Nothing like TPB series but... simply beautiful!
pluck-122 May 2007
oh boy where do i start? this short is an excellent example of just how clever and talented the team of trailer park boys is... it is like nothing you'd ever expect from that team but still you can't do nothing but feel oh so sorry for the cart boy and eventually have to sweep a tear away... this short is so full of emotions, all the characters act brilliantly, it feels just so real... if you somehow have the chance to get a hold of season 1 & 2 DVDs be sure to check this one out! couldn't think of a better short i've seen in the last couple of years, so this really is highly recommended to anyone interested in this beautiful art we call "short film"!

Great Short

This is a great short from the Trailer Park Boys gang. This was made five years prior to the series so the characters are not quite the same as the series (names and roles). Mike Smith stars as the cart boy, while his cat is named Bubbles. In the series Mike Smith is "Bubbles" and he has a plethora of "kitties" which are a high priority in his unusual life, living in a utility shed. The two security guards in the short, are actually Ricky and Julian in the series, and both are small time criminals looking to make a fast buck and retire (Freedom 35). It is actually better to see The Cart Boy after you are familiar with the series to better understand the character development, but all in all, a great short film.

Before the boys

Warning: Spoilers
"The Cart Boy" is a Canadian English-language film from 1995, so this one is already over 20 years old. The director is Mike Clattenburg and he is also one of the writers. The other two writers credited here are the actors who play the security guards in here. This is a story of a man who steals shopping carts and the two employees who confront him about that. We find out the very same time as they do about the backgrounds and motivations of his "crime". So yeah, that's all there is to it. this one is only 10 minutes long and was made by the same people who went on to make the Trailer Park Boys stuff and have been doing so until very recently actually. I have not seen the latter, so my review only refers to this short film here. Honestly, I think it was the filmmakers attention to go for weird and awkward here and it is working out from this perspective, but I don't think it is working out from a comedy perspective. The ending actually feels much more like drama than comedy. The last scene with the guards pushing down a cart to the man is kinda nice though. However, getting down to the cart of things (oh yes I did), I don't think this was a memorable or entertaining watch whatsoever. I give it a thumbs-down and hope Clattenburg and his gang stepped things up since the 90s. Only worth seeing for the biggest Trailer Park Boys lovers. Oh and for cat lovers too.

This was a comedy?

Nothing humorous or even slightly interesting here.

I would rate this "R" for language. If this film really had writers, someone should buy them a dictionary. Every other word is "f***", not a trait of articulate people.

A sad, pointless film; yet, unfortunately I have dealt with people like these in my own life.

Frankly, I did not see anything creative here. I only suffered through it because it was listed as a "short" (which seemed to plod on forever), I could hardly wait for it to end. Depressing - uninspiring - a waste of time.

Have you ever eaten a used sock? If not, I would suggest trying it before you actually watch this movie because the movie will actually leave a worse taste in your mouth and for some reason, it will give you cancer. Maybe it was the fact that I can't hear and I had to have subtitles on for this, maybe it was because the director of this movie only made it as a joke on humanity...or it could have also been because of the horrible acting, writing, directing, and gay ass cat....but this movie was horrible. After I was done watching this, I noticed how warts started to grow on my retinas and my dog died. I would suggest you give this movie out as a gag gift, kinda like when you mail blow up dolls to your teacher or when you slap someone you don't know out of the blue.
