– The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will be presented June 9 – 18, with 21 topical and provocative feature documentaries and panel discussions that showcase courageous resilience in challenging times. In an era of global advances by far-right forces into the political mainstream, assaults on the free press, and the rise of “citizen journalism,” festival organizers hope that the films in this year’s program can serve as inspiration and motivation for the audience, from seasoned activists to those searching for a role in local and global movements.
Now in its 28th edition, the Human Rights Watch Film Festival is co-presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and IFC Center. All screenings will be followed by in-depth discussions with filmmakers, film subjects, Human Rights Watch researchers, and special guests.

It took a few days, but one of the many titles at the SXSW 2017 film festival that came without distribution now has a home. Aaron Katz’s “Gemini,” which premiered in the festival’s Narrative Spotlight section, has sold all U.S. rights to newcomer Neon, the recently launched distribution company founded by Tom Quinn and Tim League.
The company entered a bidding war for the film during the festival against several competitors. ICM negotiated the deal. Sony Pictures Worldwide financed the production and retains all international rights.

“Gemini,” which marks Katz’s first feature since 2014’s “Land Ho!”, follows the efforts of a detective (John Cho) and a personal assistant (Lola Kirke) who must pick up the pieces after the disappearance of her employer, a celebrity actress (Zoë Kravitz). IndieWire reviewed the film here.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) kicks off its 16th annual Doc Fortnight on Thursday, a 10-day festival that includes 20 feature-length non-fiction films and 10 documentary shorts. This year’s lineup includes four world premieres and a number of North American and U.S. premieres.

The festival is far from the only major North American showcase for non-fiction cinema. Festivals ranging from Hot Docs to True/False have played key roles in the expanding documentary festival circuit. However, Doc Fortnight has maintained its own niche on the scene, by aiming to expose undiscovered stories and filmmakers, screening a range of documentaries from around the world and capturing the ways in which artists are pushing the boundaries of non-fiction filmmaking.

In 1978, Martin Scorsese shot a documentary called “American Boy: A Profile of Steven Prince” about his friend, a former Neil Diamond roadie and drug-addict best known for playing the small role of Easy Andy in “Taxi Driver.” Considered Scorsese’s “lost film,” the documentary was never released, though it lived on in bootleg copies.
In it, Scorsese interspersed home videos of Prince’s childhood with his narrations of his wild stories, including a particularly outrageous one about the time he plunged an adrenaline shot into the heart of a girl who had overdosed on heroin. The scene was made famous by Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” and Prince also tells the story in Richard Linklater’s “Waking Life.”

Director: Juwan Chung. Review Adam Wing. With his second feature Juwan Chung (Cake) paints a tragic tale of Asian youths caught up in South East Los Angeles gang life during the mid 80’s and early 90’s. Critics have compared the film to Boyz N The Hood, high praise indeed, and the film seems to have justified that tag by picking up numerous awards including New Director/New Visions Award at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. David Huynh stars as the Baby of the title but don’t worry, identical in name alone, if this particular Baby gets put in the corner he’ll probably come out blasting. You won’t want to be calling him Frances either.
