The film was completed on 16 August 2004 at 5:15 p.m., the exact time the bodies of the Boles family were discovered. This was a complete coincidence, and was not realized until the following day when the producer's wife made a comment about it.
The producer's mother worked at Hughes Aircraft in Fullerton, California at the same time Darlene Boles was murdered. In fact, she worked with a man who was an initial suspect (or at the very least a "person of interest") in the case.
On the last day of shooting at the actual murder location, the mother of one of the child actors became very ill. Emergency personnel were called, and the Captain of the response team was once a suspect in the case. When the filmmakers learned this, he was asked for an interview. That interview yielded some compelling information, and the interview appears in the film.
