I respect the attempt by the makers of this short film to make an interesting and very low budget WWI film. The basic story idea, told without words, is very interesting and poignant. A man goes off in his fighter plane and his girlfriend watches as he leaves and waits for his return. However, the style of the film goes from very clever to exceptionally poor--back and forth. For the actors, they took actual live footage and digitized it--giving it a cell shaded look. This was very effective and exciting to see. And these actors were placed in computer generated settings--such as in the cockpit of the plan or in a bell tower--an interesting touch. However, in distant shots, the graphic quality of the film suffered greatly. While the close shots are all decent quality for 2003, the distant shots look a lot like graphics created on an old 486 computer and most PS1 games look as good or better. If the movie were re-shot for the distant shots, then it would have been much more effective. As it is, the battle scenes and climax look like they were lifted from a 1992-era game, such as Red Baron. Truly an odd and confusing movie made on a shoestring budget--though it is still quite watchable and sweet.
