There’s a beautiful scene in Jia Zhangke’s 2004 film The World in which the protagonist, Tao, crosses paths with an industrial worker nicknamed Little Sister on the rooftop of an unfinished building. They chat aimlessly beneath towering spires of exposed rebar until a massive plane soars overhead, drowning out their voices. “Tao, who flies on those planes?” he asks, to which she responds, “Who knows…I don’t know anybody who’s ever been on a plane.”
It’s this precise contrast of stasis and flux, of the sublime and the quotidian, of simple personal dreams swallowed up by massive national ambitions, that characterizes Liu Jian’s newest feature, Art College 1994. Jia also lends his voice to one of its characters: Gu Yongqing, a “roving artist abroad” who speaks of “the mysterious power of art” during a visiting lecture at the titular art college. This is Liu’s third animated feature film,...

The biographical documentary is a genre that lends itself to a reliable storytelling formula. First, we look back on the origins of the subject; we are introduced to some of the key figures that helped them along the way; we are shown the beginning of their career all the way to the end, and are then left to contemplate their legacy.
Due to the predictability of this format, these documentaries can often come off as by-the-numbers, taking us on a telegraphed emotional journey intended as a crowdpleaser. But every once in a while, there’s a subject who is so unique that their story elevates the formula. Allee Willis is one such subject, with a life story that’s energetic, colorful and invigorating to witness. Director Alexis Manya Spraic crafts a documentary that strives to be just as fascinating as its subject.

Acclaimed actress Glenn Close displayed her good sense of humor when she shared a series of selfies on Instagram that showed her face bruised from a recent medical procedure.
In the candid close-up shots, Close playfully poses for the camera with tousled hair and a cozy cardigan. Alongside the images, she wrote, “I think this is going to be a particularly Good day,” in anticipation of her 77th birthday.
She acknowledged the bruises and explained that she had undergone a minor procedure to address a small break in her nose, but emphasized that she still felt as beautiful as ever.
While Close’s Instagram account typically features scenic landscapes and occasional political posts, the actress recently shared a video of herself making goofy faces.
“It’s morning in a new place away from home. I’m wishing I didn’t have to wash and brush my hair. #bedhead,” she wrote in the caption.

Hollywood faces a significant imbalance when it comes to its stars. There are some actors like Adam Sandler who can’t separate the profession from real life and cast his friends and family as characters in movies. Then, there are others who vanish into a role for years, portraying their commitment to the art.
Actors like Dwayne Johnson and Adam Sandler often portray characters close to their real-life persona
While bringing their real-life persona into a character is not necessarily a bad thing, there are actors whom the audiences love for it and some whom they hate for the same. Here’s a look at actors who often portray characters close to their public image.

The Protector of Hell’s Kitchen is all set to return to the screens after a long time with Daredevil: Born Again. Yet, as happy with anticipation about his return as fans are, some of the updates about the upcoming show aren’t making it seem all too appreciable, especially the most recent potential spoiler about an MCU hero.
Daredevil: Born Again
As it seems according to recent reports, there are chances that a major hero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whom fans had been waiting to see for so long, just might end up dying in the most bothersome way possible. And fans won’t be happy about it if this comes true, considering how the hero in the talk is none other than the fan-favorite White Tiger, aka Hector Ayala.

Even the most fervent follower of RuPaul's Drag Race can admit that it's an exhausting time to be a fan. What began as a low-budget quasi-parody of America's Next Top Model has blossomed into a multimedia drag empire, winning multiple Emmys, and changing the face(-face-face) of drag in the mainstream. But with the flagship series, All Stars spin-offs, international versions, Global All Stars, Versus-the-World seasons — and that's just the competition shows — it has become a full-time gig to keep up with even a fraction of these shows.

Ahead of the release of the anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (read our review), Edgar Wright – who serves as executive producer on that series and was a key part of assembling the returning cast, in addition to directing the original movie – reflected on the challenges of marketing Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. And no, it had nothing to do with selling Michael Cera as a leading man.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Edgar Wright said it was a difficulty pitching Scott Pilgrim vs. the World to both the press and audiences since it is a genuine mish-mash of styles. “We knew, from some of the screenings we had, it’s not about whether there’s an audience out there for the movie. It’s about how to reach them. Maybe a film that has more than one thing going on, you always have to bring a film down to an elevator pitch.

Netflix is finally opening the doors to the newly restored Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood this week, and in a first-look preview ahead of its November 9 reopening, the streamer and its partner, the nonprofit American Cinematheque, highlighted some of the enhancements and a screening schedule through the end of 2023.

The latest feature from David Fincher, a big-budget drama series from Steven Knight and Shawn Levy, and an Oscar hopeful starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are among the standout new additions hitting Netflix in November.
With The Killer, Fincher reteams with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the graphic novel written by Alexis Nolent. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and debuts on Netflix on Nov. 10, stars Michael Fassbender as a shadowy unnamed assassin and features a cast that includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Gabriel Polanco, Kerry O’Malley, Emiliano Pernía, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of The Killer described the film as “a satisfyingly retro, location-hopping genre exercise with fisticuffs, gadgets (albeit ones bought from Amazon) and smooth-talking antagonists that all plays like a tongue-in-cheek spoof of James Bond movies.”

In episode 2 of “Untucked,” the 11 remaining queens reflected on the latest challenge and discussed the upcoming elimination. Smashing Pumpkins are one of the most prolific bands around — they just released Atum, a 33-track rock opera — but they have even more music we haven’t heard. During a takeover of SiriusXM’s Lithium, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin revealed that the band recorded both a psychedelic album and a Christmas album during the Covid-19 shutdown that no one’s heard.

Since it premiered on HBO in 2018, Succession has gotten a lot of attention for its performances, intricate storytelling, and high-stakes drama. But the show could inadvertently take one of its stars into a completely different genre going forward. Here’s how Succession just might lead actor Kieran Culkin down the road toward becoming an action movie star.
Kieran Culkin | Theo Wargo/Getty Images Kieran Culkin has been acting since 1990’s ‘Home Alone’
Culkin might have gained an entirely new fan base with his role as Roman Roy on Succession. But the actor has been working in Hollywood for more than 30 years. Culkin made his film debut opposite big brother Macaulay in 1990’s Home Alone and continued to work as a child actor throughout the decade, including films such as Father of the Bride, Nowhere to Run, and She’s All That.
Beyond that, Culkin has stretched his acting muscles in a variety of other projects.

This post contains heavy spoilers for Knock at the Cabin and The Cabin at the End of the World.
Andrew stares at his husband Eric, no longer able to contain his disbelief. The couple, played by Ben Aldridge and Jonathan Groff, have spent the day undergoing a horrific ordeal, forced by the hulking but gentle Leonard (Dave Bautista) and his three associates to choose to sacrifice a member of their family, including their young daughter Wen (Kristen Cui). If they don’t make that choice, then the apocalypse will occur.
Andrew thinks he and Eric are together in their resistance, fueled by his conviction that Leonard is simply a bigot who put together an elaborate plot to torture them. But Andrew starts to see a break in his husband’s eyes. He sees Eric’s face soften, a look of resolute compassion replacing the fear and anger that was there before.

Jeff Goldblum took over the New York Comic Com virtual stage on Thursday to tease the upcoming second season of his Disney+ series The World According to Jeff Goldblum—specifically the show’s second episode about magic.
Deadline’s Rosy Cordero served as moderator of the panel which included Goldblum, Penn Jillette and Teller of Penn & Teller, and street magician Erik Blackwell. Penn, Teller, and Blackwell also feature in the episode.
“[Magic] is not really an optical illusion thing or a viewing thing—it really is a mental thing,” said Penn Jillette. “Essentially, we’re lying. One of the joys of magic and one of the most important things in life is trying to determine what is true and what’s not, and human beings aren’t particularly good at that but we do our best. Scientific method has helped that tremendously but we still have to make snap judgments on that.

This mirrors a similar even that Netflix is doing this week.
Chapek acknowledge during the conference, “We love theatrical exhibition,” those remarks coming from the CEO of a studio that has experimented with controversial distribution models during the pandemic; but keeping the latest Marvel movie purely on a theatrical window yielding over $305M WW.

Exclusive: Forced to halt production after just three weeks of shooting in South Africa when the Covid pandemic struck back in March 2020, and picking up again in Romania seven months later, Around The World In 80 Days is due to have its world premiere at Canneseries on October 10.
Star David Tennant, who plays English gentleman-turned-adventurer Phileas Fogg, is expected on the Riviera to unveil the first two episodes of this mega-adaptation of the Jules Verne classic. An airdate has yet to be set, but is likely around the holidays via such outlets as France Télévisions, PBS/Masterpiece, the BBC, Rai and Zdf. Check out the first-look teaser above.
Joining Tennant in the eight-part adventure are French actor Ibrahim Koma (Oss 177) as Fogg’s irrepressible valet, Passepartout, and Leonie Benesch (The Crown) as determined journalist, Abigail ‘Fix’ Fortescue.
A Slim Film + Television and Federation co-production for the European Alliance, the series boasts a new spin on Fogg.
Life On Mars creator and 80 Days head writer, Ashley Pharoah says, “We wanted Fogg yes to be a preposterously upper middle class over-educated Englishman, but I wanted to give him a sort of childlike sense of wonder because he’s never traveled, he’s never left London or his club. As soon as I hit on that, I thought it’s a love letter to the world, if that isn’t a bit pretentious. He goes to Paris and India and Hong Kong and Yemen and he’s so excited to see a camel, the different colors and cultures. It felt like resetting our relationship with traveling and seeing the world like that.”
In terms of scoring Tennant for the lead, former Kudos boss Simon Crawford Collins, who runs Slim Film + Television, says, “We wanted somebody who could believably do the action adventure, could play the stiff-upper-lip Englishman, but at the same time you never fall out of love with him and you really want to get under the veneer of that and go, ‘Wow, this is actually a complex man.’ David manages that so brilliantly.”
Pharoah, who is also an executive producer, hints at more Fogg adventures to come. “We are in the early stages of wondering — if this goes well — if we could do it again. Taking those three characters and doing a different adventure with them.” Hopefully not under the same conditions, however, which Pharoah recalls as “a really hard shoot.”
It was also expensive, as pandemic-related issues added about £4M in costs, Crawford Collins tells Deadline. “The first lockdown was a killer, but once we got going again we felt very blessed.” Production in South Africa was originally stopped in March 2020 and picked up again in November in Romania. “In an ideal world we would have carried on filming in South Africa where our sets were, but South Africa was coming out slowly so we did the big shift to Romania,” adds the executive producer. This year, production was able to move back to South Africa and the result is “very vibrant and cinematic.”
Around The World In 80 Days counts co-production partners Masterpiece in the U.S., Peu Communications in South Africa, and Belgium’s Be-films and Rtbf. Daro Film associate produces. Seven West Media has also backed the production and will broadcast in Australia. The series has further been acquired by the BBC in the UK and Rts in Switzerland.
While there are myriad partners on the series, Crawford Collins says development and production were “very straightforward.” France Télévisions “came back saying, ‘We love this and really want to make it and we don’t want to be the secondary broadcaster.’ They wanted to be lead, so immediately put in a sizable amount of money. It was a wonderful building block and they then brought the Alliance partners on board.”
The entire process (apart from the shutdown), “was incredibly stress free… We never had any big disagreements… The specter of Europudding still sort of lives heavily in our minds and we all know those days. But I think the trouble with that is when you have a project originated just to secure financing then it really shows through. The difference is that we had a clear vision of what we wanted to say, but just knew we needed a lot of people to help fund it.”
Also starring as series regulars in 80 Days are Jason Watkins (Des) and Peter Sullivan (Poldark). Guest actors include Lindsay Duncan (A Discovery Of Witches), Dolly Wells (Dracula), Richard Wilson (Merlin), Faical Elkihel (The Spy), Anthony Flanagan (The Terror), Gary Beadle (Patrick Melrose) and Giovanni Scifoni (Doc – Nelle Tue Mani).
Around The World In 80 Days is adapted by a team of writers led by Pharoah and Caleb Ranson (Child Of Mine). Steve Barron (The Durrells) directs with Brian Kelly (Downton Abbey) and the late Charles Beeson (The Mentalist).
Federation Entertainment handles distribution rights. Exec producers are Crawford Collins for Slim, Lionel Uzan and Pascal Breton for Federation, Winnie Serite for Peu and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.

This weekend saw the debut of two appealing studio titles, neither of which will be in theaters. “Without Remorse,” Paramount’s relaunch of their Tom Clancy franchise and “The Mitchells vs the Machines,” from Sony Animation, launched on Amazon Prime and Netflix, respectively, free to subscribers. On the Netflix chart, “Mitchells” immediately placed at #1.
The cinemas could have used their momentum. Last weekend, “Mortal Kombat” and “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” surpassed expectations with openings over $20 million. This weekend, the only new release was horror film “Separation,” which earned $1.8 million. “Mortal” and “Demon.” each fell over 70 percent.
It isn’t unusual for big openers to drop half or more in their second weeks, but new competition opening is usually a contributing factor. It also appears that the titles’ audiences showed less crossover interest. Total business for the weekend will be around $24 million, about 60 percent less than last week.

Goldblum will play elven sorcerer Balmur on the upcoming season of the audio series.

It is latest unusual move for Goldblum, whose Disney+ series The World According To Jeff Goldblum was renewed for a second season.
Dark Dice’s quest takes place after a failed attempt to save the world and follows the team’s hunt for revenge against the other player-controlled team. Could this be the year Netflix finally takes home the Oscar for Best Picture? The streaming giant, whose subscriptions have skyrocketed during the pandemic, has several, diverse choices angling for a nomination. “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank” and “Da Five Bloods.” All have their fans and backers in the industry, with actors from each of these films expected to get nominations.
While Netflix spends mightily on promotion, it has yet to win the top prize at the Oscars, suggesting that Hollywood still might not recognize the trendy platform as equal to the old-fashioned movie screen. Case in point: In 2019, the Mexican family drama “Roma” was lavished with 10 nominations, with a rare double nomination for Best Picture and Best International Film. It was easy for the Academy to honor the Spanish-language film with the latter award, but reserve its highest honor for the Universal Studios picture “Green Book.

Directed by Zach Woods the story of David depicts a father torn between life at home and his career as a therapist. In the film, we see a young man called David, played by William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) who is depressed and confesses his need for suicide. This is where he reaches out to his therapist, played by Will Ferrell who agrees to see him for an emergency session. But David isn’t the only one who needs help…
In Woods’ directorial debut, this short film (running time of only 11 minutes) brings you Will Ferrell like you’ve never seen him before. So used to the slapstick humour from films like Step Brothers, Anchorman, The Other Guys, Daddy’s Home and Zoolander, we finally peek behind the curtain to get a short glimpse into the more serious version of Mr Ferrell. David is of course a fusion of dark comedy and dramatic tension,...

Cynthia Ann Parker was about nine years old when she was taken by Comanche warriors during an attack on her family’s settlement. She lived with the Native American tribe for 24 years, married into it, and eventually had Comanche children. When she was finally “saved” by Texas Rangers, she hardly recognized her old way of life or the culture she was thrust back into. Her fate was a tragedy, but her story became the stuff of legend, even inspiring one of the greatest Westerns ever made, John Ford’s The Searchers.
The legacy of Ford’s epic, as well as the real Cynthia, weighs heavily on Paul Greengrass’ News of the World, an unexpectedly tender and affectionate drama about a “rescuer” and the European child he’s discovered some years after she was taken and assimilated into a Kiowa tribe.

Get your hot topic graphic tees and turn on some Clash inspired rock music, we’re going back to 2010 for this week’s installment of Gay Best Friend. Inspired by comments from readers Scott C and Jesus Alonso, we returned to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World for the first time since seeing it in theaters 10 years ago. It turned out to be a fascinating watch in more ways than one, so thank you for the suggestion!
It’s fitting we’re examining the role of Wallace Wells, played by Kieran Culkin, 10 years later. Culkin has graduated from “Maculely Culkin’s talented brother” to stardom thanks to his Emmy-nominated work in Succession. Additionally, in a movie stuffed with zaniness and stylization, Wallace’s role as the Gbf is more as a stabilizing, grounding force. While it’s a small role, the film makes Wallace an interesting, modern portrait...

Universal Pictures has set the release date for “News of the World” for December 25, officially launching the post-Civil War drama starring Tom Hanks into the Oscar race. (Watch the trailer.) The film reunites Hanks with his “Captain Phillips” director Paul Greengrass and could become the vehicle that brings the two-time Academy Award winner his seventh acting nomination.
Hanks first broke through at the Oscars for playing Josh Baskin in the 1988 film “Big.” The fantasy comedy was directed by Penny Marshall and proved Hanks could be a major box office draw as well as a critical favorite. After losing his first bid to Dustin Hoffman for “Rainman,” Hanks waited five years to return to the Oscars. His portrayal of Andy Beckett in the legal drama “Philadelphia,” opposite Denzel Washington, earned Hanks his first win for Best Actor. The next year Hanks prevailed once more for his iconic role as the title character in “Forrest Gump.

The Final Fantasy 16 team released a small preview of the game’s world, protagonists, and plot, and it is loaded with many of the clichés that define the Final Fantasy series nearly 33 years after its debut.
It’s understandable if your mind goes to a negative place when you hear the word “cliché.” The word is most frequently used in a derogatory fashion (sometimes rightfully so), but when you’re talking about a series as old and celebrated as Final Fantasy, thoseclichés become more like traditions. They’re these little plot beats we dance to every time they come up because they make us feel like we’re home again.
So, based on what we know about the sequel so far, here are some of the best Final Fantasy clichés you can expect to see in Final Fantasy 16.

Vanessa Kirby was two days away from shooting Mission: Impossible 7 in Venice — reprising her role as the glamorous gunrunner known as the White Widow — when Paramount halted production. It was late February, and Italy had just recorded Europe’s then-worst outbreak of the novel coronavirus, at the time not officially labeled a pandemic. Tom Cruise’s billion-dollar blockbuster franchise had become the first major Hollywood casualty.
Seven months on, and with the film industry appearing irreversibly changed, Kirby is preparing her return to Venice. But it’s not for Mission: Impossible (she starts shooting that later in September). With The World to ...

One of the more popular of the later New World Pictures, this gory “worst fears” extravaganza builds on footage from previous Corman space operas and has engendered quite a cult following over the years. When you think of actors playing comic book characters, your mind tends to instantly jump to the ones that played the same role for a number of years that have become inextricably linked with the part, like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine or Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Brandon Routh is still best known for playing the title hero in Superman Returns, which he would eventually reprise in the Arrowverse’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” despite already having starred as Legends of Tomorrow’s Ray Palmer. Outside of the world of DC though, he also played a supporting role in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and took the lead in 2011’s forgotten box office bomb Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.
