When the U.S. Embassy in Beirut was decimated by a car bomb in 1983, it was not just a symbolic strike against America. Someone deliberately targeted those they believed were calling the shots in this volatile region - the CIA. Nearly the entire Middle East CIA Station was wiped out. The agency called on "Captain Crunch" Keith Hall, a former Marine who was one of the CIA's best men in the field. Keith arrived in Beirut with the full resources of a battered agency behind him - and a difficult mission in front.

This episode documents the work of DEA agent, Enrique Camarena, who was stationed deep undercover in Mexico in the mid 1980's. His mission was to carry out drug interdiction efforts at it's source. He was a Mexican American originally assigned the Fresno area. When the opportunity arose he took an assignment based in Guadalajara, Mexico. He utilized his Spanish speaking ability and knowledge of Mexican culture to develop many important contacts. He spearheaded what was then the largest marijuana bust by DEA of a plantation in Chihuahua, Mexico. Soon after the bust he disappeared while in Guadalajara. Fellow DEA agents worked tirelessly to locate Camarena. They found the local Mexican authorities unwilling to give assistance, or even to impede the progress of the investigation into Camarena's whereabouts. When the investigation seemed to reach a standstill, relations between the two countries became strained. Eventually, the US Attorney General ordered the border sealed. This resulted in compliance from the Mexican authorities, and the body of Camarena was soon found in a ranch in the central Mexican state of Michoacan. His body showed signs of torture. The heads of the local drug cartel were captured, and shown to be conspirators in the death of Camarena. The Mexican authorities refused to extradite the culprits, who were Mexican citizens, to the US, even under intense pressure from the highest levels of the US government. They ended up receiving long prison sentences in Mexico. As a postscript, the episode gives some attention to the impact that Camarena's life and work have on current drug interdiction efforts, including brief interviews with friends and family, as well as programs such as D.A.R.E., aimed at preventing drug abuse among children.
