A Working Vacation

Florence La Badie is content managing her orange grove when Joseph Graybill comes courting. She soon discovers she has a rival: Marguerite Snow, Graybill's crippled and world-weary wife.

This is one of 17 films shot by the Thanhouser Company on a seven-week stay in Florida. Its cast includes future star William Russell and director James Cruze. Director George Nichols makes use of the standard Thankouser technique of shooting key scenes with action taking place in the foreground, while the eye is drawn to the business taking place in the background.

It's a slight story, but very charmingly done.

An orange grove picture story, taken in Florida. The girl is boss of the grove. A stranger, coming in to see the grove, finds her at work, dressed in overalls. This meeting is followed, a few weeks later, by a love scene set up in a great tree with branches like immense arms. The boss later finds that the man is married. The man's sick wife is neglected; the disillusioned girl, the boss, is also despondent. Each is on the point of drowning herself; but the boss rescues the wife. The girls comfort each other. It is pretty well photographed in interesting backgrounds, but it is slight. A good, romantic filler. - The Moving Picture World, April 13, 1912
