Finally, a central minister has woken up to the vulgar and abusive content on the various Ott platforms. All in the name of freedom of expression – much more than what the century-old Indian film industry gets to enjoy.
It is rather strange that not only the country’s ruling elite, but even the courts think that the Ott platforms were entitled to freedom, while the feature films were not! After reports and comments on the overdose of vulgar content in the news and social media, Information & Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has warned the Ott platforms that obscenity and abusive language cannot be tolerated.
But then, ministers are known to make grand statements, but the implementation of the warnings/laws remains ineffective.
Why make a statement and why not take concrete steps to settle the issue once and for all? After all, this trend of dishing out vulgar, violent, gory depictions...

Film commentaryThese three recent south Indian releases, belonging to different genres, engage with ideas on faith and religious values. Sowmya RajendranNetflix series A Suitable Boy recently ran into trouble for showing a Muslim man and a Hindu woman kissing in a temple. Apart from the expected outrage on social media from right wing handles, an Fir was also filed against officials of the Over the Top (Ott) platform. The representation of religion on screen has periodically run into controversy with religious groups and the government, as in the case of films like Mani Ratnam's Bombay, Rahul Dholakia's Parzania, Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam, Rajkumar Hirani's Pk or more recently Raju Murugan's Gypsy. In the current political climate, such outrage and censorship have become the norm, with a communal angle given to characters, scenes and subjects even if the film ostensibly does not deal with religion or communalism. In such a scenario,...

It was exactly a decade ago when Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika came together for Rahul Dholakia’s Parzania [2007]. The tragic tale had the veteran actors pair up as a grieving couple as their child goes missing. Now 10 years down the line, it is their respective children who have grown up and are now being seen together as a pair in Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana. This time around too, there is a child involved in the tale, though the peg is that of an unborn, and not a missing child.
“It is as uncanny as it gets,” comments our source, “Who would have thought that the family members would come together again on screen with a child in the middle of the affairs? Of course, Parzania was a serious tragic affair whereas Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana is a feel-good family entertainer. Still, it is some coincidence to...

Rahul Dholakia has re-worked Shah Rukh's look and accent in Raees. "He plays a man from the ghetto in Gujarat. He will dress and speak in a particular manner." The idea for the film started on the issue of Prohibition. "We wanted to make a film on the issue. And since Gujarat is the only state that has Prohibition, we decided to locate our plot in Gujarat." The buzz is that Shah Rukh Khan plays a true-life character in Raees. Says Rahul, "His character started off as a real-life person. But as we wrote and re-wrote several drafts of the script, Shah Rukh's character become more and more fictional." Raees, the film about Prohibition in Gujarat, will be largely shot by its fine director Rahul Dholakia on a sprawling set in Mumbai representing the slums of Ahmedabad. The last time Rahul was in Gujarat was to shoot Parzania...

Director Rahul Dholakia opens up on Raees, a film that will take Shah Rukh Khan in a world as far away from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge as Punjab is from London. Rahul says it wasn't difficult to convince Shah Rukh Khan at all. "I had gone to narrate the script to Shah Rukh (Khan) with my producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar. I think Shah Rukh got interested. Because at mid-point he said he's doing the film. I felt like a schoolboy who has just been told he has passed. It's every director's nightmare that an actor would get bored during the script narration." The second-half of the script had to be apparently reworked a bit. "Not much. But some changes had to be made, though not that much, because it was the unusualness of the script that appealed to Shah Rukh." What blew Rahul's mind was Shah Rukh Khan's memory.

It's final. Kamal Haasan and Sarika's younger daughter Akshara Haasan who has studied music and filmmaking is also bitten by the acting bug. Both her parents felt Akshara was more cut out for being behind the camera. And since the elder daughter Shruti was already an actress, Akshara's filmmaking potential would have nicely rounded off the family's creative ambit. "But parents can't make up their children's minds. Not now-a-days at least. Kamalji and Sarikaji thought Akshara was more interested in direction. Sarika put her on to her friend Rahul Dholakia with whom she has worked in Parzania and Society. Akshara assisted Rahul Dholakia and the whole family thought she was heading towards a career in filmmaking. But then Balki spotted Akshara. He offered her a role in his new film. And Akshara took the plunge," says a friend of Kamal Haasan's family. Interestingly, Akshara is paired with Dhanush in Balki's film.

Rahul Dholakia will soon be working on the issues of the Nandigram tragedy, but only when his producer Ravi Chopra revives back to a healthy condition
Rahul Dholakia has shown adept dexterity in making films about political turned social issues with his National award winning (the Silver and Golden Lotus Award for Best Actress and Best Direction) film Parzania (2005). He was reported to make a film on the issues that helmed from the prohibition of alcohol in the state of Gujarat a few days back.
Recently, sources reveal that the director is working on a film titled Kanoon which is based on the Nandigram tragedy that took place in Nadigram, a village in West Bengal. The film will apparently be a courtroom drama etched on the lines of the Nandigram tragedy. The film is also inspired by the Bhopal Gas tragedy and the Singur tragedy.

Rahul Dholakia will make a film on the alcohol prohibition in Gujarat
The state of Gujarat has a Prohibition law on alcohol that prevents the sale, purchase, and consumption of alcoholic drinks. This law has been in force since May 1, 1960. This was mainly put to force as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi (who hailed from Gujarat).
Rahul Dholakia’s (of Parzania 2005 fame) next venture is based on the same issue and addresses how prohibition triggers the illegal selling, buying, and consumption of hooch (which can be poisonous sometimes). This issue has never been explored in Bollywood and it maybe possible that Dholakia’s next National Award is around the corner (Parzania won a National award for Best Direction) .
The film covers all related issues from revenues to religion, the politics of prohibition to communalism and the mafia involved. According to sources, there...

Seasoned actress Sarika, who started her career as a child artist in the late 1960s, says in over four decades there has been no marked improvement in the condition of young ones on movie sets and it can still be called 'child labour'. <p /><p>'Basic problems are still the same. It is said they have teachers coming on sets and proper time is given for homework, but nothing of that sort happens. It never used to happen then and things are still the same,' the 48-year-old, who is a mother of two daughters, told Ians in an interview. </p><p>'It's more glamourised now, but it can still be termed as child labour. Children are smarter now and that's why they are easier to work with,' said the actress who was seen as a child actor in films like 'Aashirwad', 'Satyakam', 'Jyoti' and 'Haar Jeet'.

spoke to him about the change of Indian cinema in recent years. Read on to see what Rahul Dholakia has to say about piracy, Slumdog Millionaire, the use of technology in films and much more.
What is the purpose of your visit to Holland?
I want to explore the possibilities of filming here in terms of location. I am working on a children’s film. It’s a fantasy film and I want to understand the various aspects of shooting here.

Rahul Dholakia, who has made a name of tackling sensitive issues, firstly in Parzania and then in the recently released Lamhaa, has been signed by Ravi Chopra to direct a film for the B R Chopra banner. This time Dholakia's film will be about loopholes in the legal system. Incidentally, the Chopras were in a legal tussle over the copyright of their latest film Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai that seems to have been adapted from the English film My Cousin Vinny. Looks like Dholakia's...

After Lamhaa and the almost-completed social satire Society, Rahul Dholakia is all set to direct a film for Ravi Chopra, again based on a "burning" issue. But this time the issue that Dholakia who made films on the Gujarat communal riots (Parzania) and Kashmir, is not political. It's about the loopholes in the legal system. Ironically, the Chopras got themselves into a legal budge over the copyright of their latest film Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai which was an adaptation of the Hollywood film My Cousin Vinny. Apparently, Dholakia's film is inspired by the Chopras' encounter with legal issues. Says Dholakia, "Right now it's slightly early to talk about the project. But yes it tackles legal issues. I can't comment on whether Mr. Bachchan is in the film. It is every director's dream to direct him." Rahul Dholakia's telescopic look at the militancy and Kashmir in Lamhaa has earned him...

Lamhaa opened in the theatres this Friday under a cloud of controversy. The movie that was sparked off by a stray remark made by a student during a screening of director Rahul Dholakia’s last film, Parzania, describing Kashmir as a “beautiful prison”, has been banned in the Middle East. It will not be screened in Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain and Oman because the UAE National Media Council Censorship Board believes the subject to be “highly objectionable”. Earlier, the premiere in Srinagar had been cancelled on “security” grounds and the film will not play in Kashmir. Both the no-shows have upset Sanjay ...

Movie Review: Lamhaa; Star cast: Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu, Kunal Kapoor and Anupam Kher; Director: Rahul Dholakia; Rating: ***1/2 – Definitely deserves a watch.
July 16: While the burning issue of Kashmir has been handled before on the Indian screen rarely any effort has been such well researched, carrying such depth and effectively narrated with technical finesse as Rahul Dholakia (Parzania) directed Lamhaa. Taking you straight into ‘the world’s most dangerous place’, Dholakia offers a very disturbing piece that brings out many emotions out of you.

Lamhaa releases today and the film sounds mighty exciting primarily due to the fact that the man at the helm of affairs is a National Award winning director Rahul Dholakia who has excelled earlier as well in his issue based film Parzania. Add to that the fact that the promos of Lamhaa have managed to make an instant impact, courtesy the thriller format in which the story of this Sanjay Dutt-Bipasha Basu starrer is being told and one can safely presume that the film should work for...

July 16, 2010: Rahul Dholakia is a National Award winning director but he is not wearing this as an ace up his sleeves. His Parzania was an issue-based film and so is Lamhaa. However, the filmmaker has no qualms in admitting that he wanted to tell this story in a hardcore commercial format so that it reaches out to a wider section of audience. Told in a thriller format, Lamhaa is now up for release and Rahul’s ‘untold story’ about Kashmir is all set to be unveiled. With confidence looming large in his voice, Rahul recollects the incidents during the pre-production that shaped up Lamhaa.

The Sanjay Dutt-Bipasha Basu film by National Award winning director Rahul Dholakia, Lamhaa, that is to open worldwide on July 16 has been banned in the Middle East. The news was communicated to the film’s producer, Bunty Walia, after prints subtitled in Arabic had been dispatched. "Writing a blog for lamhaa- this week", Rahul Dholakia promised on Twitter a few days ago. And indeed the director of Parzania fame whose Kashmir film Lamhaa will be released on Friday has a lot to tell - about the two and a half years of preparation and research, about the people in Kashmir he met and talked to (hundred and fifty recorded interviews) and about the production of this film where the crew more than once was in danger to be shot.
The first blog entry Lamhaa: The Beautiful Prison was online on Sunday. Here Rahul gives us parts of an interview he made with a separatist leader in Kashmir, and tells how the Lamhaa crew shot a scene in the Jama Masjid, and that too on 'Aakhri Jumma': "We had to position our cameras eight hours prior to the speech and stay put. No food, no water,...
