Having Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac as the leads of any film would be enough to warrant a ticket purchase, but even moreso when one of them isn’t in any sort of spandex. This opportunity arrives shortly as they’ve teamed for The Promise, which premieres tomorrow at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the first trailer has landed today.
Directed by Terry George (Hotel Rwanda), it follows an Armenian medical student (Oscar Isaac), an artist (Charlotte Le Bon), and a worldly American journalist (Christian Bale) who form a love triangle amid the chaos of the First World War. The first trailer sells the sort of sweeping period romance epic we don’t get enough of these days, so hopefully it delivers.
Check out the trailer below ahead of a Tiff premiere.

We fell hard for Terence Davies‘ Sunset Song this past Tiff, proclaiming the Lewis Grassic Gibson adaptation a triumph worthy of Dreyer, one containing “many compositions and gestures beyond just the easy-to-praise 70mm vistas [that] feel destined to replay forever and ever in the mind.” There’s a general consensus that it should be seen on a big screen, and so the pending theatrical release — further highlighted by this, a U.S. trailer — is one of 2016’s most-anticipated happenings.
While I’ll avoid this preview for hope of entering Davies’ film as blind as possible, feel free to partake for yourself. In the meantime, however, consider our review, which goes on to say, “The camera movements take on a sensitive quality (retracting during a rape scene), but also the same bittersweet nature that’s found when swooping through the spaces of Davies’ childhood spaces in the “Tammy” montage from The Long Day Closes.

With Curtain Call, we asked our team what some of their most memorable and satisfactory finales were in the realm of gaming, and these entries are the result. Please note that they may include a bevy of spoilers concerning the endings in question and the plots they pertain to. You’ve been warned!
It’s rare when I see something so thoroughly misinterpreted by just about everyone. Maybe it’s because games don’t cover easily misinterpreted themes that often, or maybe it’s because the way games tackle certain subjects lends to one interpretation, even if the polar opposite was supposed to be read into it.
The latter is what I think happened to Red Dead Redemption. This game explores a number of themes. It’s a story of redemption, it’s a story of change, it’s a story about a clash of ideals, it deconstructs the western outlaw,...

This is a reprint of our review from the 2014 BFI London Film Festival. The First World War was one of the greatest, most terrible conflicts and losses of life in the history of humanity, but curiously, it's been relatively under-represented on screen, aside from a smattering of pictures like Oscar-winner "All Quiet On The Western Front," Stanley Kubrick's "Paths Of Glory," Peter Weir's "Gallipoli," and most recently, Steven Spielberg's "War Horse." Perhaps it's because it was less of a just war than its bigger sequel, perhaps it's that it was a particularly gruesome slog of mud and sacrifice, perhaps it was because America only entered the war three years in, but there's no doubt that the conflict has been seen in the movies much less than WWII, or even Vietnam. I promise – it wasn’t my plan to have seven of the ten films on this portion of the list focus on World War II. But, if we look back at the biggest international conflicts of all time, World War II is the one that provides the most opportunity. It’s a chance for a number of different countries to look at the same war from different perspectives. In this portion alone, there’s a French film, a German film, a Hungarian film, a couple British/American films, and a few American films – all about varied aspects of World War II.

The first world war began almost by accident. It ended just as strangely.
The series begins where most every retelling begins, with Gavrilo Princip, the assassin who killed Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. But it begins with an image of Belgrade today, where Princip took his gun for target practice (at which he was ill adept). After a few quirks of fate, this rather pathetic anarchist sparked one of the greatest global calamities the world has ever known one hundred years ago this June. The series then steps back and sets the stage for that event. Such a full and epic approach is exactly what one would expect from this ten-part documentary The First World War: The Complete Series (2003), based on the book by Hew Strachan, released for the centenary of the war's beginning. If you went to high school in America, then you well know the look and feel...

You may have heard of a little Showtime series called The Borgias. The Emmy-Nominated show created by Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, The Company of Wolves, Interview With The Vampire) is an epic depiction full of violence, sex and betrayal that charts the rise of the 16th Century’s most famous family as they slowly dominate Europe and eliminate anyone who stands in their way.
With a stellar cast including the likes of Jeremy Irons, Gina McKee, Steven Berkoff and Derek Jacobi, what’s not to love? If you have an itch for Historical Drama, perhaps this is the next series to scratch that itch for you, and allow you to immerse yourself in the decadent courts of Rome.

Barry Humphries is to star in Sky1's comedy Chickens.
The star - best known for his comic creation Dame Edna Everage - will appear alongside show creators and stars Simon Bird, Jonny Sweet and Joe Thomas.
Chickens was originally aired as a pilot by Channel 4, but was later picked up to series by Sky after Channel 4 declined to order more episodes.
The First World War sitcom follows three men left behind in a world of women as the nation's heroes are fighting the good fight on foreign soil.
Humphries will play Mr Armstrong - headmaster at the local school - while Sally Phillips will also appear as village outcast Miss Trimble.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for three of the funniest and most talented men in the Northern hemisphere to work with me," quipped Humphries. "I am very proud of my young supporting cast, whose names I cannot remember at the moment.

This may sound strange, but the whole militaria collection started when I was about six years-old. My first item can be traced back till then. Now we have around 80,000 items. Our production becomes more sophisticated and we continuously research and collect more. The first professional job we got was in the 1993 ceremony for the coming back of the unknown soldier of the Australian Army. They brought one of our soldiers back from France and reburied him here after a memorial. It was my task to ensure all the war uniforms were correctly worn. I designed, manufactured and made them. After that, we started to get more and more professional jobs. At the same time I kept researching and working on history,...

Over the past few months, we’ve added a weekly Friday feature rounding up the new releases coming to the big screen each week, courtesy of our Mr. Rob Keeling, giving you a taste of all the brilliant(/not so brilliant) films entering your local cinemas at the weekend.
It recently occurred to me to start up a similar weekly feature, instead rounding up all* the films making their way to the shelves of your local video stores (and of course, increasingly, supermarkets) at the start of each week.
There are so many brilliant films often released in close proximity to each other that sometimes it’s just not possible to see everything you want to see on the big screen, not to mention the fact that not all films are released in a nearby cinema (particularly if you live outside of London). Joanna Johnston is a multi-award nominated costume designer with an excitingly eclectic filmography. From Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Back to the Future Part II (1989) and The Sixth Sense (1999) to About a Boy (2002) and Valkyrie (2008). Including most famously Saving Private Ryan (1998), she is now carving a niche in military dress and uniform. Although, considering the subtlety of all Ms. Johnston’s costume design – the cleverly unchanging ensemble worn by Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense for example – this is only a small part of her work.

He had the world at his paws, and earned $1,000 a week
The creature at the centre of this remarkable book is an enigma. We never really know what he is thinking, and in fact he may not think at all, in the ratiocinatory sense. Susan Orlean presents to us a being who is driven by instinct, operating by a set of large, simple affects – love, honour, bravery and above all loyalty. He remains faithful throughout his life to the companion with whom at an early age he found himself paired, and while he acknowledges and even shows affection towards others, in truth he loves only his best friend. "He had become," Orlean writes, "as familiar to me as a family member, and, as is often case with a family member, he also remained a mystery. He was at once ingenuous and impenetrable …"
And then there is the dog.

The first world war epic filmed in Devon and Wiltshire could only have been made in the UK, according to the director
It was filmed in Devon and Wiltshire, is packed with the UK's top acting talent and saw the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at its royal premiere on Sunday night. Now director Steven Spielberg has said that he regards War Horse as his first truly British film.
"This could only have been shot in England," he told a press conference in London on Monday morning. "After I heard the reaction last night at the Odeon in Leicester Square, I realised that I'd made my first British film with War Horse. Through and through."

"This could only have been shot in England," he told a press conference in London on Monday morning. "After I heard the reaction last night at the Odeon in Leicester Square, I realised that I'd made my first British film with War Horse. Through and through."

Set during World War I, War Horse tells the story of "the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert (Jeremy Irvine), who tames and trains him." Based on early screenings, the drama is heading into Oscar season with very positive buzz, especially after the National Board of review named War Horse one of the best 10 films of the year. Tom Hiddleston, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Toby Kebbell also star. War Horse opens on December 25. Watch the clips after the jump. [1] In the simplest, most literal terms, the very title of Steven Spielberg's War Horse explains exactly what the film is about. But as you'd expect with any sweeping period epic from a legendary Oscar-winning director released during prestigious movie season, the themes of War Horse run much, much deeper. Normally, you'd have to watch the movie to find out exactly what those themes are. However, in the case of War Horse, DreamWorks has released a TV spot featuring stars Jeremy Irvine, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis, Emily Watson and Celine Buckens helpfully explaining that what the drama is really about is "bravery," "loyalty," "humanity," "what connects us," and so on. Watch it after the jump. [via Deadline [2]] I honestly think War Horse will be very good. I picked up the book over the Thanksgiving holiday and enjoyed it immensely, and early buzz about the movie has been positive -- our...

DreamWorks has released a new TV spot for Steven Spielberg's new World War I film War Horse. The spot features footage of the film mixed in with interviews of the actors talking about the film and what it's about. This looks like its going to be a wonderfully moving film, and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
The film stars Jeremy Irvine as the lead character Albert, a young man whose horse, Joey, is sold off to the French Calvalry, leading Albert to fight in the trenches of Wwi to try to reunite with the animal. Irvine is surrounded by a great cast that includes Emily Watson, Peter Mullan, David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch and Stephen Graham, Tom Hiddleston, Celine Buckens and Niels Arestrup. Also in the cast are David Kross, Patrick Kennedy, Rainer Bock, Nicolas Bro, Leonar Carow and Robert Emmms.

Dreamworks have released three new TV spots for their new movie, War Horse which is released 13th January. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis, Tom Hiddleston, Emily Watson, David Kross, Peter Mullan, Eddie Marsan but from all I’ve seen so far, the real star is the horse which isn’t surprising considering the title.

The only thing to make the anguish of football games I had to endure during this (now passed) Thanksgiving were various ads for War Horse, Steven Spielberg‘s first live-action film in more than three and a half years. Personally, I think the film looks great, both in terms of its plain old story and visual sense. I was able to fully realize that, although footage from it looks nice on a computer screen, seeing it on a large HDTV is quite a step up. (I can attest in this case that a theater is, of course, the optimal setting, but it was a nice in-between.)
Regardless, these three new TV spots help give an idea of the scope and emotional punch we’ll probably be getting, in addition to John Williams‘ score that’s already been put online. But, most importantly, I find myself further and further pulled into the story that,...

We won’t be seeing it until December, but Steven Spielberg‘s The Adventures of Tintin is already a bonafide hit overseas (our UK review here). But what about his Wwi drama Oscar hopeful War Horse? The film, which hits just a few days after Tintin here in the states, won’t be appearing at any film festivals, and we haven’t heard a peep about the final product.
That all changes today, as DreamWorks is avoiding New York and Los Angeles, holding public-only screenings in heartland states and others such as Colorado, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Kansas leading up to its December 25th release. This is a strategy that worked for their recent smash hit The Help (over $175m in box office and on its way to Oscar glory), so it looks like they are trying to repeat the same magic.

A new trailer for Steven Spielberg's War Horse has debuted and it continues the slow reveal for the film which hits theaters on December 25.
I was discussing this film just last night and it's Best Picture prospects as I currently have it positioned in the #2 slot in my Best Picture predictions, just behind Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which recently had its first trailer debut to which some really enjoyed and others considered "sappy and emotionally manipulative." I wonder, are you getting the same vibe from this film? Also, do you see any Best Actor or Actress prospects coming out of this one? Jeremy Irvine? Emily Watson perhaps?
Check out the latest trailer below and let me know your thoughts and for more on War Horse click here.

A fantastic new international trailer has been released for Steven Spielberg's World War I epic, War Horse. The film is based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo. There's no doubt it's going to be one of those awe inspiring films, and I can't wait to see it.

The marketing is starting to kick into gear for Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the book War Horse. Until recently we'd seen only one teaser trailer, but the poster arrived not long ago, and now there is a full UK trailer that shows more of the character of the film. This trailer relies far less upon the monologue from Niels Arestrup than did the first trailer [1], and it rings with a simple cry: "be brave!" Check it out below. Good to see Tom Hiddleston get a line there. And the very classic grandeur of the film is starting to show; if Spielberg has really been able to imbue the horse with character this could become an all-time tearjerker. War Horse stars Jeremy Irvine as Albert, the young man whose horse, Joey, is the center of the film, and also features Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Benedict Cumberbatch,...

Steven Spielberg is clearly have some fun with The Adventures of Tintin this December, but his big Oscar play is the Wwi drama War Horse being released a few days after, and it has never been more apparent than in the latest trailer. I think the teaser actually works better, since this is just more of the same. We only get a brief glimpse at dialogue from Tom Hiddleston (Midnight in Paris, Thor) and few more peeks at some of the battlefield footage, but I’m left quite unimpressed by this piece.
Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, The Hobbit), Patrick Kennedy (Atonement), Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Niels Arestrup, Eddie Marsan, and Peter Mullan all star. Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) and Richard Curtis (Pirate Radio) adapted Michael Morpurgo‘s novel-turned-stage play. Check out the new trailer below via Empire.

War Horse, one of two movies Steven Spielberg is attached to, will hit the big screen on December 25th. So far the only marketing we have seen is moving trailer that proves it is an Oscar contender. But now the film, based Michael Morpurgo‘s novel and the stage play, has its very first poster, and if you haven’t already noticed it is based on the book cover.
Directed by Spielberg, War Horse is based on the popular novel and stage play written by Michael Morpurgo. The story is about a boy named Albert (played by Jeremy Irvine) who goes through great lengths to retrieve his horse after he is sold to a World War I Calvary.
The film also stars Emily Watson, Peter Mullan, David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Niels Arestrup, Nicolas Bro, David Kross, Leonard Carow, Rainer Bock, Robert Emms and Patrick Kennedy
EW provided the first look at the poster.

Check out the new poster for DreamWorks Pictures’ War Horse, director Steven Spielberg’s epic adventure tale of loyalty, hope and tenacity set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War. (courtesy of EW) In case you missed it, watch the trailer from earlier this summer. It goes without saying that War Horse will be one of the big players in the upcoming awards season.
Synopsis:
War Horse begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets – British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter – before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

We’ve just been sent the first poster for Steven Spielberg’s latest film, War Horse, and we thought we’d share it with you.
With Spielberg directing his version of Michael Morpurgo’s novel, itself already well-known as a stage play, we can expect a severe heartstring-tugging in amongst all the horseplay.
The non-equine cast looks pretty solid with Jeremy Irvine leading Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston Peter Mullan, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, David Kross, Stephen Graham and Patrick Kennedy.
A synopsis? Well, why not…

Steven Spielberg's second movie of 2011, War Horse, opens right at the end of the year, on December 28. Accordingly, Dreamworks has been holding its cards close so far, with only one trailer [1] released to show what Spielberg has done with the adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's novel and the stage play it spawned. But here's the first poster, showing Albert, played by Jeremy Irvine, with his beloved horse, Joey. The horse is sold and put to work as a calvalry mount during World War I, leading Albert to go on a mad run to France to recover his steed. The film also stars Emily Watson, Peter Mullan, David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Niels Arestrup, Nicolas Bro, David Kross, Leonard Carow, Rainer Bock, Robert Emms and Patrick Kennedy. See the full one-sheet below. EW [2] debuts the poster and points out its resemblance to the cover [3] of Morpurgo's novel. With three months before opening,...
