An Oscar movie could hit theaters at any time during the year -- as far as the rules are concerned, it only needs to be released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 to be eligible -- but everyone knows that all of the true contenders arrive in the last quarter of the year.
I suppose some Academy-worthy movies have already been released: Dunkirk, right? The Big Sick and Get Out less likely, but perhaps! I guess some people believe Wonder Woman could really get a Best Picture nomination.... So, instead of considering this our first round of Oscar predictions, think of it as a Ones to Watch list to prepare you as studios start showing off their films that could earn noms at next year's Academy Awards. (Which are still five months away, Fyi, on March 4, 2018.)

“Dunkirk” aside, deep summer looks like a fallow season for major films — but appearances are deceiving. This is perhaps their most-essential moment on the movie calendar, as it’s when distributors huddle, haggle, and negotiate to determine which movies will head for the almighty awards-season launch festivals of Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and New York.
From the festivals’ perspectives, they’re vying for the starriest red-carpet gala world premieres. (The exception is Telluride, which doesn’t have to vie; it gets to cherry pick its impeccably curated four-day Labor Day Weekend selection in secret.) Ahead of next week’s rollout of announcements, we called around for intel on what we can expect to see.

Of course, some films either won’t be ready to screen until year’s end, or will skip festivals and go straight to audiences.

Update: Variety has confirmed that Nolan’s next film will indeed be Dunkirk, with Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Tom Hardy in talks to join, although most of the leading cast will consist of unknowns. See the original story below for the film set to shoot in IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film.
With his days of Batman behind him, Christopher Nolan is perhaps at the most interesting point of his career. As Hollywood’s top actors clamor to work with him and his ability to have mostly a free reign on budget, we’re intrigued at where he’ll head next. Following up Interstellar, which had quite divisive reactions, Warner Bros. already set a release date of July 21st, 2017 for his next feature, and today we have the first potential details.

Mark Gatiss has signed up to play Labour politician Peter Mandelson in new Channel 4 political drama Coalition.
The Sherlock and League of Gentlemen actor will be joined by Babylon's Bertie Carvel as Nick Clegg, The Bletchley Circle's Mark Dexter as David Cameron and Ian Grieve (The Confessions of Gordon Brown) as Gordon Brown.
Coalition follows the moments which led to Clegg rising from outsider in the 2010 general election to the man who would decide the political fate of the country.
As a politician who was living in the shadow of Cameron and Brown, Clegg found himself in the powerful position of having to choose whether to ally his party with Labour or the Conservatives following the public's election votes.
Coalition is written by James Graham, who previously worked on Privacy, This House and Tory Boyz.
BAFTA-winning director Alex Holmes, who helmed Dunkirk and House of Saddam, will direct the 90-minute single drama.
