So disappointing that the final portion is missing...
"Memurigusa Monogatari" is a story whose animation an style are reminiscent of the Out of the Inkwell shorts from the Fleischer Brothers. In the Fleischer films, Koko the Clown comes out of an ink bottle an interacts with the real world. In other words, the films are live action and only Koko (and occasionally other characters) was animated. This is the same with this Japanese short from the same era....a tiny man interacts with the real world. But the quality difference between the two films is dramatic. The Fleischer films with Koko were among the very best of the era and were brilliantly animated. However, "Kemurigusa Monogatari" features much simpler animation and the little man is essentially an articulated cutout.
The story is hard to follow, as much of the film is no longer extant. A tiny man who hates women is lecturing a woman dressed much like a geisha. He insists that women are like tobacco (huh???) and is pretty nasty. But again and again, the woman laughs at him and easily outsmarts him. Because of this, he tells her he's going to tell her the secrets of tobacco...but the film ends and we are left hanging.
The story is just okay and the same is true of the animation. Mildly interesting and historically important, you can see this film at the website for Japanese Animated Film Classics and it does fortunately have English language captions.
