Didn't seem to be very cohesive
SinjinSB3 February 2005
Last night I watched the world premiere of this movie at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. While it made me chuckle several times, it just didn't seem to be very cohesive. I tended to enjoy the bits set in the modern day versus the silly caveman scenes. Though I am a big fan of John Cleese, his scenes didn't do much for me in this movie. One my favorite bits was Dan Marino explaining proper urinal etiquette. I think that was one of problems, it was more just a collection of bits than a complete movie. Some of the scenes were tied together, but it didn't seem to flow very well. With a $17.50 ticket price for this 72 minute film, I didn't feel I got my money's worth.

I saw this movie last night and...

...this is a wretched film. I was at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and I would have booed or shouted crap at the screen but the director and stars were there. I know that they may be reading this but I do not care--I am a Dave Barry fan and I want to protect fellow fans from seeing this film (I guess you can call it a film). Please Please do not watch it for any reason. Stick with your books--this movie will ruin them. It looks like the pilot episode of a TV show with horrible acting and an awful sound design. I know the budget was small, but a talented writer/director should have received these funds and made a completely different movie.

God awful...honestly.

Adaptation of Dave Barry's best-selling book by the same name.
spaceinadaze719 June 2006
This film does a good job in adapting Dave Barry's satirical observations on the foibles of the male gender and creates a funny gem of an independent film. Although women would surely see the truth and humor in this film, men would also find it funny.

John Cleese, Dave Barry, and Dan Marino all give memorable performances in this film.

The tongue-in-cheek humor and the episodic skits are reminiscent of "Hollywood Shuffle."

Those familiar with Barry's many books will find the handling of this film true to his brand of humor.

This was a funny movie

I was sitting about two thirds of the way back, on the right side. Occasionally something happened that made the sound go weird, but I really liked this movie. It wasn't like everything else you see out there, and I give it a lot of credit for that. I liked how they brought the two couples in and out a lot, and I think they could have used them even more. The Dan Marino thing was hilarious, and I liked the bits with the repair guy. And the thing about the fictional baseball player, I always liked running gags like that.

It was fun to see a movie that didn't do things the usual way. I get tired of these cookie- cutter formula deals. I'm not saying everything worked, because not all the jokes came off the way they probably wanted them to. But the majority of the scenes were really good.

I didn't know a lot about Dave Barry but after this movie I am definitely a fan. I was grinning the whole way through it and laughing out loud more than once.

For years, they walked among us.

I read the book first. Many times, when a person reads a book or watches a movie, they do not recognize themselves as the character that is talking about; however, the part that came to calculating your oil change is right on target.

How often have you heard this "The book was better."? Well, it is.

However, do not let this detour you from watching the movie.

At first, I wondered how Dave Barry talked John Cleaves into being part of this movie; then I realized that they were kindred spirits.

Make sure your girl does not know about this movie or you may have some explaining to do.

Speaking about that, did she say something about a horse?

The humor is there, the filmmaking is not
cricketbat17 January 2020
I'm a fan of Dave Barry's writing, and this movie definitely has his style of humor in it, but this feels like a poorly made late-night infomercial for his book instead of an actual, cohesive film. Even though the jokes are good, and the acting isn't completely terrible, the amateur style of filmmaking makes it feel cheap and even cringey at times. You're probably better off reading the book instead of watching the movie.

A++++++++ Sensational. Laughed my head off!!
official053 February 2005
Loved it! Laughed my head off!! Was lucky to sneak into the world premiere at Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Was booked out. Had me in stitches. Dave Barry is so cool. Anything he touches turns to gold. John Cleese's scenes cracked me up totally. It was a fast paced comedy and there was always something to laugh at for the more intelligent person. Is not mainstream or formula or basic humor for the bozo. Every word is brilliant and a must see. Will take you by surprise. The sound at the Arlington theater did not do the film justice as it was cranked through a P.A. system with dubious sound and everyone was talking about this issue. This apparently is always the case at the Arlington. Some people were struggling to hear. I was in a decent position near a speaker and I had the time of my life. Went home with sore abs from all the laughing.

Guide to Guys
info-266528 December 2005
It was a great pleasure to sit along the shore of north Lake Tahoe and watch the only U.S. festival screening of DAVE BARRY'S GUIDE TO GUYS earlier this year at the Tahoe-Reno Film Festival. The pleasure was enhanced by the constant sound of laughter, snickers, giggles, and yes, some outright guffaws, from the opening scenes to the final credits. This is a good sign when watching a comedy, and the film did not disappoint. Written about guys for women the film captures the intricacies and foibles of being a guy and reveals them for the opposite sex. We predict G2G will become the date movie for anyone in a relationship!
