Can I have my hour back please?
shonwynlewis27 October 2006
Now this is a weird film! I've never before seen a made-for-TV movie give me two distinctly different experiences. For starters, the good...

The special effects are, as stated above, not just decent, they're pretty damn good! Especially the underwater sub sequences which are quite believable, and the spectral look of the main sub was nothing short of excellent. Which leads me to think the production values couldn't have been that bad if they'd spent so much on getting the effects just right.

The story as well was full of potential, which kept me tuned in for just about an hour to see how it would pan out. The premise kept me intrigued as it reminded me of a few similar movies, mostly Event Horizon.

...Oh God how I wished I WAS watching Event Horizon by the 55th minute! Whilst that is dark and brooding, this is light and fluffy - yes even the apparently gory scenes! The bit in the medilab was hilarious, after the apparently gruesome death the ex-cop came in and immediately said "no clear spot in the blood splatter, he was alone!" - Christ why isn't she on CSI? They'd solve their cases in a 30 minute slot instead! The opening sequence introducing Grieco was, almost without doubt, the biggest load of God-awful crap I've ever witnessed. For a moody, troubled, hard-as-nails, all-action hero he didn't half resemble a good solid piece of timber (make-up, mannerisms and dialogue!). The bad guy wasn't much better "put ze vomen in front of ze door" he says meanacingly in a dubbed fashion in front of the wobbly red immovable 10" thick steel door, 'oh God NO!' we scream, until we realise they go there fairly eagerly...and there's only three of them - actually there's only five hostages in total!! But glory of glories the special forces arrive, standing 3-4 feet behind the cardboardy-steel red tubes for cover, shooting from the hip with their magic bullets, you know, the ones that hit the bad guys in the shoulder and they die instantly! But I persevered and the following bit with the debriefing wasn't half-bad acted, and introduced the intriguing storyline quite well.

However, the character introductions were all over the place, they recruit the geek in the style of the movie S.W.A.T., then you expect to see the remainder of the crew introduced in the same fashion (a bit formulaic but whatever works!), which I'm sure was the scriptwriter's intension until he realised he'd spent too much time setting up the geek the blonde and Grieco. Hence the cringeworthy boardroom scene where the boss points at the 3 other new faces and basically says "oh yeah, you're also taking him, him and her with you!"...ridiculous considering the other 'her' was a fairly integral character due to her past experiences with 'bad mojo'.

After about an hour I noticed that the story wasn't exactly moving that much, they'd been on the sub for about 20 minutes and were in the process of fighting back a medieval horde with their hi-tec (or hi-tat!)plastic, made in Taiwan guns, but hadn't made any actual progress whatsoever, except emotionally between the two girls! There was no feeling of urgency at all, and there was a distinct feeling of 'cleanliness' and a severe lack of bodies around considering that the entire crew of 38 had apparently been massacred.

I've just lost an hour of my life to this film due to it's promising nature, which is what's so disappointing - it's OK if a movie's basically crap, you can just switch off, but this one promised to get going so many times but ultimately let me down through poor direction choices, wooden acting by the leads, and a terrible, terrible dialogue! In conclusion, don't watch this on a Saturday night, you'll cry as you'd have missed a night out on the town for it! Try a Monday or Tuesday night so you won't feel so bad about it! Promising movie, fairly good storyline, excellent special effects let down by a dodgy cast, direction and script. It may not have been the most expensive thing ever made, but judging by the high standard of the special effects, they had enough money available to have produced a much better quality product than what eventually materialised...by all means watch it, but it's your funeral!

It's alright, if you are a Richard Grieco fan.

I saw this movie on the sci-fi channel before writing this comment. I liked it, but I guess it was only because I am a Richard Grieco fan. I have to admit, there are a few gruesome scenes, so I would not suggest letting your 5 year-old watch it. The plot was hard to follow as well. In other words, my 5 stars are for Richard Grieco. This movie reminded me a bit of Ghost Busters, but a more gruesome and dramatic version. I bet that most people who saw it thought the same thing. It's worth taking some time to sit down and watch if you are a big fan of ghost stories. In conclusion, if you think that you are getting ready to watch a super-great movie, you will be disappointed.

A big disappointment
wnterstar1 April 2004
I love good horror movies, especially ghost stories. From the previews, it looked like it was going to be a good story with some decent special effects.

Wrong!

The acting was ok...but they couldn't do much with the push-button script. The few special effects they had were good, but there could have been much more of them.

The plot was, for the most part, predictable. Although, I can usually predict who lives and who dies, but I must admit they surprised me on that one.

All in all, I was very disappointed.

It looked like it was the pilot to a sci-fi series, which wouldn't be bad...it is a great premise.

GhostBusters but without the laughs
TheLittleSongbird6 June 2012
Try as I might, as much as I do dislike a lot of the SciFi/SyFy Channel original movies, I did actually want to like Phantom Force. Although the idea was somewhat derivative it did interest me in seeing it. But I just didn't like Phantom Force at all. It seemed as though it was striving to be a more gruesome and dramatic version of GhostBusters(though I acknowledge it may not have been), minus the sense of fun and great effects that film had. The set looks as though it was left over from something like Deep Shock and the whole film even for a film of the genre looks too drab with editing that is lacking in any kind of fluidity. The effects have been far worse since this film, but they are just alright here. But the visuals aren't the worst part. The worst asset despite the potential, was the story, dull in the pace and sometimes convoluted such as if the crew were eco-kinetic why couldn't they see the demons being I imagine in the same dimension as them? It also tries to make something out of the oft-done submarine scenario, but does it with no element of suspense, and the climax is underwhelming to say the least. Aside from the story, the script is terrible, cheesy and lifeless a lot of the time(the whole sitting down and chatting scenes are poorly written and slow the film down) and sometimes even incoherent with the overbearing sound effects and the actors mumbling the way through their lines. The characters, especially the crazy scientist character, are clichéd and despite efforts through flashbacks to give the characters some depth you just don't care for them. The actors also don't seem to do anything with their roles, Richard Grieco especially plods and mumbles his way through the lead role. Overall, had some potential but wasted it by how non-involving the whole film is. 1/10 Bethany Cox

Watchable, if you're really bored

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is about some ancient rock that has the power to summon forth demons to take over the world. A submarine finds it and next thing you know, the sub is shooting torpedoes at anything that comes near it. Phantom Force is called in to bring order to the chaos.

The biggest problem with this movie is that Richard Grieco really needs to start going to a barber instead of a Hollywood stylist, and quit wearing so much makeup. He looks downright silly as the lead action hero. The movie also suffers from an unnecessary load of technobabble. This is supposed to be a serious horror movie, and they're talking about "ectoplasm". I mean, that's from Ghost Busters for pete's sake.

Once aboard the haunted sub, the mandatory nerd character pulls out some laser gizmo and transports them all to the alternate dimension which the ghosts live on. I'm sorry, but I don't think you can do that with a laser, no matter how much nonsense you spew beforehand. Then we get what is probably the best part of the movie, where the characters wander around the sub for a while. It at least has a bit of atmosphere. Oh, okay, the only reason I was still watching at this point is because there's this awesomely hot blond in a skin-tight tank top. Unfortunately, whenever her character is together with the other female character, it turns into the Oprah Winfrey show: They sit down for a nice little chat about personal things (complete with flashbacks). Talk about stopping the story dead in its tracks. I don't know what is it with these people and character development. There's a ten minute scene at the beginning of the movie to introduce Grieco's character, and then all this chatty stuff with the girls, and yet these characters are still completely one-dimensional.

Anyhow, eventually they find this rock and barbarians attack (The barbarians come from the rock, and they can take over the world!!!) The barbarians are easily defeated by the Ghost Busters guns and freezing grenades that Phantom Force uses against them. At this point, I was kind of wondering if this magical rock was really such a practical weapon of world domination. I mean, it can't even injure a single person on board a submarine. I don't think it would stand much of a chance against the US Marine Corps. Oh well.

Anyhow, I missed the part where they get off the submarine, but then they're in Russia where some bad guys have gotten hold of the stone, there's a big shootout with the requisite explosions. The End.

Overall, it was watchable, but that's about the highest compliment I'll give it.

Another rubbishy sci-fi channel film.
poolandrews25 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Phantom Force starts a few hundred years ago on the open Aegean Seas as a ship's crew become possessed by something from another dimension... Jump to the present & about 30 miles outside Moscow where local TV news crews report that armed terrorists have seized a chemical plant & are holding up to 30 people hostage, some sort of special army unit lead by agent Mark Dupree (Richard Grieco) are sent in to 'solve' the problem. Shortly after Dupree is summoned to see his boss Jack Bavaro (Nigel Bennett) who enlists him to lead a team that will be known as the 'Phantom Force' who will target the categorically indefinable but which still poses a threat, still with me? Good because this thing gets even better, actually I just lied about it getting better as I wanted to try & build it up a bit & make it sound just a little bit interesting. Sorry. Anyway, Jack informs Dupree about his inaugural first mission, a Russian submarine named 'Venture' has been firing torpedo's off & destroying anything that goes near it & since it's located in the Aegean Sea Jack believes the subs crew discovered the Hades Stone which, in the wrong hands, can be used to open an inter dimensional portal & call an endless army of demon warriors to invade the Earth! Scary eh? Dupree, along with the rest of his hand picked team members, Ivan Cutler (Jim Fyfe) the computer whizz, Potts (Tangi Miller) the detective, Rebecca Weaver (Jenna Guring) a parapsychologist, Joe Murray (Tyrone Pinkham) the weapons guy & Kyle Hudson (Atanas Srebrev) who happens to be an expert in diving, sets off for the sub to try to prevent the Hades Stone from falling into the wrong hands...

Directed by Christian McIntire Phantom Force is a load of crap & you can definitely understand why he tried to have his name removed from the film, unfortunately for him he was unsuccessful so everyone knows who to blame for making this. The script by Sam Wells is pure baloney of the highest order featuring nuclear submarines, ghosts, a evil stone that looks like it's a garden ornament (one of those stone mushroom decorations) & runs on gas (!), laser guns, alternate dimensions, a shadowy organisation, an evil Macedonian Commander (Hristo Shopov) & a bunch of terrorists. Everything gets lost, it has no real focus, the plotting & basic story are ridiculous, it make little sense overall if you think about it (which writer Mr. Wells obviously didn't) & for some bizarre reason it takes itself extremely seriously which was a bad idea as most of it comes across as laughable anyway. The thing is slow, boring & is deeply uninteresting, it has terrible character's whom have no background at all apart from Potts whom gets a lot of background even going as far as having not one but two flashbacks all to herself which I simply don't understand because no-one else gets anything at all, what did she do exactly? Sleep with the writer? Lets not go there shall we. The climax is very weak & lets just hope the Phantom Force is disbanded! Phantom Force has nothing by which I can recommend it by, basically it's terrible.

Director McIntire does a reasonable job but as a whole Phantom Force is both bland & forgettable (& the sooner I forget it the better). Surprisingly some of the CGI effects are actually quite good, while the rest are just crap. There is no excitement or tension or scares or anything really. The only gore is when a guy is cut up with a medical saw, mostly off screen unfortunately although there is a severed arm involved & a quick decapitation.

I was amazing to see that Phantom Force had a budget of about $1,400,000 as that sounds like a pretty decent pile of cash, where did the money go exactly? The acting is poor from everyone.

Phantom Force is crap, plain & simple. It's muddled, confused stupid nonsense that I can't see many people enjoying, I certainly didn't. One to avoid.

Quite a nice little one-off
AJCrowley25 January 2006
OK, it was a quite night on the satellite, so with my lack of attention span, i surfed past the Sci-fi channel.

The start was rocky, it had obvious made-for-TV movie production values, and the acting and combat was sub x-files to say the least, however, the actual concept wasn't bad, and there were some technical accuracy you don't get in most action films.

Grieco really needs to be told to speak clearly, i mean, the Guttural Whisper thing is a tad tacky and gets boring after hearing him mumble his way through a sentence, and this film won't be winning him any Oscars, but overall, he fit into the big hero-shaped hole in the film.

It felt very much like someone had been playing Doom recently, the plot stank of the current occult-terror video games out these days, but as a whole, the Plot hung together, but there was a hell of a lot the directors didn't take advantage of and could have done so much more with. effects ranged from the bland to the quite nice, but the inconsistency didn't help matters.

Worth a watch, just for a one-off, shame it wasn't made into a series, after a false start it could have been polished up a bit.

I suspect the original working title was probably "Interceptor Force III."
Carycomic27 March 2004
Warning: Spoilers
But, someone at Unified Film Organization (UFO) must have changed their mind after learning that Olivier Gruner was unavailable. So, they changed the name to "Phantom Force." I have to admit: it's a lot catchier than "The Ghostbusters Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea!" Here are the mandatory spoilers.

The opening prologue is reminiscent of Tia Carrere's "Relic Hunter" series, with what looks like a 16th-century sailing vessel being tossed about in a storm. The greedy sea captain thinks he can command the cursed relic as easily as his crew; learns the hard way that's just bullcrap; and, his ship goes down with all hands.

Enter Richard Grieco, a slightly psychic anti-terrorist. He and his crew rescue a bunch of technicians at a chemical plant, in post-Cold War Russia. It turns out, however, that the gas the terrorist group was after had already been hijacked elsewhere; the siege at the plant was just an elaborate diversion! So, Grieco's boss (played by Nigel Bennet, of "Forever Knight" and "Psi Factor" fame) orders him to make amends by going after a nuclear sub that's literally become a ghost ship!

This is due to the cursed relic having been found and salvaged by the sub's crew. Grieco and five others board the sub using mini-subs modified to be just as ghostly. And, what follows, during the remaining ninety minutes, is predictable. Yet, still somewhat entertaining...if you're stuck at home, on a boring Saturday night. All in all, I give this 2.3 stars.

Well executed, though formulaic:
ich_yama26 November 2005
This was, as stated previously both predictable and an excellent pilot for a TV series. Alas, no TV series will follow.

Why, then did I give it seven points? It is an excellent execution of a simple plot. Moreover, the Big-Evil-Thingy-In-Question (to avoid a spoiler), has a potentially Lovecraftian, distant, unknowable sort of horror to it.

Of course, the script-writer completely failed to exploit it and makes it tangible long before its potential horror has expired.

If you like single-concept science fiction, punctuated by insufficiently bloody violence (aka B-movies), you will enjoy this as much as I did.

Ich_Yama's SciFi-meter:

(BBB: 2 primary characters)

(BEM: Spectral and Humanoid)

(World: Present/near-future)
