Most of my Unseen entries are about films from decades past, but this one is recent... just a few years ago. So I won’t exactly call this one “unseen” yet... just “overlooked.” Back in 2007, I was working as a researcher for Fangoria Entertainment. This meant that I spent copious amounts of time screening relatively unknown horror films for coverage. On a particular day in June, the temperature was in the upper 90s in New York City. Coincidentally, it was on this day that the air conditioning at the office died a very smoky death. It was hot. Damned hot. And while many employees decided to work from home that day, I had several friends from out of town staying at my tiny apartment. I knew that if I journeyed home, I would end up getting very little work done in lieu of playing tour guide. So I sat in...

Over the phone, while a very quiet and slightly confused engineer inspected our boiler, Den of Geek chatted to Dougray Scott – former Triffid wrangler, Imf double agent, author of Death Of A Salesman and guest star in Highlander: The TV Series – about his new film Last Passenger.
Set on a quiet, late-night commuter train out of London, the first full-length movie from short-film director Omid Nooshin sees a small group of strangers trapped on the speeding train with no help coming from outside. Think Unstoppable directed by Mike Leigh, and then try not to let your imagination run away with you next time you step on board public transport...

Primeval ends, Outcasts starts, Bedlam kicks off, Bob's Burgers arrives, Arrested Development goes back to the start, there's Mad Dogs. And lots and lots of movies...
In a busier seven days than we've seen in the last couple of weeks, the schedules wave both hello and goodbye to a number of shows. Some return to proven praise. Others have the hard task of earning it over the next six or so weeks.
Saturday, February 5th brings the end of the fourth series of Primeval at 7:30pm on ITV1. The series has seen the return of a familiar face just recently. Is there room for one more? If you're a fan of the show, tune in and have a squawk about it when the finale review goes live early Monday morning.
New sci-fi show, Outcasts, breaks onto screens in two consecutive episodes over two nights, starting Monday, February 7th at...

I know I’m at Los Angeles’ American Film Market when, as soon as I get off the plane, I run into Lloyd Kaufman (in a men’s room, no less). The Troma chief serves as the Chairman of the Independent Film and Television Alliance, which runs the Afm. Who better to chair an organization and market dedicated to discovering and promoting movies created outside the studio system than Kaufman?
This November, the Afm unveils over 500 films in dozens of languages for prospective international buyers. They screen the majority of these new motion pictures at seven different screening venues in sunny Santa Monica. The Afm is the proud home for the smaller guys, foreign and art-house features and B- to Z-grade movies. Just about everything stars Michael Madsen, C. Thomas Howell and/or Billy Zane. Best of all, the number of genre films has increased substantially over the 11 years I’ve been coming here,...

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- Top New Zealand casting director Di Rowan has abruptly closed her business after more than 20 years of casting such films as The Piano, Whale Rider, In My Father's Den and Perfect Creature. "An unpaid debt makes it financially very difficult to continue," Di Rowan said in an interview. "One very bad experience has made it very difficult to run my business the way I have been and to continue doing what I love doing. I don't think it will have any effect on the industry as a whole, I certainly hope not." Rowan discoveries like Anna Paquin, who won an Oscar for The Piano, and Keisha Castle-Hughes, who was Oscar-nominated for Whale Rider, have been pivotal to the New Zealand film industry's unprecedented profile in recent years.

20th Century Fox is set to acquire Glenn Standring's edgy vampire film Perfect Creature, sources close to the deal confirmed Thursday. The deal is not only the largest sale ever made of a New Zealand film but also marks the first time a U.S. studio has acquired a picture from the compact market. With the country on a roll from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the worldwide success of Niki Caro's Whale Rider and Jackson's highly anticipated adaptation of King Kong due at Christmas, Perfect Creature looks to be the country's next highly commercial international release.
