That Roger Sterling line, tossed off in tonight's two-hour season-five premiere of Mad Men, refers to a specific moment in the show, but it also hints at the episode's themes. The time is 1966, right after Memorial Day weekend, and the elapsed time between this episode and the events of the last one (about seven months) suggests that many of the characters have traversed psychological distances far greater than calendars would indicate. Envy, disappointment, and fear of losing what you've got: These feelings have always powered subplots on Mad Men, but they're front and center in "A Little Kiss," a classically structured, self-contained, long-form piece. If most installments of the show play like short stories, this one is more of a novella — as well it should be, considering the elapsed time between this chapter and...

Chicago – The long-awaited return of AMC’s four-time Emmy Best Drama winner “Mad Men” is finally here and there seems to be more doubt than ever before. Will the 17 months since a new episode hurt the show creatively? Can “Mad Men” stay as culturally important and creatively consistent this far into its run or will it start to struggle? I felt the doubt in the air when I put in the two-hour premiere, “A Little Kiss.” And it was gone before the first commercial break. “Mad Men” is back. And it feels like it was never gone.
TV Rating: 5.0/5.0
There seems to have been a very conscious effort on the part of Matthew Weiner and the incredible writers on “Mad Men” to make the start of this season very much a continuation of where these characters last were when we left them in season four. There have been shows that...

Critics are offering up raves and caution in their assessments of Sunday's return.

After a 17-month break, "Mad Men" finally returns Sunday night to begin its fifth season. Its return, however, is being met with mixed reviews — well, mixed reviews for "Mad Men," that is, which would be considered raves if they were for any other series.
The devil is in the details when you're a four-time Emmy Winner for Outstanding Drama Series. After all, when you are arguably the most critically beloved series on television, you are always being compared to yourself. So now, as the cracks start to show — like they do for every series this far into its run — critics can't resist pointing them out alongside the expected raves about the show's cast and film-level production.

How different are things when "Mad Men" (9 p.m. E.T. Sunday, AMC) finally returns for its fifth season?
Pretty different. In the season premiere, it's the year 2025 and Don and the gang -- who have taken anti-aging drugs discovered on Venus -- finally open an interstellar ad agency on the moon. All the characters you love are still around, but will you still enjoy the show the same way when you find out that Roger and Joan have been turned into lizard people by evil space robots led by Ted Chaough?
Forgive my lapse into completely fictional "Mad Men" spoilers. Rest assured, there are no space lizards or rocket ships in "A Little Kiss," the first new "Mad Men" episode in more than 500 days. But it's hard to resist the urge to tweak creator Matthew Weiner's insistence on absolutely no spoilers ever -- and to him, every single thing...

Who remembers what happened 17 months ago? No one! Over at The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature,"Mad Men: Where We Left Off," for which I re-watched every episode of Season 4 of Mad Men (in a 36-hour period) in order to remind you where we left Don Draper, Peggy Olson, Joan, and the rest of the characters when the season ended. Television, like advertising, is typically a swift-moving beast. But it’s been a staggering 17 months since Mad Men aired its last episode. At the time, no one could have predicted that it would be March 2012 before AMC aired the highly anticipated fifth season of Mad Men, which returns this Sunday evening with a sensational two-hour season premiere. The reasons behind the delay are known far and wide, as protracted and very public contract renegotiations behind the scenes of Mad Men resulted in a longer than expected hiatus between seasons,...

“Mad Men” is coming. There are no spoilers, no official clues. For the Los Angeles premiere, people are being sworn on their deceased relatives’ graves not to say a word about what they’re shown. No one knows if there’s a New York premiere or even screening DVDs. I think it’s great. But you know, we are able to divine a few things. First of all, star Jon Hamm directs episode 3 called “Tea Party.” Episode 1 and 2 are a two parter on opening night, March 25th, called “A Little Kiss.”

Mad Men star Jon Hamm has dropped more hints about the fifth season. The '60s-set period drama will return later this month with two-hour premiere 'A Little Kiss'. "It's every man for himself [in season five]," Hamm told Vulture. "That's obviously not gender-specific. Everybody is acting in their own self-interest, and that creates some pretty good dramatic tension." He added: "It's a world that's consistently in a state of flux. There are things done [this season] that can't be undone." The actor also revealed that he knows "exactly" how Mad Men (more)...

Mad Men Season 5 Poster Unveiled
It's been a long time since we had a new photo of Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and this new Mad Men season 5 poster delivers just that. The shot for season 4 featured Don standing in an empty office, with only a phone for furniture signifying a new start. Season 3 was somewhat foreboding as Don is sitting in his office, flooded with water. So what have we got for Season 5?
A teaser poster was released last month (see right); using the iconic image from the opening credits and is effective in its simplicity and only featured the date that the show will return to AMC. The new poster (which you can see below) is as ambiguous as you would expect and has Don looking at a shop window display; the male mannequin is clothed in sleepwear and is sitting, while the female one is standing naked, with clothes at its feet.

The fifth season of Mad Men will debut in the UK just two days after its Us premiere. The AMC drama - which stars Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks - will air on Sky Atlantic from March 27. The new run will begin with two-hour premiere 'A Little Kiss', penned by series creator Matthew Weiner. "There's a time jump," said Weiner. "There are some new people. Changes have happened off screen, and the audience will have to catch up with that. Even though Don (Hamm) ended up making this overture to Megan (Jessica Paré), and the audience felt sort of peculiar about it, so did the people in the office. That's something that we play on." Weiner previously hinted that future episodes will include "a feeling of being in the midst of change". "There's (more)...

Mad Men Season 5 Kicks off With a Little Kiss
For someone who’s supposed to be pretty darned tight lipped about his award winning series Mad Men, Matthew Weiner just can’t seem to stop talking about what’s to come for the series’ fifth season premiere. Granted, he’s not exactly handing out major spoilers to anyone who will listen, but compared to his usually high level of secrecy he’s saying quite a lot. He must be really excited for where Mad Men is going! Or maybe since the show is locked for seven seasons he doesn’t feel the need to draw audiences in with mystery anymore.
Weiner spoke with TV Guide about the two-hour premiere, set to air March 25th (that’s a Sunday, folks), and revealed the episode’s title, “A Little Kiss.” Weiner was coy about what the title means, but we can safely assume Don Draper (Jon Hamm,...
